What box has given you the best conversion experience for your space marines? Personally for me it was hands down the plastic commander box, but I'm about to get a command squad and a DA veteran box which I'm sure will be awesome as well. So what says you dakka?

Chaos line marines. They come with many useful parts, handy even for loyalists. With a pair of snips, a knife and a file, that kit goes far. Very far. I've ended up using all of the available parts on some models, giving them chain bayonets, and trophies galore, making them look like good old fashioned veterans of the long war, just like the way grandma likes them! Next after that, I'd say one of the marine veteran kits. No specifics, because they all offer different stuff, but it's all good stuff.

Haha yah the chaos marines box is one of my faves, the berzerker box too(the older armor T shaped helmets are phenominal)! And I mean for loyalist marines too. For chaos it's soo much better. Hmm I didn't even think of the sang guard box, I love those chest plates and wings/power weaps. This is what I'm talking about!

And what other veteran kits are there besides DA?

Well there is the Command Squad box, sort of veterans I guess, comes with some cool stuff in there. And there are the Sternguard conversion packs.

Ahh yah, the command squad is next up on my list. Well the command squad and DA veterans box. The sternguard kit looked awesome initially but I've seen a few in person and ive been underwhelmed, and if I was gonna pay that price id probably just get the FW terminator upgrade kit with the 2 combis and other power weaps(because they are sized to regular power armor extremely well.

Wel, I took the line csm and used their parts liberally. 3-eyes helmet is a great devastator and tech marine helmet, and another one with the three vertical slits makes for a great old-pattern helmet. The bolters look way more characterful with belts hanging down, and the plasma pistol lends itself well for combo weapon conversions. The csm arms look more characterful too with the extra bulk, and I find them easier to paint nicely. The loyalists simply look unfinished by comparison. The old backpacks were better too. The new ones don't lend so well to conversion. Some of the zerker ones still do, but by and large, can't get that pre heresy backpack look as easily from the current bits. Nearly 80% of my marine army features custom work or kit bashing, and the csm are what took it the extra mile.... It was a lot of cutting and filing mind, but I'm pleased with the results

definitely. You can make DC/tactical marines out of the Death company box with acess to better exotics (like that awesome power fist in the Sanguinary guard pack.)

then you can use the Jump packs and chainswords from the DC box to make honour guard!

Not to mention all the BA fiddlies and shoulderpads

Plus the bolters look awesome, and a bit of a kit bash with an infernous pistol and Boltgun you can make a cool looking combi-melta

yeah, that bloody damn infernus pistol does make me jealous!!!! To get my combi-meltas, I took spare SM backpacks, cut off JUST the middle mass at the top that has the vents, glued 4 of them together and added a plastic ring on the end. I then took this assembly i made and swapped it onto a multi-melta to get the normal melta tubes to use on combi-meltas. (I mean, hey, a multi melta is haevier, so it looks fine looking bulkier..... right.. ... right??????). I would have loved to have access to infernus pistols... I uh... heh...heheh.. just didn't feel like coughing up just to get combi-meltas on a refurbishing project.
