Is laminating the cards and equal alternative to card sleeves? Besides being able to take the card out of the sleeves are there any cons?

A friend of mine back in the day did that. It seemed to work just fine, though was a bit expensive.

And stuff.

Well, warcasters/warlocks come with two double-sided cards: the stat card and the spell card. You are only going to be making markings on the stat card. Also, lots of people like to get several casters to try them out, leaving quite a few cards. That being said, it's easier and quicker for you to just put both cards for that respective caster into one sleeve to avoid scavenging and checking to see if cards match.

With that said, I shall back away slowly and ominously and disappear in a puff of smoke, then smuggle some fruit across the border in order to stay competitive with the veggie cartel.

The only con I can think of is that over time, even if you're making the card with whiteboard marker, the plastic can get a bit stained, and if it were laminated you'd be unable to change it. That probably won't be a huge problem though, so I'd say go for it.
