Subject: Dark Apotheosis and marks of chaos

I was playing a game: CSM vs. IG and one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen happened; my cultist champion killed a guard platoon commander in a challenge and rolled dark apotheosis on the boon table! The thing I wasn't sure about was does he still retain his mark of nurgle as a demon prince? He also rolled multiple boons before and got icy aura and shrouded as well as multiple boons so would he have those as well or does dark apotheosis just make him a normal deamon prince with no equipment? Never the less, a cultist becoming a demon prince

I believe he'll become a Daemon Prince of Nurgle but as far as I can see will not retain anything else from his previous mortal existence.

I thought he lost his gear, but kept his boons? No codex to hand for me to check though I thought it was pretty clear in this?

I'm afraid not, the rules for Dark Apotheosis follow the rules for Spawnhood with a few exceptions.
Spawnhood stats that
The champion is now a separate unengaged, non-scoring unit that retains none of the champion's special rules or wargear.
The only exceptions in Dark Apotheosis is that he becomes a Daemon of X rather then retaining the Mark of X and he does retain the Warlord Trait if he had it.
Considering that you're replacing the model with the model of a Daemon Prince (and it's stats), improvements to the stat line won't be carried over and by the rules of spawnhood they will lose special rules like Fleshbane etc.

He retains the mark, in a way. He becomes a Daemon of X. He retains no special rules or wargear he had.
There is some debate as to if they retain previous Boon rolls and I am inclined to say they do. But its up for debate.

The daemon doesn't have the 'Champion of Chaos' special rule (and it's attendant sub-rules like the boons received). It's best just to treat it as an entirely new unit except for the warlord trait and the specific conversion to a daemon of X based on any previous marks it may have had.

All that lacking the Champion of Chaos rule does is it means you can't roll when you win a Challange. You can roll for other reasons.
A DP can purchase a Boon of Mutation IIRC. He can also be targeted by the Tzeentch boon power.
Given that Boons arn't special rules it appears you can keep preexisting boons. Although it is slightly shakey.

Im curious what justification you have for your stance that 'boons' aren't special rules?

Thanks for the clarification on the marks anyway and I still can't complain, I'm playing a campaign with permanent casualties and my cultist became a DP of nurgle so he certainly earned his points worth.

You would have to show they are special rules. As for what they are in the rules, Boons are just Boons. They are their own thing.

That's easy enough:
6th Edition Main Rulebook (page 32 - Special Rules section) wrote:"...Most special rules are given to a model by the relevant entry in its codex...
...Most of the more commonly used special rules in Warhammer 40,000 are listed here, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Many troops have their own unique abilities, which are laid out in their codex...
6th Edition Chaos Marines Codex wrote:"...CHAOS SPACE MARINES SPECIAL RULES
The Chaos Space Marines army uses a number of special rules that are common to several units, collected here for convenience. Special rules that are unique to particular units are presented in the relevant unit entry instead...
...CHAMPION OF CHAOS
It is not unusual for the Chaos powers to bestow strange boons...
So as you can hopefully see, boons are special rules, by virtue of being listed in the chaos marines special rules section, ' and' by virtue of the definition of a special rule given in the 6th ed BRB.

"Champion of Chaos" Is the special rule - not the Boons. You have made a transitive error, assuming that because CoC bestows boons, and that CoC is a special rule, that Boons are special rules

I don't see a permission to transfer the boons from the champion to the Daemon Prince / Chaos Spawn.
Since the Champion is removed, the model doesn't exist and therefore the Spawn/Prince don't have anything from the old champion model unless otherwise stated. (Which is the case for being Warlord and in case of the prince having the warlord trait)

No i didn't. I said they were special rules by virtue of being presented in the Chaos Marines special rules section, not because they were specifically referenced in the Champion of Chaos special rule.
