I recently bought Total War: Shogun 2, and I'm having difficulty choosing which of the clans to choose from. If its not to much to ask, can I get some recommendations, advice, tips?

Maybe its me but I also tend to do best with good ol Oda. They are very close to kyoto so they dont need to waste a bunch of years trying to get a safe way there. Then again instead of actually fighting I just spam ashigaru stacks....

Other factions I've used at one point

Shimazu: had bad luck with these guys. you're stuck in a corner so you'll have to fight your way out
Takeda: Good cavalry, watch out though many people use spear ashigaru, and other spear units. Decent central location
Uesugi: Monks and stuff. Yea
Chosokabe: Good archers. But they're on an island so I tend to forget how easily some stupid army rams me in the behind with an invasion
Ikko Ikki: Like Uesugi but with no samurai. People dont like your religion too much so you can make enemies fast
Hattori: Ninjas everywhere. Also most of your army can deploy outside the deployment zone. Hurray

havent played the others. Also I tend to use mods, either darthmod or radius

grumble no one made a sengoku rance/musou/basara mod

Well I prefer to use the Shimazu or the Date, because well. We all love Katana wielding Samurais. And as for a few tips.

- Trade, this will really help you boost the early game. And makes for a great way to forge alliances with other clans too.
- Pick your wars carefully. Go for the small clans near you as soon as you can, their lands will be a good addition to your realm.
- Make good use of the research, and the various agents at your disposal.
- Keep your Generals loyal, and your armies supplied, and in friendly lands come winter.

Most important question: Shogun or Imperial?

You can abandon whichever cause during the game, or even abandon both and try to become Emperor yourself, but Imperial forces have a HUGE advantage over Shogunates thanks to guns, cannons (proper things, not the pissy little wooden ones) and Ironclads. If you want an easy-mode army, then Imperial is the way to go, with Shogunate forces being fairly difficult to use right.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I tend to play as the Chosokabe, decent position with the island, great archers really helps (especially in sieges), relativel close to Kyoto. But if you dont push money in to a fleet then you can easily become stranded, and as kenshin said, being on an island can mean that you get invaded out of nowhere...

Ive also truly struggled with trade in this game as opposed to other Total War games, it just doesnt give you the benefits/profits it does in the rest of the series...

ilove40k, have you checked anywhere to get reasons for the crashing? Do you have the latest patches etc.? And no, i found Shogun 2 far more buggy, but that may just be me...

The easier clans to play as are either the Date or the Shimazu. I personally prefer playing as the Oda because quantity is better than Quality of troops IMO. Also, it is easy to get rifles as the Oda.

Hmm.. I don't actually remember which clan i picked.. I just remember playing online a lot. I used tons of ninjas and would lead people into traps, works really well and will throw people off. I think for the single player mode i used the shimazu now that i think about it.

shogun 2 was probably the buggiest game I've played in a long time. It took me weeks to stop it from crashing in the middle of my games and I have a killer gaming system. Most of it had to do with my sound and video drivers, especially if you have ATI (use the driver cleaner..)

That was my biggest pet peeve with the game, apparently every province has an unlimited amount of extremely well armed and equiped rebels, it gets kinda convoluted after a while. Medieval 2 was a bit easier to believe in that if you got fed up you could wipe out the populace and it would be a long time before you saw another rebellion.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

There are two ways that the game calculates whether a province will rebel. The first is happiness. This is generated by certain technologies and also by certain buildings (like the geisha house or Sake den). the other way is by repression. This is generated by armies, buildings, some agents (Metsuke) and the like. Usually you'll need a combination of these things to keep a populace happy. Newly conquered provinces have resistance to invaders are more likely to rebel. You'll need to use the "Peacefully Occupy' option to get the minimum unhappiness when you take a province. Keep your conquering army there for a while to quell the populace and, if need be, exempt that province from taxes. Another way to keep a province repressed is to build larger forts.

I like playing Shimazu. Powerful samurai units. Very honorabru.
