Storm Trooper with Maglight
|
I'd been mulling over the idea for a while and finally decided to go ahead with a themed Imperial Guard army; a regiment from a world that for a period of time remained isolated due to warp storms and fell into bloody civil war. I'm going to be using Stormvermin and Grave Guard bodies with greenstuffing, marauder heads, maraunder horsemen heads and empire flagellent heads to give them a barbaric, feral look as would reflect those who would populate a world in ruins with little industry and being long deprived of imperial culture and technology. I'll be posting a blog of my army in the new year as I start to put it together.
Anywho, here's the list, it's not necessarily take all comers as keeping with the theme I've focused them upon fighting non-meq's, mostly imperial guard and orks. General tactics include using camo cloaks/ forward sentries and go to ground to get 2+ saves and get back up, charge with flamers and get stuck in assault to tie up units while the meltas and russ do what they say on the tin. Throw in Marbo and some scouting sentinels for some added disruption.
Criticism and advice would be greatly appreciated! Any conversion suggestions too would be great.
CCS
-4 flamers
-camo cloaks
-2 bodyguards
-melta bomb
Marbo
Veteran squad
-demolitions
-3 melta guns
-vox caster
-> CHIMERA with hull flamer and multilaser
Veteran squad
-forward sentries
-3 flamers
-vox caster
Leman Russ Battle Tank
-heavy bolter sponsons
-hull heavy flamer
2 Scout sentinels
-autocannons

Pretty neat list at 750. Curious to see what the minitures look like.

Vox casters are not needed, as few orders make or break games. The squad in the chimera cant receive orders while embarked, and without a vox on the CCS they don't even work.
Instead of melta bombs on the commander, why not get krak grenades on the whole squad for the same points?
Now that ordnance weapons make the other guns snap fire, the bolter sponsons are near worthless.
Sounds like a cool looking army!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? I hadnt a clue vox casters didnt work if the CCS doesnt have one? I figured that since a large proportion of my tactics require orders since I'll be lying on the floor so much it'd be fairly crucial? Or would it really not be worth the expenditure?
I've already got the Russ put together and painted; how would you recommend removing the sponsons? They're pretty strongly glued...
Is there anything in particular you'd say I'm missing?

Yep. Both squads need Voxes for it to work. Sucks, I know.
Eh, for the Sponsons as long as you just tell me they don't work (say they are like, destroyed or something) I would be OK with it. Did you use superglue or plastic glue?

I'll tweak the list and post the new version tomorrow. What would be the suggestions? I'm just reluctant to take vox on a CCS as that means giving up special weapons... Without the sponsons or vox casters I'll have 30 points to spend. I was thinking possibly adding krak grenades and carapace to the CCS?
I would take another veteran squad although I want to keep the monetary cost of the army down as low as possible; I'll be going to uni in September and thus broke as a joke. I'm not too keen on the idea of adding anymore chimeras as it wouldn't be so inkeeping with the theme, I want them to be abit like urban wildlings from game of thrones! Not just standard mechvets.
I know IG aren't that great for CC but how would optimising one squad for cc work/ would it be worth it? I've got an inclination to use the new Forgeworld chainaxes for something over the top.
I'm not sure, I didn't glue it, I bought it second hand off a friend who used to play 5/6 years ago and I doubt they'd remember. I heard something about putting models in a freezer to make the glue more brittle if you wanted to disassemble them?
Thanks!

Hmmm... Won't the LRBT be unable to fire its hull heavy flamer if it fires its main (Ordance) cannon under the 6E rules?

Yes, but if it actually gets to the range where it gets to use it could be more reliable, giving guaranteed hits instead of a probable miss with the Battlecannon. Of course, if you're up against Marines or anything similar, you'll go for the cannon anyway though.

Honestly, your CCS is going to get riddled...I would suggest dropping the sentinels and getting a chimera for the CCS. Also, I myself would switch the vets to snipers or nade launchers since they are on foot...So that they do not have to trek across the field

Then I guess I should drop the plasmas and flamers and all use snipers as I'd rather not use any more transports since it wouldn't be as inkeeping with the theme. Thing is cus of the limitations of the heads and bodies I'll be using, I cant make too many squads hence why this is supposed to be small.
Most importantly I need another unit, preferably a tank to head up with the melta vets and Leman Russ to take out big stuff while the snipers were used to lay down and hide with 2+ cover saves.

I think for a low points limit you are stocking too many upgrades onto your CCS. Also with your revised list I think your in an awkward position where you are between being a mech or a foot army. It would probably be better to drop the sentinels and take more chimeras, but you've already said thats not preferable. In keeping with you theme its probably better to remove the other unit of vets from the chimera. If you drop the demolitions, chimera, CCS carapace armour and the sentinels you should be able to get another group of vets and a 5man melta storm trooper squad. So the deep striking storm troopers would have to replace the role of the melta vets in the chimera. I think this would keep more in your theme of having the forward observer type list where the can be more assault oriented as opposed to having 1 unit being holed up in a chimera and another looking lonesome.

sorry to drop a spanner in the works, but if you are going for an isolated world and its not hugely technologically advanced, why not throw in a unit of witches, sorry, I mean psycher battle squad? You are already doing a ton of cool conversions and it would give you a ton of bang or seriously modify the leadership of a unit you are about to snipe.......
Just a thought.

rahxephon; the problem is due to the limitations of the parts I'll be using, this is a modelling as well as gaming project.
ghpoobah that's a brilliant idea! I'll keep that in mind actually...
I want to use the ccs and vets to sit on objectives in cover and hold them; the choice really then is between flamers and snipers if I'm keeping the cost down. What I really need is to work out what to use to actually 'get stuck in'; assaulty/ frontline units.
I'm though about changing the CCS to 2 lascannons with camo clokes instead and keeping it as cheap fire support.
How do rough riders fare in 6th ed?

-I decided not to use the battle psykers yet but they will come up as a side project for sure when I finish 750pts and want to reach 1000 or as a variation.
CCS
2 lascannons
camo cloaks
Marbo
Veteran squad
demolitions
3 melta guns
-> chimera
Veteran squad
forward sentries
3 snipers
missile launcher
Leman Russ Battle Tank with hull heavy flamer
x2 Forgeworld heavy mortars
Does anyone have experience with heavy mortars? They'd be very fitting aesthetically.
There are 20 points left spare.
I've also written 250 points of Grey Knight allies for them, as I already have some terminators; I'll just paint them all rusty and worn as to at least patch the guard visibly.
