hi all
i am going to be getting the new dark vengeance starter set for 40k but im not ure if i want to use the dark angels as dark angels because their codex seems limited in my own opinion.
i want to paint the dark angels up with a white scars type paint job and have already created a fairly good army list using the space marine codex. i was wondering if its okay to just cut and file off some of the more prominent wings on some of the models but just leave most on (by this i mean the captain or librarian th one with the sword and the winged helmet).

would this be okay to do because i am just getting into 40k but previously painted lord of the rings. i am not a stickler for the fluff and if i go to the game store and say they are white scars and i am using the space marine codex they would be fine with it?

any other ideas on how to convert them to vanilla marines?[/img]

well even with a new codex coming out i would rather play them as vanilla marines. would the other players be okay with that if i specified i was using the space marine codex even with the wings on some models?

This all depends on who you are playing against. Some people will complain, ignore them. Personally? Power armor, is power armor, is power armor. I'd really only have a problem if they were Vanilla one game, BT the next, BA the next, etc., etc.

Personally, I was building a Deathwing army using Chaos Termintors because I thought it would look better.

I've seen them painted as Blood Angels and they looked lovely. The DA iconography is pretty overt, but a lot of it is similar to other Marine iconography and imagery. At the end of the day they're still dudes in power armor with boltguns, so use them for whatever you like. Just try not to paint them green if you want to avoid confusion.

I've taken off the DA iconography on the Dark Vengeance bikes to use them as the start of a White Scars army myself. a bit of clipping, filing and sandpaper and they're perfectly fine - go for it.

Well, you could take off the iconography. But this would be a shame. I'd keep it as it is and play the army as a successor chapter according to the vanilla rules.

thanks everyone!
I was thinking about just taking off some of the wings but not all of them because I do like the look of some of the wings and the larger ones I can pull out the hobby knife and a file.

I will probably go with a white scars paint job but call them something else as a successor chapter so people don't get to upset with some of the wing symbols.

Now what to do with the chaos side of my box set I do not know to bad it didn't come with a little tau army...

I was about to create a new thread for this, but this one is really close anyway.

I have the DV box and wanted to field the DA stuff with my CSM, so I figured I go with the Fallen for the DA stuff. One, aside from just black, are there any other prominent colors of HH-era DA/Fallen? My Google-fu came up with not much. Also, were/are there Fallen bikes/Terminators? The HQ's I'm going to do something else with, but what do you guys think?

My take on DA and converting them...

Not worth the time.

They have a ton of bits on them that would make fielding them as anything not DA be sort of weird. If you want more chaos, trade the DA half for the chaos half. That's what I did.

The DA captain has some potential, and with a little slicing and modelling would make a sexy lord of nurgle. Outside of that it's just not worth the time and effort when trading them for actual chaos figs isn't too difficult.

The Horus Heresy Collected Visions book has a couple pieces of DA art. Try googling that. But yeah, cream tabards and black armor are for the most part the extent of "canon." Bikes were jet bikes at that point. Terminators don't seem to have been used to a large extent.

But I won't be converting them. They will keep all their iconography, being that they are/were DA.

Thanks! Think it would be out of place to have the bikes from the DV as is, same with the terminators, in a force of the Fallen?

No, the bikes could be captured. Don't make it an HH era Fallen contingent

No way man, http://imgur.com/a/5LSz2 Took all of seven minutes to make him into a vanilla libby on bike.

Well I just ended up painting all mine and just called them normal space marines you cant really tell all they symbols for dark angels other than the robes and wings on the bikes.

Personally not really a big deal as they look pretty awesome and colour scheme isnt like any dark angels chapter I dont think
