So, I am a hesitant new player, and I am thinking on my first army, and I have decided to choose Space Wolves. I have limited funds at the moment, and I am curious about what units are essential to building a solid army so I don't waste funds on non essential units.

1. Get the codex and rulebook

2. Then get a HQ and troop choices
- I don't know about SW but for SM, a captain and tac squads are a good start

Seconded. Grey hunters are often lauded as some of the best troop options in the game, and it sounds like Rune Priests can put out some serious hurt with their psychic powers. Unfortunately, I don't know tons about SW, so I can't really give tons of advice, other than that Long Fangs are pretty awesome.

I don't play Space Wolves but I hear great things about the Rune Priests, Gray Hunters, and Long Fangs. Seems like a good place to start until you can figure out a list you like.

For space wolves, to start with you need the rulebook, the codex, and at least 2 troop choices and a HQ. For your HQ, I would suggest a Rune Priest, as they are particularly powerful. Grey Hunters are also your ideal troop choice, as they are able to effectively both dish out and absorb a fair amount of pain. Expanding beyond that, I would recommend investing in a squad of Long Fangs (Devestators). Long Fang squads are able to take a mass of missile launchers for an extremely low point value, and can split their fire. I haven't seen them in action yet, but I've also heard good things about Thunderwolf Cavalry.

Additionally, if you want to save on expense, look at online retailers other than GW for purchasing your product. eBay works for some things, like getting the softcover rulebook from Dark Vengeance, but for others you might be better off looking at places like Discount Games store. To get you started, here are a couple of links

Just starting with space wolfs myself so know how you feel,

The battle force is a good place to start - you get 20 Grey hunters, 5 scouts and a drop pod, which is more than enough to start playing with a 500 point army

It is also very easy to convert on of the grey hunter models to a rune priest and have a legal force, this will give you a very good core to build from, long fangs are good as are wolf guard ( attached to a grey hunter squad - give a bit of extra punch to the squad)

I'd suggest starting with the battle force and codex, playing a few games once you have the models in the battle force built up and then adding what you feel like you felt was missing

Just as a reference point, this is what i plan to do myself -

The 500 point list can be made completely out of the battle force and is something i think will play reasonable well, ( With the exception of the Melta gun, the space wolf battle force does not included one but you should be able to buy / trade one quite easily)

Hope that helps

Aaron

P.s. As other have said, a lot of online retailer sell stuff at 20-30% of retail as standard, if your on a limited budget i'd have a look at these retails ( not in the US so dont know who is best to look at out thier)

Rulebook, codex and SW battle force. Look through the codex to decide which hq you want.

Add to the collection as desired.
