Thanks for all the replies guys! I had initially planned to be playing one of these armies, but you guys really turned me off to Grey Knights. So Daemons was the optimum choice, but it turns out that they're getting a new book in the future and I don't want to go out and spend a bunch of money when the stuff I bought is going to be obselete. I have to pick an army very soon so it seems I'm back to square one. If you guys don't mind giving a little more advice, it would be very much appreciated.

I need an army that is at least in the top 5-6 in competetive play. It can't be a horde army( It has to be relativevly cost effective). Cool Fluff and Cool Models. Good matchup against Tyranids.... I'm sort of leaning towards Dark Eldar, but feel free share your thoughts on my decision. Also, go ahead and throw an army out of the blue if you feel it fits my criteria.... Thanks for your patience

Dark Eldar, whilt they fit the 'cool' criteria, aren't effective in 6th. They may do well against tyranids, but only if they charge the tyranids and not the other way around, although shooty DE will be effective, especially against Nidzilla (Tyranid MC spam, poisoned weapons tend to do that)

If you like Daemons, though, maybe take a look at Chaos Space Marines, they have some cool fluff and models, and while they are a mid-tier army, they can potentially be a good match up against nids if you build your list correctly.

Ive played against lots of csm+demo. Ally armies, mostly of the nurgle kind.

Their strategy is gettin epidimius in as early as possible, then using their nurgle marked units to get kills to increase nurgles tallyman army buff that does crazy things like 3+ fell no pain, weapons ignore armour saves. Obliterators with T5 really help with this strategy.

Csm is varied enough that you can pick your playstyle and change the army accordingly.

Though I have to say again, if you like the GK models then go ahead play that army. I have a GK army just for the sole reason that I like the models, but I only play Templars. I just loan out my gk to friends.

You have to play an army you like looking at because unless you can afford to spend more than a significant amount of mkney on multiple armies, its better to go with something you think is cool. Codices can change how an army plays, which might affect how competitive they can be. Theres no gaurantee an army will stay high tier throuh codex changes and edition changes, and when that happens you will have to spend money again to get the latest flavor of the month competitive army.

Nothing in the current Daemons codex will become "obselete". Things will simply change. (and as any true Tzeentch player knows, change is nothing to be feared - it's simply going according to 'The Plan'!)

We should honestly know within the next 3 weeks or so if we are indeed getting the rumored new Codex/Army Book, or another WD update.

In the meantime, you cannot go wrong in any way picking out say 1HQ choice and a couple boxes of Troops to get you started.
If you want the 'safest bets', then I'd recomend picking up;
- A Herald of Tzeentch on Disc
- 1 box of Pink Horrors + The Changeling
- 1 box of Plaguebearers

That little lot gives you a speedy and very flexible HQ choice, a unit of shooters who can also cause some disruption, and a unit of objective campers who can also tackle high toughness gribblies in assaults if needs be.

Units that will almost certainly remain solid would be;
- Flamers
- Fiends of Slaanesh
- Screamers
- Daemon Princes
- Soul Grinders

Units that will likely get some minor ajustments;
- Most HQ's
- Bloodletters
- Daemonettes
- Nurglings
- Seekers
- Flesh Hounds
- the new Slaaneshii chariots

Units that will almost certainly get buffed;
- Bloodcrushers become true 'Cavalry' unit type just like the new CSM juggers
- Beast of Nurgle no longer being complete pants
- Furies actually being viable and not simply a free VP for opponents!

If you like Daemons, then go Daemons! It's not like we're suddenly going to become unplayable, or have entire armies become completely worthless!

Demons are just more fun. I dabbled in grey knights and just found them no fun at all. It's almost the same unit as every unit and it shows on the table.
Demons have various characters up the whazoo and then some. Every unit feels like it has a job and it loves it, in all its violence and death. And so many ways to die *supperhappyface*

I like them more as allies than a whole force though. That's an instant weakness covered so silly deep strike rolls don't matter as much.
Though demons don't tend to bring many friends to the table unless you think chaos are competitive enough for you to include.

Ok so tally lists probably won't survive, doesn't mean plaugebearers in armour with bolters will suddenly suck.

You are certain of CS or GK? Not even thinking about Orks? But if you are certain I would highly recomend CD heres a sample army list:

Bloodmaw's Ravagers
Bloodmaw the Bloodthirster
Unholy Might
270

Bloodrender a Herald of Khorne
Unholy Might
Iron Hide
100

Bloodrender's Hellblades
15 Man Bloodletters
240

The Head Takers
10 Man Bloodletters
160

The Ever Pestilent
14 man Plaguebearers
Chaos Icon
225

Total Cost 995
Strategy:
First deploy the plaguebearers to screen for the bloodthirster if they come in first , and if the bloodletters come in put the larger squad behind the smaller squad or hide them behind terrain if available. Then just general advance and make sure you use you plague bearers to take as many hits as possible and use them to bog down the big units while your bloodlettersletters kill off other squads. MAKE SURE YOUR BLOODLETTERS ASSAULT!!! The bonus initative and attacks are very helpful. Your plaguebearers are not terrible in close combat and their plagueswords are quite good as long as you hit first then wounding should be easier. Use your bloodthirster to take medium-low size squads or solo HQs. This should work quite well and make adjustments if you need to, and happy slaughtering!
Also if you like the names i assigned the various units feel free using them!
"FOR THE BLOOD GOD!"
"FOR THE PLAGUE FATHER!"

Daemons versus Grey Knights.

This comes down to one thing:

Do you prefer units that are flexible, and pretty good at everything, but don't really specialize in anything, or do you like units that are highly specialized and each have a single role, and do it very well?

Grey Knights do everything well, but don't really do anything spectacular.

Daemons are very specialized, and you need to take different units to fulfill different roles. Your close combat guys are, pure and simple, close combat guys. Your ranged guiys are just that.
