Ok, missed the bus on this game, but I recently bought it and beat it, and I must say this is an excellent game. It's a derivative of GTA4 to be sure, but in many ways it blows that game out of the water. It's demented, psychotic and perverted, and insanely fun where gta is serious and lackluster.
It also completely and utterly surpasses gta in character customization, you can easily go into comic book territory, with ridiculous characters, male or female, fully voice acted, displaying every detail, nuance and costume option throughout the storyline where gta forces you to be a specific character. I appreciated that.
I will say gta4 had better vehicle physics, damage, world representation and detail. But saints row had much more charm....albeit in a sadistic way. This game is warped. Like, serious F'd.
It is more of a RPG/FPS hybrid, IMO. What I wanted from gta4, but they failed to deliver.
All in all, I enjoyed this game immensely! Ridiculous amounts of non-politically correct gaming. Very sad THQ has gone bankrupt, as they made some damn good games that I played a lot, all the dawn of war games too.

Ya it's a nice game, Though talk about it in front of anyone who played SR2 and you will be the target for a searing pain that you never knew could exist.

Not really looking for that. I haven't played sr2. I can't imagine there's people that are that angry. No?

Stop by the saint row forums and take a look. It's kind of crazy how things moved from 2 to 3 and how much people are angry about it. (Actually its a little worse then people being angry a lot just stopped caring, too disappointed to even be angry.) I kind of take an more tempered view of things in that I see 3 as kind of lateral move in the series rather then a flaming bag of something that a lot of the old fans do.
The big that that bugged me about 3 was how limited the character customization was, they also just cut cut cut... cut cut. There is something like 1 third the missions in 3.
3 Is still a nice game though, play it and have fun, then maybe try 2 because I think it's better in oh so many ways.

I'll restrain myself from such an action, or at least make a valiant attempt
SR3 is an ok enough game. It's GTA without being serious. At all. However, when compared to SR2 it's a terrible pile of gak. As mentioned they just cut out everything that made sr1 and sr2 memorable like likeable characters and an incredibly played out storyline that made people actually care about the people they involved.
So what do you get when you take out customization, a crap ton of story telling, and likeable characters? SUPER ZANY FUN TIME! EXPLOSIONS! VIOLENCE! SEX TOYS FOR WEAPONS!
Saints Row was great to me because it had a semi realistic story with a dose of insanity. Saints Row 3 cranked everything up as high as it could go, and like everything done to excess, it quickly got stale.
Also, I'll complain about this now like I complain about it every time I talk about SR3 on these forums.

3 is a flaming pile of crap, which is a shame because I loved SR2.
SR2 was a light-hearted version of GTA. Driveby shootings to Panic At The Disco, spraying gak all over downtown. They were good times.
SR3 is just weird. What's the point of a gangster game if the world is so silly that your own badass behaiviour just seems par for the course? And an opening sequence that sees you holding down the left mouse button for about 15 minutes. Just awful.
Oh and they ruined the Saints. I just don't buy the idea of a street gang launching a soft drink, it's just stupid.

This is where my even temper comes in. I think that I could have enjoyed the setting and the if the game was just better in the other areas.
I think the thing that disappoints me most is the gangs. I like the three gangs in 3. They are all neat concepts and I can see a lot of things you could do with them. The problem being that SR3 dose nothing with them.
I also liked stag for the most part. Cool laser guns and flying bikes. They are what I wanted to see in the pyramid.

Wow, had no idea this was so controversial. I really enjoyed this game. It was wacked out and fun.
And not enough character customization options? I thought it was pretty damn good, on par with Skyrim, better in some areas with the tattoos, and far superior to something like mass effect.
I might have to get sr2 if you guys think its so good though...

Really, you should play the first one first. It sets the stage for everything, and 2 continues the story line with a lot of recurring characters. Automatically Appended Next Post: Testify wrote:Driveby shootings to Panic At The Disco, spraying gak all over downtown. They were good times.
I completely forgot the soundtrack had Panic!. Back then I was the only person I knew who even listened to them, and when they came on the radio, it just made everything that much cooler.
Also special mention of The Used. Nothing quite like listening to All that I've got while getting chased by the cops.
This actually reminds me of another point. SR 3 sound track was terrible. I couldn't find a single radio station that wasn't god awful. Twas a damn shame that I went in the options and eventually just disabled all radio stations so I could have silence.

and SR2 has way more customization then SR3. It's just totally crazy, maybe 3 times the number of slots, you can layer different tops and bottoms on top of each other. You can pick your pants and socks separately. Pick from dozens of rings and pick what finger they go on. Go from bikinis to hotdogs and so much in between. There is so much there I can't even describe. It was the best customization system ever and I play the sims so I know about crazy customization.

Don't think, just do it. You should be able to pick it up pretty cheaply too. Saints Row 3 was fun, after all who doesn't like farts in a jar or beating people to death with a giant purple dildo, but it didn't compare to SR2.

Maybe. The problem with saints row 3 is that it's just not as good as it should be. They changed so much that they shouldn't have and that makes it hard to like it for what it is.

I liked it too, but perhaps I was blessed for not playing SR2. As a stand alone game with virtually nothing to compare it too, I thought it actually rocked solely for the fact that the developers clearly got to the point where they just said to themselves, "Ok, just flakk it all, this is our last run, we're just gonna turn up the amp until it breaks."
And because that's exactly what they did, I think it's a fitting end to the great genre, even if it didn't surpass the expectations of plot fandom of SR2.

This ^^.
I really enjoyed SR3, I had a lot of fun playing it, casually, going thru the storyline and creating a ridiculously insane character. Excellent open world gameplay that is hard to fault on its own, without fanboy expectations. That said, I did buy SR2 during the Steam Holiday Sale, and look forward to whatever it has to offer as well!

I kind of wonder if people will like saints row 2 after playing 3. They are quite different. I mean the most impressive thing was seeing six voice options and you think oh neat it's going to be like most games where you have maybe 3 lines and a lot of grunts only to find out your fully voiced and very mouthy. That was so cool the first time. It loses some impact the second time.

What I really liked was you say different things with the different voices instead of the same lines just said with a different accent.

Ya that was a nice improvement in 3, but I also found the boss less interesting too. Such is the dual bladed sword of SR3

Oh, I was more or less talking about 2. I imagine 3 did it too though.
And yes, the bosses were terrible.
EXCEPT the Luchador part. That particular spot made me laugh pretty hard, but that's about it.

Just another valid thing they could have touched on in the third, but who needs character development when you could have ZANY FUN TIME!!1
Thinking back, I think they did show some emotion with Shaundi, but...well Shaundi was weird in sr3. They made a pretty radical shift from laid back stoner to a pushy, violent hardass. Not that there's anything wrong with that in itself, but that's not really shaundi. Perhaps kicking it with the MC hardened her too? Well that's something else they didn't touch on.
Lost potential, lost potential everywhere.

I think Shaundi was done well myself. She was by far the most effected by at any rate, which made her personality shift understandable and believable.

The thing about SR3 is that it's just too short. They didn't really have a lot of room to really flush out anyone. Angel is the worst, I think he gets one or two missions and that's it. SR2 was much better at giving characters the time they needed to have development and characterization.

Also in regards to Angel, I did the tiger missions before I even met him in the story. Throughout the missions I hear the MC talk about some guy called Angel, and a lot of stuff that made no sense, considering what part of the story it was in. Then I get back to the main missions, and I eventually get to the part that explains why I'm even riding around with a tiger in the first place. Talk about bad design.
Also, the rewards for the extra missions were painfully bad. Did you even get anything? The rewards in SR2 were superior in every fathomable way.

Well they put all the good rewards into the leveling system. The leveling system is something that I wanted, but the income cap really causes problems with it.
