So I played my first real game on Friday and I lost horribly. I am pretty sure alot of it was how I was playing. I make no pretenses about being a total noob at the table top game. I am still working on what number on the dice I need so bare with me. My list is as follows:
Abaddon - 265pts
Sorcerer upgraded to a psyker mastery level of 3 - 162 pts
Squad 1 Bolt Pistol (x3); Boltgun (x3); Power Axe (x1); Power Fist (x1); Lightning Claws (x1) - 150pts
Squad 1 Champion Plasma Pistol, Boltgun, Power Sword - 50pts
Squad 2 Bolt Pistol (x3); Boltgun (x3); Power Axe (x1); Power Fist (x1); Lightning Claws (x1) - 135pts
Squad 2 Champion Power Maul, Bolt Pistol, Boltgun - 35pts
Helbrute - 100pts
Warp Talons - 175pts
Predator Destroyer Blades, Autocannon, Las-cannon on each side and the the guy in the top has a combi bolter. - 135pts

Grand Total is 1,222

In addition I have a Skulltaker and a Vindicator just recently and have not added those into my list but will. I am also playing as the Black Legion so I have Veterans of the Long War and Hatred I do believe.

OK on the the endless questions. I am sorry if I annoy but I don't have any chaos players around to ask.

1. I need to know how to play Abaddon. He has all of the marks of chaos but what is his Mastery Level. In the Codex is that a level 3 pysker can roll once on each of the Psychic Powers tables but does that apply to Abaddon?

2.Are the Disciplines of Biomancy, Pyromancy and Telepathy in the new rule book?

3. Since I play as Black Legion do I need to specifically pick a chaos god for him to follow to know what powers he gets or can I change that every game?

4. The Helbrute. I am unsure about the Crazed Special rule and how to put that into effect. I have only had to do it once and I am pretty sure I screwed it up.

5. Hatred special Rule. I know I get to re-roll wounds but only once? or on the first turn? I did this with my warp talons and wasn't sure if I could re-roll wounds the second time I was in combat.

6. Warp talons. So I can re-roll misses since I have lightning claws. I think. Now when I was playing on Friday the shop owner told me since I only moved 6 inches in the Movement phase I could use something and I didn't write it down. Something like Hammer of the Gods or something. I pretty much was landing on top of them.

I know I will think of more but really I just want to understand how to play Abaddon correctly.

In advanance sorry for asking very noob questions.

BUddy calm yourself. Every single one of these questions can be answered by reading the core rulebook or your codex. 6 is Hammer of Wrath its found in the core rulebook.

North of your position

2) Should be somewhere under the Chaos sorc entry.
3) No, no specific god. BL is universal chaos.

Should be in the rulebook indeed. 5 in the main.

1) Abbadon is not a psyker so he cannot take Psychic powers.

2) Yes they are in the back of the rule book.

3) If your talking about Abbadon he has all the powers he dosnt just choose one he has them all in every game.

4) The Hellbrute.. well it depends on the wargear you give him, I usually charge mine straight up toward the enemy, but if there's a flyer in the vicinity I tend to shoot that (like a turret ), But I usually deploy him in cover then move him, and sometimes getting him angry is really cool as well, the way the Crazed works is when there is a glancing and/or penetrating hit is scored against it and it is still alive by your next turn you roll a D3 then consult the table and this happens at the beginning of your movement.

5) You re-roll your failed hits to hit because of the hatred rule then you re-roll your failed hits to wound due to the shred rule that the Lightning claws have.

6) You re-roll your fails to wound because of the Shred rule for the lightning claw. Also the Store owner is referring to the Hammer of wrath rule which you use to attack first as it is resolved at I 10 and is Str of the model (unmodified) causing the attack and its AP is - so your opponent will be getting his armour saves.

Hope this Helps

1. Abbadon has all of the marks but is not a psyker in any way. He is pretty boss in combat though.
2. Biomancy, Pyromancy and Telepathy are in the core rule book. God specific lores are in the Chaos Codex, if you are a marked psyker you must roll at least once on your Gods lore but after that you can roll the rest of your powers on any of the core rule book lores available. You cannot roll once on each of the different Gods lores.
3. Black Legion follows all of Chaos, in rules terms there are no special rules granted by playing Black Legion though Abbadon himself grants some special rules such as Chosen becoming troops.
4. If the Helbrute suffers any damage (e.g. takes a glancing or penetrating hit) but isn't destroyed you immediently place a 'crazed' marker ont the model. At the start of all of your turns you roll a D3 and consult the chart if you have a crazed marker, after you roll on the chart remove the 'crazed' marker.
5. Hatred allows you to re-roll all misses in only the first round of a close combat. For the Warp Talons see the next question.
6. Lightning claws allow you to re-roll wounds only. The Warp Talons and all jump infantry have a special Hammer of Wrath attack that only applies if they use their jump pack in the assault phase instead of the movement phase. Also, if you use your jump pack in the assault phase you get to re-roll the charge distance.

As far as your list, I would check the point on the sorceror, if you indeed do not have any other upgrades other than the mastery levels that guy is way cheaper.

With Abbadon just get him into close combat and he should be fine, there are a few rare things out there that can give him a hard time.

A unit does not automatically come with VoTLW, if they do it is specifically stated in their entry, otherwise you must purchase it.

Hope this helps

Now I have the Sorcerer magnetized to be able to change him to a Lord. Do I want to change him to that?

If I keep the Sorcerer as is and since he is level three can I use a Discipline from each of my Psychic power cards?

I was playing against Grey Knights and Abaddon died before I could even get him into close combat.

Yup GK are called the Chuck Norris's of 40K for a reason

Keep The Sorcerer Since he is a good Support role, You already have Abbadon for your Assault role.

Also did you try to put Abbadon in a terminator squad? give that squad the mark of Slannesh and you will be fine against GK...

Also Vindicators are quite nice against GK because of the Pie plate it dishes out...

If you like Hellbrutes go for them but if you want to make them so that they bust Elite shock troopers (such as GK termies) equip a plasma cannon on them...

however Abbadon will benefit a lot from those terminators IMO...

I will start looking into terminators. I also have alot of cultists but they are just really gun fodder right?

First and foremost, proxy your troops as plague marines for the time being and play friendly games, because plague marines are the most forgiving unit for new players who do not know the rules so well, because they have Toughness 5, and Feel no Pain. As miniwargamer Dave said, you will lose less and love your life.

Second, put away Abaddon for now. At the 1k point lvl, he is just too expensive and would need a retinue of termi to deepstrike with minor risk or you need a Landraider to safely transport him across the field and assault. Wait until you have roughly 1750-2000 points worth of Chaos.

Once you feel that you are ready to wield Abaddon the Despoiler, and his Special Operations Chosen Squads I recommend you try these combination of Chosen squads

5 Chosen, vets, 5 Plasma Guns, Mark of Slaanesh, Icon of Excess. [Giving them feel no pain when the plasma guns gets hot is great! They can foot slog and shoot a max range of 24" with one shot or 12" and rapid fire. However, I still think you should max out to 10 men to get the most out of Icon and survivability]

5 Chosen, vets, 3-4 flamers, 1 Missile Launcher (substitute any heavy weapons that you want to spam), Icon of Vengence, Rhino, havoc launcher
[Missile launcher chosen for its blast or high str fire options to hurt mobs or av13. My friend likes to use Auto Cannons. The idea is to move rhino 6" then disembark Chosen 6" into cover and snap shot bolters and krak missile and havoc launcher can be shot from rhino at regular ballistic skill since it moved at combat speed.]

5 Chosen, vets, 1 missile Launcher [poor man's havoc squad but it counts as scoring]

5 Chosen, 5 Flamers (My favorite!), Rhino,Dozer Blade [A great anti-horde weapon, only second to Burna Boyz since their burna is also a power weapon]

5 Chosen, vets, 5 Meltaguns, Icon of Vengence, Rhino, Combi melta/flamer [Use to be great with the infiltrate and outflanking rule, but Chosen lost that in 6th edition. Now it is risky to move them across the board to eliminate opponent's av14 or T8 Monsterous Creature)

5 Chosen, vets, 5 Power weapons, Mark of Khorne, Icon of Wrath, (Not very point effective compared to termi who have armor 2+ and 5+invul)

also look at my thread for inspiration. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/494706.page#5116167
or look at other people's Abaddon list in this forum.

Yes. I essentially got the Chaos bits from two Box sets, but only one Helbrute and Champion.

I recommend you use those Chosen as your Aspiring Champions for your regular or plague squads.

try buying entire lots of Chaos or Codex Space marines from ebay just to bolster your army cheaply. Most squads would come with 2 flamers, 2 meltas, or 2 plasma guns. Devastator squads would be loaded with 4 missiles, heavy bolters, lascannons, maybe autocannons.

You could get different colors of green yawn or string and cover them to look like the swamp thing and count as plague marines.
