Hey Dakka,
It's your friendly crime-fighting crimsonfist-man again!
I got working on my Dark Angels half of Dark Vengeance recently, building them all up after a hiatus from my Dark Angels (turns out the rest of them have been 'dispensed' throughout multiple failed projects). I built them and got to spraying, having only sprayed one Tactical, one Deathwing and one Ravenwing (as test models) before my Chaos Black primer decided to empty itself out. Annoying, but I got working nonetheless. Here is the Tactical marine of Squad Aphael of my D.I.Y. Chapter the Vigilant Doom. I took everything as inspiration from the Executioners hued-metals scheme. I know this isn't the greatest picture and that he isn't the greatest painted model but I find him satisfactory to my skill level.

He looks pretty sweet to me. I notice that the skull on his face and the aquila are both the same color as the base color. No judgement, but is that accidental, a purposeful artistic decision, or just laziness? (As I said, no judgement, I've done the same thing for each of the above reasons at different times...)

I definitely think that you did a great job of keeping your paintjob simple and sweet. The metallics aren't clumpy or streaky, which is always a risk with metallic colors across fields this broad. All in all, a most excellent piece of work.

Thank you. Umm yeh I do have to work on thinning down my paints and such. There are washes on the model. The model is that new Boltgun Metal paint washed several times with Asurmen Blue (old wash) and Nuln Oil (new Badab Black wash). I have the rest of my army to practice on so hey-ho, hopefully I shall improve and as the age-old saying goes, practice makes perfect.

Hey Jim. Thanks for the comment. The skull and aquila are purposely that blue-tinged silver yes, sorry. As I mentioned the scheme is very heavily inspired by the Executioners scheme and on the Executioners artwork their chest adornments and the like are the same colour as their armour, with the exception of icons in the centre of their breastplate being the darker more black metal. For example, the wings are just wings on this minie, no eagle or skull but on those with eagles or skulls or a shield that would then be the same black metal as the backpack/shoulder pad trims. Thank you for saying that. I done him in relatively poor light and thought he was good, checked on him in the morning and saw pieces of the wash were very uneven and such so I've tried to patch that up and such, but yeh thank you. I know I am not the best but it is nice to have people compliment my work.

I got too do a little painting today after I slept on it, and I have repainted parts of my Tac. I have evened out/tidied up parts of the blue-tinged armour so it's more.... even :/ I have painted a brighter red over the existing one so it isn't as dark and dull, re-painted the legs because god it's shocking! I went far too heavy on those legs with the snow. I have also had the idea of heavily drybrushing my models with Longbeard Grey which will complement the snow base and look like he just weathered one hell-of-a storm, plus, also works well with my board Can you guys take a look and give me your opinion(s)?

Note: Just as a note, even though I do ask for your opinions/C&C I will be going forward with this white drybrushed armour (even though it does mask and dull the silvers) so I really just seek ways on how I could improve it and such.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Having shown this to a few friends, they like it a lot, the whole concept and such. Their only problem is the drybrushing is, in their own humble opinions, too heavy. I can see why that is and I will admit, I think I may have gone a little over the top with this haha I got a little excited. This model is at it's heart technically a test model, so I will improve. Having said that, I like it and I think he looks better in the flesh.

I like where this is going !

A few comments :
I like the base metal blue colour, where's that from?
Your white dry brushing is perfect. I'd wash blue on this, then pick out the details
I am on Jimsolo wagon on the details. The aquila and the skull I can get, but if you want the armour colour to stand out, try to pick a different colour for the bolter casing. I'd say a black or a red. That will highlight the armour colour.

Thank you very much Seb.
Umm the base blue-hued metal is simply a basecoat of Leadbelcher followed by several coats of the Asurmen Blue wash (that is the old blue wash though, not sure what the new one is called). I just washed it until it came out even and blue.
Thanks! I watched somebody do it in my LGWS and thought I'd give it a go. Guess I'm not doing it too wrong, although it is heavier in some places and lighter in others, but overall I'm happy with it.
Ah yeh. This. I also got inspiration for the weapons from the Executioners scheme also, who have their gun casings in the same blue metal as their armour with light gold/bronze strips on them, usually at the front towards the muzzle. I will be putting on bits of red and such on other models to vary the guns more.
Thanks as always.

It might look pretty cool to have the snow have "melted" in certain areas which might be warmer than others - the vents on the backpack perhaps, and of course he wouldn't get snow clinging to him in any crevices.

I agree yeh. I have kept it completely away from armour joints because the constant motion of them would just grind and melt the snow from the friction. Is there any chance you could further explain that? How would I go about making it melted in certain places?

Well, don't have the heavy white drybrushing on those sections, you could also give it a bit of a touch of gloss varnish or water effects to make it wet-looking, with it "drying" and being a normal matte finish closer to the heat source, as required. You can also make slush by mixing snow powder with water effects, but it's probably a bit too tricky to use in this case. A bit of water effects could also simulate dripping water down armour plates if you apply it carefully. It really depends how crazy you want to go with it.

Personally, I'd suggest just using the gloss varnish, as I think the others might be overkill for a tabletop army.

Oh I get you yes. I do happen to have a pot of Gloss Varnish in my mega paint set that I got last christmas so I guess that I'll use that then. I did put a little of the drybrushed white on the vents on the backpack, didn't think about them being hot and melting the snow so, I'll apply some of the Gloss Varnish then. Thanks for that LadyCassandra!

Just as an update I got a Ravenwing Biker done. The Ravenwing are known as the Seekers in my Chapter so you will have to excuse me should I use that term rather than Ravenwing. I done him, slept on it and thought he was really shoddy so fixed him up a bit yesterday. I fixed up the drybrushing and repaired his one eye lense which happened to get in the way of the drybrushing a bit I am also working on one of my Deathwing, or Juggernauts as they are known as in the Vigilant Doom, I do hope to have a picture of him posted tomorrow or the day following tomorrow. This following picture is a very poor picture (taken using my mobile camera, but the sun was very, umm, sunny so it glared a bit) so excuse me if it's blurred in places and hard to make out. I present to you all an Attack Squadron Space Marine of Squadron Udariel of the Seekers.

Well, it seems I got my Juggernaut (Deathwing) done far quicker than I had ever anticipated. He's done! Again, the picture isn't the best, I do really need to perfect a picture taking method and/or get hold of a light box, my money is all tied up in primer and the new DA models unfortunately so bad photos will have to stay for the time being. Well, as with the Seeker I present to you all a Juggernaut Terminator of Juggernaut Terminator Squad Innael of the Juggernauts (of course).

Note: it may not be very clear in the picture, but his helmet is black. His shoulders are painted bronze as well. These two colours are used to further define the Juggernauts apart from their power armoured brethren, and to further denote their veterancy.

I very much so, liked your first attempt better then the others. By a lot TBH. Im not knocking dry brushing at all, but before your Marine looked pretty decent. Now, they look messy. Again, dont want to come off as that guy, but the first one looked like you cared, the rest, look like you dont.

Well KingCracker that is perfectly fine by me. You most certainly don't 'come off as that guy', you are entitled to your own opinion as is everybody, I do seek C&C after all even if it is bad. I must say, I did like my very first attempt, especially so when I fixed him up. I like the Executioners look a lot! I added the drybrush as I had it on my mind for a long time and I don't know, something about it is very appealing to myself. It fits into the board I am planning, it fits with my favourite base type (snow if you didn't notice), it fits into background, it fits into the themes of one or two armies I also know of (family and friends). I can see why you would think that. I was hesitant at first but I like how they look with the drybrush now more-so than without. I may at some point, when I add reinforcements to my army, make another detachment without the drybrushing to represent a task force newly directed to the warzone that Task Force 'Invictus' is currently involved in (Task Force 'Invictus' being the name I have designated to my army). Thanks for your C&C however. Love to get constructive crit.
