Subject: What German Book Should I Choose?

Hello everyone,
I just bought the Open Fire! starter set and I also have 3 extra Stug G's from the war store, and don't know what book I should choose.
I want to make a balanced list, with a slight skew towards tanks but still with some infantry.
I would prefer late war but it really does not matter. (Also, as a side question can a late war army play against an early war one or not?)
Thanks so much for the help, Igloo.

Hell's Highway is a good Late-War book for the Germans or you could wait until Market Garden comes out .
Check out EasyArmy.com as well. You can build free sample lists and for only $1 you can gain access to any of the books!

Grey Wolf, with German armies on the Eastern Front. If your looking for LW and have that amount of StuGs, then try out the StuG Batterie. You can get a good mix of tanks and attached Infantry elements in that list. You would need to pickup another StuG for your HQ vehicle.

To answer your siide question no LW armies cannot play against EW armies. Well I guess technically you could try it but the balance would be laughably bad

Which book do think is better, greywolf or hell's highway?
Also, do you think market garden is good enough to wait for?
And final side question, can a German list from a book about the eastern front play against an american list? Automatically Appended Next Post: I have also been looking at devil charge, is that and good?

Personally grey wolf and the newarket garden German books will have more (and better) lists.
As for which lists can play which, all late war lists will have a decent chance vs all other late war lists, but Sometimes it can be rock>scissors>paper>lizard>Spock
As for devils charge, I don't think it's a good beginners book/list as KG peiper list is not straight forward

The compilation books have a healthy dose of infantry (FJs, Grenadier, SS, etc...) and tank (Panzer, StuG, Schwere) lists. I think Grey Wolf is the way to go, but the Market Garden combined book, Bridge to Bridge, will have some solid infantry and armoured lists.
The great thing about making a list from the either book is that nine times out of ten it will be 3/4 compatiable with a list from the other book. And that is the great thing about Flames of War. Design and buy and army, if it's not suitable to your playstyle, then try out another list with the same composition. I personally love it.

When does bridge by bridge/market garden come out?
And why is Grey Wolf $75 and Hell's Highway is only $30?

Hell's Highway is a small, softcover book covering about three allied lists and two to three German lists. Cannot remember exact numbers.
Grey Wolf, and yes, Earth & Steel are hardcover compilations that are German and or German & Axis powers only and have a large number of lists in them.
And where the hell are you paying $75.00 for Grey Wolf at???
@Col. Krazy Kenny - Earth & Steel is not outdated, I use both GW and E&S to cover off my Schwere lists for both fronts.

I'm in a similar position. I'm planning on using the Grenadierkompanie list from Grey Wolf. You can have as many as 5 StuG's as the Panzer Platoon and then you can add 3 more in a StuG Platoon.
When assembling the plastic StuG's... I've glued Rare Earth Magnets inside, so that I can mount Assault Rifle Tank Escorts when I want them or not.

I usually play at 1750pts, but you could bump that list up or down. That'll depend on what size game you plan to play. I personally would look at adding in some some form of arty/ smoke template producer to that list. And possibly some AAA, the FJ being able to take some static AAA units.

Not many, only a handful just to learn how to play. I would like units that do not take fines to use effectively. Some simple, solid choices would be great.

Usually a solid choice for every German grenadier list seems to be a HMG platoon to help pin enemy platoons and fire against assaults.
You already have Pak 40's from the Open Fire set, so that takes care of the anti-tank.
Smoke is probably your next biggest concern. Some Mortar platoons to smoke screen and provide some light artillery support would be a good investment, or maybe some Nebelwerfers. Artillery doesn't seem to be that big a game breaker for Germans so I think more people take them for smoke screens rather than actual bombardments. Although being able to direct fire a tank to bits is always fun. The specific units would depend on your lists.
AA would depend on your meta.
So the best bet would probably be a platoon of HMG and a platoon of mortars and/or heavy mortars.

One thing that confuses me is the sheer number of choices. what is the difference between th 14 different mortar platoons on these 4 pages? http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=79&CategoryID=7806&PageIndex=1

Period of the war (E/M/L), heavy/light mortars, and specific army. For your standard grenadiers you would probably look at the following selection from those pages:
Heavy Mortars: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=117&ProductID=2827
Regular Mortars: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=117&ProductID=3326
Heavy Machine Guns: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=117&ProductID=2936
The other 4 pages of options are different weapons and uniforms for the different time periods of the war, and different uniforms between stuff like the SS, the Gebirbsjagers, Fallschirmjagers, and winter uniforms.

So if I buy a grenadier HMG platoon I cannot use the models in a fallschirmjager list? Do they really look that different

Fallschirmjagers are probably one of the biggest differences in models. Different uniforms and different helmets that stand out quite a bit. Not sure how big the difference is between SS troops and grenadiers.
Gebirgsjagers have different uniforms than grenadiers as well, but I have been able to sneak some open fire models into my squads by painting them the same.

Grenadiers can be solid with good support. You should have several options with where you are going from here though:
1) Grenadiers: Any of the grenadier lists are viable and can be fun. The Grey Wolf list would even let you take the Shermans in the form of a Looted Panzer Platoon. You should also be able to use them as Grenadiers from any of the Late War books or lists. A couple platoons of infantry, some mortars, some Pak40s and some HMGs are a solid core and you can tweak the support options from many different lists. So you could buy different tanks and support platoons to expand after you get your core of Grenadiers. If you are interested in Fallschirmjagers you could buy a platoon of them and run them as a divisional support option.
2) Tank companies: Different tank company lists let you use Grenadiers are support infantry. So you wouldn't really need to buy anymore infantry and would focus on buying different tanks instead. The Panzerjaeger Company in Grey Wolf would let you use 2 platoons of Grenadiers and 3 Pak 40s for 465 points, so you would just have to buy some Hetzers to expand from there.
Open Fire gives you some decent options to expand from.

SS Gebirsjager and normal Grenadiers all look similar enough you can mix them and only the most astute war geek is going to notice. Fallschirmjager however have the different helmets which stands out a lot.

Or Panzergrenadiers or one of the special lists like Sperrverband or Sturmkompanie. In Grey Wolf its only Fallschrimjaeger than need their own distinct infantry models (and luftwaffe gun crews).
The basic Grenadier list works quite well though and its a good start that will allow you to branch out into just about any list quite easily. Solid choices for German infantry are mortars, heavy mortars and/or Nebelwerfers, HMGs and PaK40s, this will give you a good base to expand on with some armour or tank destroyers or what ever you want really. Most infantry lists tend to run 3 infantry platoons, with grenadiers its usually 2 grenadier platoons and a white pioneer platoon.
