I just finished playing a game of "drunk hammer" ie a game of warhammer while imbuing alcohol. A friend of mine told me 40k was originally a "beer and pretzel game" and said it would be infiniatley more fun with alcohol involved. I had my reservations but 12 beers and a fifth of vodka later I believe I was wrong. Instead crunching math hammer or over thinking moves I just had fun, alot of fun, pretty sure mistakes were made on both sides but who cares. Question have you ever played beer hammer before? Have you ever played under the influence and how was it?
ps. sorry for any and all misspelling because im writing this while still thoroughly inebriated.

I wouldn't, because I don't drink, but the spirit of a lighthearted game is what draws me back. Don't take it too seriously and you win every time. That, and play Orks.

Not really thrilled by the idea of "drunkhammer" - I get bored and tired very easily while drunk, so a game of 40k would probably send me to sleep.
Kicking back with a rum or three and some cold pizza while moving models around is much more my style. Not enough to get me drunk, but enough to make everything more relaxed and fun (not to mention funny!).
Never considered "shroomhammer", either; illicit substances aren't my cup of tea.

Agreed that with a few light-hearted drinks a game like this can be a lot of fun, the problem is when you get a super-competitive guy who just gets worse under the influence, and then starts trying to pick a fight over every rule dispute rather than just letting the game be fun.
Also, when quite drunk, the precious minis tend to get damaged quite a bit, and cleaning up afterwards just doesn't happen. I have come into my kitchen, minis strewn all over the floor and one of my mates still passed out on the sofa - remember to drink responsibly kids!

Sometimes it's fun to be the bad guy for a change. That's why I play Grey Knights. |

Having a game over a few beers, fine. Totally plastered, not so much. Besides the problems of moving delicate minis around under the influence, you have the problem of different kinds of drunks. I classify myself as a "sleepy drunk" There are angry drunks, or people who argue more after a few beers. Not the kind of people you would want to play a competitive game with.
And then there is the problem when the arbites show up and impound your land raider for tank-shocking under the influence.

I don't drink so I can't really answer, but I can see how Warhammer would be a lot of fun when you're a bit tipsy. When I play with my friends, we usually mess around and make bs calls or say stupid stuff and try to mess with each other.
"No, you can't do that. Your unit is clearly pinned." "What? Since when?" "Since that model fell over and started taking a nap, of course!"
Not as fun as Drunkhammer, I'm sure, but I like it.

Ive only ever played drunk teaching friends. And I can tell theyre getting bored of me looking through the book and explaining everything, so by the time we hit the assault phase its all over.
Playing with somebody who knows their stuff would be a lot more interesting.

I usually have a couple of beers and finger or two of scotch. When I play 40k I take the beer and pretzels nature very seriously.
Played drunk once (all of us in fact) and it was a hoot, but not the way I would tend to do it. If only one or two of us were drunk then it probably wouldn't have been half as fun.
But a game without at least one beer is a travesty!

Well I agree with a few of the above posters, moderation is probably key. Last night was fun but only because everyone held their liquor well. And to echo an another poster, drink resposibly. Also hangovers aren't fun.

If you're having a few beers whilst playing I can recommend Apocalypse games as better than normal 40k, given that you'll probably have more players around the table and Apoc is fundementally a bit silly anyway
I'd also agree 40K is much more fun if you approach it as a 'beer and pretzels' game (regardless of whether you drink or not) rather than a hard core strategy game which personally I don't think it's very well designed as.

I have played a few games where we've all got progressively more drunk. The results were quite hilarious. I was relatively sober so my win ratio suddenly increased as people were making hilariously stupid mistakes. I play with a very easy going crowd who view the whole thing as a laugh anyway.

I used to play it quite regularly, but I don't enjoy it as much. Warhammer is just too serious and tactical to drink when playing. I drink when playing more 'human' orientated games like Battlestar Galatica. I think you get much more out of warhammer when you can think clearly and implement the most effective plan of battle.

40k Is serious and tactical if you let it become so, by becoming another game altogether!
I have played drunk, Bloodbowl was a go to game for tabletop drunken escapades, but that become serious business so 40k became a staple of table flipping, model crushing, beer spilling and general insanity. Dice were swallowed to prevent results being seen, nurglings spawned from ass cracks. new off table artillery strikes were improvised by throwing pizza slices onto the board....

Playing 40k whilst drunk is fun if you're new to drinking.
These days I prefer a cup of tea whilst I'm playing. Although I do occasionally enjoy the advantage of playing my friends while they're drunk.
A long time ago when we were all in our early 20s we played a 2v2 game after we had taken some magic mushrooms (sorry not sure if discussion of narcotics is allowed on Dakka). And it was the longest game of 40k probably in the history of 40k.
Perhaps its because I drive for a living that I hardly drink these days. I prefer to unwind with a cup of tea and a smoke.
