The local concensus here in Israel is that IG Company and Platoon Standards are not very useful at all, as they mostly confer CC bonuses (and IG should never take any CC options). Is this concensus correct?

Platoon standard = totally uselss.

Company standard = almost mandatory for foot lists.
The 12" reroll moral tests is fantastic for anchoring a line, keeping your squads from breaking (especially low LD ones like HW squads)
For 15 points its like having half a commissar in any squad nearby.

And, most importantly, the bonus applies to units like HWS that can't take commissars.

Of course the drawback needs to be mentioned: it takes up a melta/plasma slot. If you're using the CCS as a static support unit that's fine, but if you want to make use of its melta/plasma delivery ability then you never want to waste a gun slot on anything other than a gun.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

If your CCS is riding in a Chimera, it's likely that the rest will also be riding in Chimera's meaning the banner won't be as useful until they are forcefully ejected.

Platoon Standards are a total waste of points. Those 5 men are getting cut down regardless of what they bring or who's attacking them, so no point.

Company Standards, are much more useful. They do a better job of keeping foot lists in check, with the re-rollable LD for models around it.

So for foot-lists: Company Standards are pretty much mandatory
For Mech Lists: You can be better served by bringing an extra Plas/Melta

I'm a big fan of the 70 point CCS with a magic flag and a mortar, hidden someplace back behind the lines where I can keep the HWTs and Infantry squads in line with minimal exposure of my ultra fragile Warlord.

Unless you're using your CCS as a x4 melta/plasma delivery device, it's usually a good buy. That 12" reroll is amazing in foot lists. My guardsmen have stuck around from some rediculous moments thanks to that thing.

in a mech lists, it's up to you. If you really don't want the guys in the tanks being pinned/routed, it might be worth it. For most however, a 4th plasma gun does more.

For aircav, I have no idea. If you think your men will be landing close to one another might not be a bad choice, but I would think most of the time your guys are spread out making it worthless.

And platoon standards are useless sadly. Look awesome, but useless.

Regimental standards are also great for supporting artillery units, if your meta includes forgeworld. A basilisk heavy artillery gets four crewmen, and you only need one to fire the turret. Sticking 3/4 of the crew out front will give you some handy ablative wounds if you can make the leadership test to keep it on the table. The regimental standard helps with that quite a bit.

I'll just say it, although it's been repeated a million times before, a regimental standard is awesome, however, if you take it, you probably want to kit the rest of the squad with a HW Team and maybe (just maybe) a Vox if you want to. The choice really depends on what you want your CCS to do. If you want them to be classical "officers" and sit back giving orders to fire teams all around, yeah, standard+HW is the way to go. If you want to move, maybe ride in an aircraft/tin can and blast the lot of them, go for as many SW (melta, plasma) as you can get.

Platoon standards are essentially Instruments of Chaos. Even in an assault oriented army like Daemons it makes little sense, but it's definitely better than on five puny Guardsmen. Just accept that we can't do CC, throw away your platoon standard and move on.

Don't get me wrong, IG can hold its own in CC sometimes, but not through upgrades-that happens through the age-old IG maxim: "If in doubt, throw more men at it." In this case, your Sergeants die in challenges shutting down a scary character while the tide of bodies is hard to chew through in a single turn. Useful in a pinch, but base your army on it at your peril.

Is Kharn a Commissar that kills enemies or are Commissars Kharn wannabe's who don't have the balls to kill enemies?
