Hey guys, I play grey knights, but becoming a bit bored of painting silver and with playing them, so am thinking of starting a small army on the side to mix things up. Whatever one I choose, I will just be buying and painting one or two units here and there to break up the painting of my gk army.

Problem is I pretty much like all the models for every race, except tau (just hate their style), or eldar (because my brother plays them)

So, in general looking for something a bit different to grey knights, for both painting and play style, quite like Dark Eldar, Guard, Nids, Crons and Chaos.

Thanks Dakka.

Go for the polar opposite and pick up Daemons!

I would go with IG. Their play style is very different, but they compliment your GK very well while you build up the army.

I actually love the look of Daemons but know nothing about them or how they play, anyone care to share some insight on them

I'm also planning on starting them actually, just bought my first few units. While I haven't yet played with them, from all the research I've done they seem to be a very aggresive army. Everything has to deep strike, with half coming in on turn one and half being normal reserves. Synergy seems to be very important with them, as does being very precise with what you do.

Can any current Daemon players give more insight or tell me if I'm off base?

Not to sure on the Daemons tbh, some of the stuff is cool but I dont think its my type of playstyle, prefer more shooty. So maybe guard, or dark eldar, nids I always think about in the back of my mind but dont really want to paint a horde of bugs :/

I'd go IG. Good allies with your GK while you build them up, yet play so much differently than the GK.

Is guard fun to play though, or is just a case or roll dice, and repeat?

Since you play GK, I'd opt for a non-MEQ army, like DE, Daemons, Orks, or Nids.

Not really keen on orks, but nids I have had a soft spot for, not sure I could handle glass cannon De but the models are gorgeous

Nids, daemons, guard, de, are all possibilities. I like them all just the same so need people to decide what to go with. I might start a poll next week, and whoever is highest, I will start that army

Well I play DE and must say I truly love them, they play so fluent and can really punch above their weight when used right. They sometimes get their narrow arses handed to them on a plate but that is part of the appeal. They were certainly a welcome change of pace from the vanilla marines I have played for so many years.

I have also just started collecting a guard army and am really looking forward to playing with them. I just love the military feel of them and the mentality of 'guns solve all your problems'

Which of your potential new armies do you have the best feel for? Are you drawn to one more than the other? If so I'd go for that one. Despite everyones opinions on here it is you that will be playing them and any army no matter how small an army you get it requires a significant investment in both time and money so make sure you don't regret your decision in the long term.

Go with DE, after a long search I must so that they are the army that I prefer. You need to play well, you need to understand how to play and if you make mistakes prepare to lose. Welcome to hard mode.

Guard. Those DE are wavy to fickle and all or nothing.
Plus DE dudes wear skintight leather suits. Yuck.

Guard allows you to do a lot of tanks, and who doesn't like those, right?

Well, you're looking at two shooty armies, so I guess te next questions to ask are how mobile do you want to be, how forgiving do you want your army to be, do you want tanks or skimmers, etc. They each have a distinct feel and playstyle, so figure out what you want from an army and which one can fulfill that better.
