Romeo Philip from Battlefoam and the Infinity O-12 podcast joins us once again in the third chair. This time it's a Mega-sode!

Why is it so long? We dive into the miniature game Infinity! After spending over an hour covering the rich background of the game and each faction indetail, we then dive into the mechanics. What makes this game different? And is it really "Always your turn?"

All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- News
- & More

Woot! New episode! I really don't need another game to play, but I find it interesting how Infinity has been around for a long time but is only now starting to gain a lot of traction. I hope you address this on the show, but I'm only on achievements so far, so we shall see.

Gathering the Informations.

Infinity has gotten quite a bit of traction over the years, I think it is just becoming more visible now with the recent release of a new book.

Craig gets every available thumb up for "Yes, you CAN rush the creative process". Working as I do in a museum with scheduled openings for exhibitions (which always involves tons of artsy types in the form of architects, designers and artists) the point gets hammered in every time we work on a project. If kickstarter projects are extremely slow and/or fail to show up, it is a big problem and you probably should not have started the project at all, or capped it at a realistic level instead of watching in foolish glee as the support rolls in above your competence level.

In other news, good to hear you guys finally got to try Infinity out. I remember being a bit puzzled by your understanding of the game in the (now a couple of years old?) episode when you commented on it last. Romeo is great at showing enthusiasm about the game and I hope your review brings more people to it. Still, he must overcome his aversion to reading the books, because the version of the Infinity universe you presented in the show definitely was some sort of alternate history version

Hey guys! Loved the show.

As an American living in china, its great to hear the show and stay plugged into gaming at home, even if i don't get to play games very often anymore.

As a speaker of Chinese I think I can help with Yu Jing. You absolutely should pronounce it how it looks.

The confusion is probably from an old romanization system called Wade–Giles which has been out of favor for decades. One of the (many) reasons its not popular is because you have to be a linguist to use it and you can't look at a word written Ching and know that it sounds like Jing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wade%E2%80%93Giles ...for some reason they rendered all j and zh sounds as ch. they also rendered z sounds as ts.... <boggle> its a mystery.

京Capitial (Jing) is the same character in as in Beijing 北京 (Northern Capital). And we all say "Bay-jing" not "bay-ching," right?

If you have any doubts you can go to Google Translate yourself and check. Type in Jade Capital and you will get 玉京城 (yu jing cheng) (The cheng just means city). Make sure to hit the "read phonetically" button!

Love the show and I'm wishing I lived in the States so I could pick up Infinity! It looks like its my kind of game....

Thanks all

So...I'm sitting at my desk and actually contemplating banging my head against it.

You're killing me, Russ. The Joe Abercrombie books. After the First Law trilogy...you should read the stand-alone books in the following order:

FIRST - Best Served Cold
SECOND - Heroes
THIRD - Red Country

It may be too late for you Russ...perhaps I can save Craig.

(sigh) - now my interest is piqued about Infinity.
I am a little torn on dumping $50 on fluff then going to a wiki for rules, if the book is as bad as you all seem to agree it is.
Great insights during the review though.
And Romeo is always entertaining.

Just started listening to this episode today, and only up to the General Geekery portion of the show but...

...didn't appreciate Romeo trashing my beloved AT-43. Unnecessary. Yeah, I'm being sensitive, but still...

...I'm almost afraid to listen to the rest of the show. Infinity is incredibly tempting. It's only my total dislike of metal keeping me out of the game. But, man, if they ever switched to plastics, or even resin I'd be all over it.

Oh, and lastly? Merry Christmas D6G! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!!

Thanks for the comments everyone, and I hope you all had a great Christmas!

To reply in reverse order:

Jeff:
- Sorry, but I agree with Romeo...AT-43 was pretty weak sauce. There, I said it.
- Working with metal does feel retro, although they do a good job.

Vinsal:
- The book is worth the $$, but just know what you're getting.

HokieStone:
- Yeah, think I got it all figured out before I got too far in Red Country. I'm now listening to Best Served Cold.

Pontifex:
- Thank you very much for the pronunciation help!

bbb:
- Romeo hinted at the reason for the semi recent rebirth of Infinity: Beasts of War. They did a huge spread on the game not too long ago, and created all the teaching videos. I think this was a big help.

Happy New Year!

Ugh! Best Served Cold actually turned me off to reading any fantasy book for awhile. I just did not enjoy it... but it looks like you guys liked it / are liking it?

I'm just about to give a new fantasy book another try after easing back in with The Hobbit. Trying the first of the "Dwarves" series books now...

I will have to point a few friends towards this podcast as Infinity is gaining traction here, too!

Good episode, although I also disagree with trashing AT-43, it had some interesting mechanics and neat figures. I just with they had gotten more product out the door faster. Everyone I know stopped playing it mostly due to the lack of availability and incredibly slow release schedule, not bad rules. Confrontation on the other hand, oh boy that was a bad way to take that game.

I'm curious what kickstarter Craig is talking about though? I understand not naming it in the podcast proper, but I'm wondering if it's one of the ones pledged to and haven't been closely following :(

If anyone else had their interest piqued from the podcast, Warstore has a sale until 1/2/13.

It'll get you a few bucks off if you get the Infinity Rulebook and a starter or two. Or anything else for that matter.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys, and what Russ aid, vis-a-vis all of the preceding comments.

Just between us sheep, the kickstarter is Tectonic Craft Studios. I've me the guy, he's really nice, and his stuff is really neat. But honestly, if you really believe "you can't rush creativity" then you better either have a trust fund, or not be serious about translating your hobby into a job . . . The local gaming scene, chaotic enough as it is, has changed so often, the "Full Table of Terrain" I pledged for has changed at least 5 times in my head . . .

Infinity is one of those games that's very simple in its basics, and very complex in its particulars. Russ, who did up the bullets for the review, did a GREAT job, I thought, of going over the basics in detail and giving just enough of a glimpse into the specifics to show the depth and scope of the game.

Anyway, hope you all had great Christmases, Hanukkahs, Saturnalias, etc. And may 2013 be healthy and prosperous for you all!

~Craig

Far-stretching, endless Time
Brings forth all hidden things,
And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

You know...when I started listening to the episode, I had just gotten to the point where you said you thought the first book was "Heroes"...that's why I posted in here. After a bit of a break, I just started listening again, and a few minutes later...in the episode...you corrected to "Best Served Cold". Well, that will teach me to listen to the whole episode before I jump on my high horse and come charging in here to correct you...

First Happy New Year to all of you.

My problem with the "Can't rush creativity" is if you are in the Kickstarter phase of a project like that, in my mind you should already have the creative details worked and be doing the fine tuning at that point, or at least the part that involves money to get accomplished. If you are still "creating things" you probably should have held off a little longer before making promises you aren't going to try to keep.

I get yelled at if I don't take off on time-why should you be any different.
