I have just been reading the necron tactica article and came over all panicky when I read about mind in the machine. Am I right in thinking this requires Los and would popping smoke prevent this ability from being used, temporarily?

What other ways would there be of preventing your own land raider being used against you with this ability?

I don't play Necrons but a friend has started collecting them and I need every bit of help I can get :-)

Does popping smoke say it prevents Line of Sight?

Preventing any vehicle is as simple as keeping it out of Line of Sight.

Not an easy task!! Especially if that necron HQ is on a barge, making it higher up. Also if you put your Vehicle out of Los then it can't shoot the necron HQ.

Any helpful suggestions, not that yours wasn't deathreaper.

Really, when it comes to necrons, you kind of just have to improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Keep your vehicle you do not want shooting your own units in reserve or turned to face a board edge so it can't see anything.

A necron HQ in a barge can not use mind in the machine. He may only draw line of sight from the barge for certain purposes, and special abilities are not one of those purposes.

Ah ok that's good to know, so he would have to dismount the barge to be able to use mind in the machine? So when he gets out, nail him with every las cannon and missile available!!

I have only played against Necrons once, at the Animosity campaign weekend. I lost miserably, I was so totally unprepared against them, didn't know what to expect.

Hmmm is close combat their weakness?

Apart from MSS + warscythe lords against small, elite CC units, combat ICs etc. Swamping them with bodies works very well.

Necrons also have one of the best CC units in the game, Wraiths.

So while CC looks like Necron weakness, because of Wraiths and MSS it is pretty easy to make competitive Necron army that is very strong in CC too.

Unfortunately, the smoke launchers only make you obscured, not invisible, which means you only get a 5+ cover save IIRC. You can use it if Mind in the Machine is a shooting attack, otherwise smoke doesn't help.

However, Mind in the Machine is an attack used by Anrakyr IIRC, who isn't too bad to face considering some other Necron characters, most notably Zahndrekh and Trazyn. He's not that difficult to kill, so try and power through his 3+ save before he gets the chance.

I can verify this to be very true, Necron appear to be weak in CC but I have taken many opponents by surprise(they thought Necron were bad at assault) by smashing through their big bad CC units with wraiths and a destroyer lord. That's what the list in my signature is, 2 squads of 6 wraiths with a destroyer lord each backed up by night scythes dooms scythes and an annihilation barge, the list hits very hard and is much more mobile than most opponents would like.

Mind in the machine is not affected by popping smoke but you just have to make sure that your vehicle is facing in a way that it's weapons can't hit anything you care about.

MSS' are annoying but easy to get around/counter. Wraiths are flippin annoying though, they're my favorite unit in the codex. Normally Str 7- shooting can handle these guys, save the str 8+ for the bigger things like QSing vehicles or flyers.

Most vehicles I can think of have a turret, you can spin the turret to fire.

Just hope he can't draw LOS to anything truly nasty

I actually give the destroyer lord MSS most of the time but they are really just their for challenges I bring the destroyer lord for his warscythe, high toughness, and favored enemy(since he passes it to the squad, and gains fearless from them). Most of the time I will run the destroyer lord in front of the wraiths to eat a lot of shots(from non-ap 1 or 2) weapons with a 2+ armor save. If you are really tring to deal with wraiths str 6+(prefferably 8+) is your friend as it will wound on 2s and make them make a lot of saves, 8 is better though because then every wound is a dead wraith.

I love Mind in the Machine. I used it against my brother's Dreadnought so that it melta'ed his other Dreadnought in the back. Very fun.

Then again, I've also had my Wraith and Destroyer Lord unit get wiped out to an Assault Squad and Apothocary. Bad rolls on my part.

Did he fail to mention he had Anraykyr? I would never list special abilities of every unit on a hand written army list. It's your responsibility to ask, or find out the hard way.

Biggest thing is he can't draw LOS from the CCB. If he could he might actually be taken in more competitive lists.

Yup! I asked him what his HQ was and he told me it was "a Necron lord". I'm familiar with Anraykyr, just didn't know he was bringing it. Needless to say, I was quite cheesed off after that match.

Wait, so if he can't draw LOS from the CCB, does this prevent him from actually even using the ability at all while on the CCB?

Yes, Anrakyr cannot use his Mind in the Machine while embarked in any transport, including the CCB.

I would feel cheated by the fact that he said "Necron Lord" instead of Anrakyr for his HQ. The Drawing LOS for MITM is an easy mistake to make, so I wouldn't call cheating on that one.
