Title says it all - is it still based on the old book from 2005? The blue one with The One Ring on its cover?
We are neither interested in the "huge armies" thing, nor in "The Hobbit", we just want to play the good, old Skirmish LotR tabletop we used to play what feels like ages ago

Well the Hobbit is the "Fifth Edition", if you like, of the rules. All the sourcebooks still work with the new rules.
Otherwise it's the old blue book with the One Ring on the Cover, yes.

Thanks for the quick reply!
So the sourcebooks for the big battles thing are also the "codices" for the SBG?

War of the ring The hobbit is the SBG rulebook, and War of the ring is used for massive battles. the sourcebooks (Angmar & Moria, Free peoples etc) Are "codexies" for the Large rulebook. also i belive there are updated statlines in the Hobbit rulebook for most units in LOTR

As Rarmah already stated, yes, War of the Ring
I don't like it as first of all, it requires you to buy a LOT of new mintuares and secondly, it reminds me a lot of WHFB which is pure trash with 8th. Lots of good memories with the SBG however!
Which source books are the ones we need to use now? On the one hand, there are the War of the Ring books, but on the other hand, there also are the old "brown frame" books that have been released after the Mines of Moria set.

Well, you'll be looking at the Mordor, Fallen Realms, Moria & Angmar, Free Peoples and Kingdoms of Men books. They've replaced the old brown-frame books.
