Say I take a Medusa and the Bastion Breacher shells.
Can I fire the normal rounds one turn and the breacher shells another turn, or do I always have to fire one or the other?

Please read the codex before posting answers like that. This is entirely wrong, the bastion breacher shell description clearly says that it ALWAYS fires with that profile. If you buy the upgrade you may ONLY use those shells, not the original ones.

I have read the codex. It does not say you can only fire the type of ammo. That is why I am asking.
whoops.
Read a little further. It does say that for the BBS.
Sorry bout that.

I wasn't talking to you with that, I was addressing the quoted person who gave the wrong answer because they didn't bother looking it up before posting.
Anyway, there's no "standard" answer. Some ammo upgrades let you choose which to use, some don't. The only way to find out is to read the specific rule in question.

Normally, I'd say that just like frag and krak missiles, you may fire whichever is more advantageous, but the listing specifically states that the Medusa "always fires using the following profile." It apparently hasn't been errata'ed. Discuss it with your opponents, or submit it to GW for clarification.

What exactly is there to clarify? The rule is perfectly clear, if you take the upgrade it replaces the standard profile. Why do you think it's so cheap?

I suggested asking for clarification because GW is notorious for poorly written rules that did not convey the meaning the writer intended. It is entirely possible that this is one of those instances, but merely unnoticed as of yet. Automatically Appended Next Post: As for why the upgrade is so cheap, I would suggest that that has more to do with the smaller blast template and the loss of Ordnance than a restriction on use.

It would be I guess a bit broken if I could switch. I mean 48" range first shot, then move in 2 rounds to fire a larger blast.

It's possible in theory, but there's no reason to believe it, just like there's no reason to believe that guardsmen being T3 is a typo and they're supposed to be T10. The rule is perfectly clear and nothing else gives even the slightest hint that the wording is a mistake.

I guess you missed the " 2D6 and add together for armor penetration" part, which is way better than ordnance? For only +5 points this would be incredibly overpowered if it let you keep the standard shells. It's a cheap upgrade because you have to give up the large blast shot to get that power.
