I would never, ever, ever tell anyone to not play Dark Eldar. However, starting out, they are not a forgiving army at all. If everything goes right, prepare to knock out the enemy combat effectiveness in one or two turns. If not, the Dark Eldar cannot take return fire at all and you'l be wiped out quickly.

Ill tell you what I tell everybody else; go to 1d4chan and read all of the army entries. It will give you a hilarious (and accurate) rundown of their fluff, tactics, and how the scene views them. And obviously browse GWs site. Just read up on each army and pick what suits you. Like many have said already, pick an army youre going to enjoy sitting around on your desk/table/shelf most of the time. Its a big investment and performance is only half the appeal.

If you like Tau as much as it sounds then go ahead and start with a basic force. Buy an HQ to get a cheap start on painting, and if you like him then grab a troop, then an elite, so on and so forth. Use army lists to give you ideas for your must-have units and loadouts and take it from there.

Deciding what army to play really depends on why you are getting into the hobby.

If you are getting into the hobby to paint and model, browes the GW sight and pick the models you think look the coolest.

If you are getting into the hobby because you like the story, read up on the Fluff of each army and decide which one is most appealing/entertaining to you.

If you are getting into the hobby because you like the actual game play you need to take a slightly different approach. Ask your self how you envision you would like to play. I understand you might not really know much about the game, but ask your self what is your temperment. Do you want to go charging in head first to hack things in CC? BA, Orks or Tyranids might be best for you. Want to avoid the enemey and shoot him to death? IG and TAU might be best. Want to do a combination of the two? SM CSM GK. Necrons, and SW would be good. Want to out manuver and your opponent? Eldar or DE might be for you. You want to pick an army that fits your disposition as a general. That way you aren't asking your army to do something its not designed for and you will achive better results and enjoy the game more.

I only just started myself and decided to go chaos, purchased the dark vengeance pack which is pretty awesome, also love the whole corrupted death machine thing they got going on which also helped me when making the choice
