I'll be getting the game for christmas. Only other MMO I ever played was SW:TOR but I've heard good things about it. Plus an actual fantasy MMO might be pretty good. Just wondered if there are any tips I should know about when making my character and such? Or is it pretty straightforward? I just don't want to muck up my first character. Incidently can I only have a max of one character on my account at a time?

I've already decided I'm going to make a Norn fighter or guardian first. I assume one is offensive the other defencive?

I'm not the most experienced player, but the best advice I can offer is...

Everyday strive to do your daily achievments. Kill 15 enemy types, do 5 daily quests, etc. etc. You get free goodies when you finish it off.
When you see a random zone even pop up, do it. Great sources of XP
From what I understand, you main quest isn't that important in the game. Before too long it ends and you just start going to different zones to do the quest chains and the like.
As with most MMO's, it's a good idea to get with a group
Don't worry too much about finding epic loot in the beginning. Besides, the rare stuff is special mostly because the way it looks, not so much the stats.

Also, don't let anyone's endless whining about how "[class] is [under/over]powered" get in the way of you picking a class or weapon.

People whine. It's just the nature of people. All of the classes are fun and viable; many of the problems that DID exist have been mostly ironed out, and as a result, each class is quite enjoyable in its own way.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Don't worry about that too much as skill points (for acquiring skills) are plentiful on the map and you'll get 1 for leveling up as well. Reseting your traits isn't that expensive either so if you find yourself dissatisfied its not hard to start over. You start the game being able to have 5 characters I believe. You can buy extra character slots.

The game's learning curve is pretty smooth, baring some of the story missions which can be quite difficult (last I played haven't done anything in like a month). Don't be discouraged if you die often. It will happen to you as dodging is really big in GW2 and it can take awhile to get the hang of it.

Whcih is also why you probably want to grab the dodge related ability eventually. For example, nevromancers have one that has them plant a mark of blood where they land, and warriors have one that does straight up damage.

It's not huge, but when you're dodging a lot anyway, every bit helps.
