In the first lists of the 20 Primarchs that I ever saw, I remember being left wondering what happened to the 5 or 6 Primarchs who had no entries next to their names. This was a suggestion that I dropped in another thread, but it got gobbled up and drowned within the rest of the thread's activity.

++++

Personally, I'd love to see one of the "lost Primarchs" from the initial establishment of the Space Marines show back up at the head of an entire legion. I'd love to see them return, after having been on a light-speed journey for 40+ thousand years in intentional cryo-, a last ditch effort from the Emperor to provide for his people. They return with a full STC database with what were some of the most senior Mechanicum of the period.

All of that, only to encounter the Administratum and their determintation to rule in the Emperor's place and the revulsion and terror of the STC's and Space Marines in Legion strength.

My idea could spin off something else entirely than a new Imperium Codex. Afterall, the returning group would *KNOW* that the Emperor is not a god, and that there is no such thing as the omnisiah. If they managed to escape Terra, they would be a natural focus point for disaffected factions within the Imperium, but wouldn't be Chaos.

Thought? Opinions? Thrown pottery?

That list was retconned a loooong time ago. We know everything about the 18 Primarchs, plus the two that are heavily hinted to have been destroyed.
They are never coming back. I hate to be so blunt, but they won't. This thread comes up every three and a half days in some form, and there's always the "Yeah but WHAT IF?!" group, the "No, they're gone, now shut up." guys and the "OMFGZ THEY BETTER COME BACK OR I'LL GIVE UP 40K 'CUZ MY WHOLE ARMY IS MARY-SUE SUPAA FLUFF AND NEEDZES PRIMARCHS!!!111ONE" patrol. To stop that argument before it comes;
GW have said they're gone.
FW do the HH now, go get Primarchy goodness there
The time line will NEVER advance that far
And your idea you'd love is what Matt Ward has happy sticky boom boom dreams about.

At first I thought your suggestion was aiming to initiate some sort of "Brighthammer 40k" where the Space Marines save the day, the Imperium rejuvenates in the course of a couple years and everybody is happy because there's no Grimdark anymore. But your hint at the conflict that would very likely arise would be an interesting premise for a campaign, and whilst I don't think that the chances that GW would ever pull it off are in any way notable, it would actually be possible to fit it in with the existing material - preferrable not in M41 (the "End Times" seem pretty much dedicated to the Imperium fighting its last stand against Chaos) but as a short, earlier sub-era where the IoM was once again threatened by civil war, similar to the Age of Apostasy.

Bonecrusher 6 wrote:Afterall, the returning group would *KNOW* that the Emperor is not a god, and that there is no such thing as the omnisiah. If they managed to escape Terra, they would be a natural focus point for disaffected factions within the Imperium, but wouldn't be Chaos.
That I do not really see happening. The other Space Marines also "know" that the Emperor is not a god - or at so they claim - yet nobody pays them much attention. The Post-Heresy Adeptus Astartes exists apart from the wider Imperium, their political influence limited to the worlds they garrison themselves and the few allies that various Chapters have made. And even these allies, mostly Inquisitors and Imperial Commanders I'd presume, would just not talk religion with the Space Marines. It's quite simply a topic to avoid, as whenever it pops up there is a high chance of armed conflict.
Thus, when some forgotten Legion magically appears out of nowhere, threatening the status quo with suspiciously unknown technology and spouting anti-ecclesiarchal propaganda, I could imagine a big chance that some very influential people may start shouting "Chaos!" fairly soon.

It would be interesting to have a legion of rogue Marines that are still pro-Imperial, though. Something like a Loyalist version of the Red Corsairs. And whilst Terra itself might make a move against them, other Marine Chapters will find themselves in a tough spot, having to decide between fealty to the larger Imperium, or their Brother-Marines who seem okay, but whose nature (where have they truly been? why are they here now? what do they really want?) remains a mystery that would keep a lot of Chapter Masters from ever trusting them entirely. It'd kick a lot of already existing feuds between various Chapters into overdrive, and deepen the rifts that exist between Codex Chapters loyal to the High Lords and the more independent-minded ones. You think the Badab War was bad? This could easily get worse.

Potential for interesting stories full of deceit and loyalty, betrayal and brotherly bonds, and complicated diplomacy. Could make for a cool campaign to, as the conflict could be limited to a single region of space where this returning legion makes its temporary home, is then visited by massed forces of a wary Senate (possibly spurred on by the Inquisition), and then sees various other Chapters and more Imperial forces flock to both sides of the brewing conflict. All that's left is a burning match to light the fuse ... an event that could be brought about by something as simple as a Cold War-style combination of misunderstanding and paranoia, or even the hand of the Imperium's true enemies, be them agents of Chaos or the ever-scheming Eldar.

Some speculate they they originaly betrayed the emperor but did somthing redeeming in the end, so their reward was never being known to be traders.

The other reason i heard they left them as 'missing' is for fan made legions.

Pretre, that was not what I was asking about. Those primarchs were named and developed as characters.

The list I was talking about had several entries that were either not detailed at all or reported as lost in the Warp. That implied that there were several more avenues of story development out there. Of course, Buca's polite shooting down of my idea more or less puts paid to it. Thanks for your coutesy, Buca.

Of course, I haven't played since 2nd ed. so the developments between then and now are still buried in a pile of unexplored universe history.

Not to be too blunt. But, its the second and eleventh legions that were destroyed. Its hinted at what happens to them in "First Heretic". Russ is sent to kill one, Gulliman is sent to take out the other. The subsequent legion was organized into the Thirteenth. Gullimans' numbers saw a boost when this occurred. So, as said before. NO LONG LOST PRIMARCH IS COMING BACK! Only time when the Pirmarchs will return is when it is the closing time. And, when the Terminus Decree is to be used. What happens from there is open to debate.

I like the OP's idea. It would be a pretty neat idea for a campaign if you had like 1 guy that wanted to use a Horus heresy Legion army in a regular 40k game. after all the smoke clears and the entire legion has been "silenced" by as many bodies as it takes to kill them all then every little bit of evidence swept under the IoM rug. "a legion of space marines from the past? i have no idea what your talking about, those were...uh.. tyranids.." would be fun but its kind require a lot of duec ex machina, I am sure Brian Herbert would do a great job writting a story like that.

Not really speculation. Rick Priestley confirmed that. However, it was retconned to impossibility a long time ago. So while it was probably once "true" (as much as anything can be true), it can't be anymore.

The other reason i heard they left them as 'missing' is for fan made legions.
This is another common misconception. The 1000 Chapters were for people to make their own Space Marine Chapters, as outlined in Rogue Trader. The idea of the 20 original Legions and the two missing ones came much later, and were never really for anything other than a bit of fluff fun for people to speculate. While nobody in the old days of GW would forbid anyone from saying their Chapter was the missing legion, that wasn't ever the intention.

I seem to remember that both chapters were destroyed before the discovery of Corax Corvus: when the emperor introduces himself he says something about him having only 17 brothers.

Magnus didn't get hounded into the Warp, he fled in to the EoT and is now made of magic and sits in the Tower of Art at Unseen University, er, a big tower on the Planet of the Sorcerers.
Sanguinus was simply killed, Horus was destroyed, mind body and soul, he was wiped from existence.
Dorn died fighting Chaos, some say he's missing, even older sources have him leading the Custodes on Terra.
Guilliman almost died after having his throat slit by Fulgim, he was put in stasis just before he died, some say he's healing. This happened about 200 years after he wrote the Codex.
The Lion got in a fight with his evil step dad, blew up his planet and has been asleep under his castle ever since.
Russ buggered off with the 13 company, his armour was found at some Chaos temple near/in the EoT, he said he'd return, I don't think they look for him.

I believe they advanced the fluff to 999.M41. However, I doubt we'll ever advance into the 42nd millennium, and that one year is likely not going to be enough for them to advance the fluff enough to rediscover a primarch.

Want to know why they won't ever advance into the 42nd millennium? Business standpoint. Everything right now for their flagship product (let's talk about stock GW 40k here, not the FW HH stuff - yes, FW is GW, I know), the tagline is "In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is only war!" Literally, they're going to have to change so much of their branding for that one thing alone.

Furthermore, it was a safe business decision for them to expand upon the HH line because by now, the fluff for that has more or less been set in stone and fans want some of that epic drama shazbot that went down almost ten millennium before. Extrapolating into the future would potentially divide their fanbase, heavily so too.

By the information people have pieced together, the "Missing 2" were among the first ten primarchs discovered (But after Lionel, Horus, Dorn and Guilliman). Many of the primarchs never even met them.

So whatever happened to the missing Primarchs happened very early in the Great Crusade. But again, nothing happened to them, because they don't exist, and there's no fluff for them, lol.

The story line does make it to the 42nd mill but only in vague reports from secondary chacters in the Ciphas Cain novels
One is a sarge under him in real time, but later is a general remembering his accounts

I don't really consider BL to be too canon when it comes to advancing the overarching storyline, but you're right about that.
