I was investigating another system to get into, and I saw Australian Army models under the British section of FOW on Wayland's site. This caught my eye and made me start wondering...

Questions:

1. Are they useable as a stand alone army? Or do you have to include them as a part of a larger British army?
2. Can they only be used against other armies involved in the desert campaigns
3. How does FoW match up against 40K and Warmachine (the other 2 systems that I play), is it more clunky or more intuitive, is it faster paced or slower, that kind of stuff.

Thanks for your help

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I just got into FoW too. And am learning the game right now. I also play 40k and Warmahordes and from what i saw so far (played ~6 Games) i would say its much nearer to 40k than to warmachine. Which definitely doesnt mean that its like 40k. Some of the mechanics in FoW have similarities to 40k like the german Stormtrooper Special Rule which is similar to having Flight Modules in 40k. On the other hand there are many mechanics that are different to 40k. The main difference is that in flames of war most of the units just dont work without being supported by others and that there are no such stelar units that you build your army around. Its more about finding the right balance within your whole force than getting that melee unit to assault in turn 2 and chew through a unit or two.

Warmachine kinda died in my club slowly and im sick of 40k at the moment. Thats why i got into flames of war and so far i really enjoy the game and the models. Painting 15mm scale is much easier to do than i expected.

Again thats the perspective of someone that just got into the game.

Cheers, I figured it'd be closer the the larger scale of 40k than the skirmish-y nature of warmachine. Do you also know anything about the specific Australian/British questions I asked?

Good to know it is good fun, and I was wondering how hard they are to paint at that scale, glad someone new to them isn't struggling too much.

I would leave those specific questions about the australian to someone that knows some more about the possible lists in the game since thats the hard part .

Basically the Australian army list is a mid war list (so you need mid war books)

The army list will give you options, some may be Australian, some British, some Canadian etc each nation has it's own special rules.

So have a look for the Africa book (I think it's that one) and see what the options are.

It is worth noting though that if you use an Australian rifle platoon to represent a British/Canadian/NZ rifle platoon most people won't care as distinguishing them at this scale is tpugh

Back in the English morass

The Africa book and probably the early war mediterranean books (I don't own them) are the only ones with Australians as they were redeployed to the Pacific after the North African campaign.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Thanks to you also. I'm trying to resist, but the option to field an army of diggers is so hard to deny

So 3rd ed rulebook, Afrika and North Afrika seem to be the ones to peruse

It's for the Cassino Infantry Aces campaign. Think of it as the thing your club buys together.

I mean it says 'map and marker and pins', so does that mean its a big map you roll out and mark positions on etc?

Here's what the map looks like:

Pins are just that: things you can put on backpacks or clothing.
