We should really have tags for collapsible sections, similar to the spoiler tags. The reason why we should have them in addition to the spoiler tags is because we heavily use the collapsibility of them, at the expense of abusing them. Spoiler tags are for spoilers, and imply something that should not be read by certain people. When users are over using them for things like hiding large images or NSFW content, they lose their significance as hiding spoilers. We could end up with people opening spoilers when they don't want to because they assume that the spoiler sections aren't what they're for because they're so over used for other stuff.

I don't think it's that much of a problem...
If people are talking about spoilers they usually tell you and put it into tags as well...

Agreed, the only times ive seen the Spoiler tags used for something other than a spoiler it has always been explicitely stated what is contained within the tags...
Although i can see exactly where you are coming from Ehrenstein, and agree in part, the fact that people are stating what is contained means having seperate headers becomes a moot point...

Either way, it's still inappropriate to be using spoiler tags for no spoilers, and is just going to result in people bending the rules. If people start using spoiler tags for non spoilers, it's just going to promote the idea that they can use other things in ways that they aren't supposed to be used.

And new users will learn from the actions of the users they interact with. Spoilers are great for several reasons, I don't have to fill up a post with image after image after image, forcing people to sit through gakky images until they reach the meat of my stuff. It helps with page load times, since it doesn't immediately need to load the images of videos contained within.
Also, what sort of examples can you give of people on this site using other things in ways they shouldn't be used?

Agreed Alf, new users learn from established users, and if established users are labelling their spoilered content to inform you of what is there ('lots of pics hidden for ease' for example) then what arent the new users going to know?

Inappropriate? seems like an odd use of the word...
Its not a rule to post spoilered information in spoilers, or to not put anything else in spoilers AFAIK, so no rules were bent or are being bent if people use spoiler tags to hide images/NSFW content etc. its just not technically 'spoilers'....

I missed the section of the Dakka rules that talk about the use of spoiler tags.
New folks will learn behaviors by watching the old guard, and they will pick up the unwritten rules fast enough.

Yeah, like the unwritten rule to always, and I mean always blame the victim.

The images and videos always load regardless of whether they're displayed. In collapsible sections like that, they load uncollapsed when the page first loads. It's not a rule that only spoilers can go in spoiler sections, but it's intuitive that it might be to anyone who hasn't learned that yet, and it might look to them like the rules aren't being enforced if general content is going in sections that say they are for spoilers.

You still haven't provided examples of how we can bend the rules and slowly force things into anarchy here on dakka.
Spoiler tags are, if anything, mislabeled. They should simply be hidden tags. They make things hidden ta-da... Solves your issues with the mechanic without adding needless work to Lego's queue of issues.

Renaming would also work, and they'd still be able to be used for the original purpose.

The admins could just change the name, if that would be better.

I really like using spoiler tags when, in someone else's thread, I did something similar, different, or otherwise want to show something I did without distracting from their work in their thread. I don't think I'm abusing the tag when I use it.

You are adding to the problem of lawlessness in this community, you criminal!
Also IE, I don't think lego is going to change the spoiler tag because a single user things the name should be changed.
