Subject: Can a flyer move vertically?

Could a flyer go up as a Move action (vertically or diagonally), for example to
- get out of shooting range
- get over a big obstacle, such as a tall building.
- make a piqué in the next turn (and leave its back unexposed)
The rules don't seem to raise that question.
This could be done physically by putting blocs under the base to level it up.
This can become a tactical issue in a 3D environment with multiple level buildings, especially during Apocalypse games.
Thanks!

No, unless you have an 18" or taller building that the flyer can end its move on top of. The Flyer can't just be held in the air.

No. You aren't allowed to modify it's base once the game starts, and that would include stuffing a pile of bricks under it to make it taller. The base has to be on the table.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the precision.
Yet as far as "flyers" go, it doesn't make much sense... The sentence "The Flyer can't just be held in the air", which is true but somehow it feels quite weird, speaks for itself. In the grimdark future, the Mechanicum forgot how to build planes that can also move up or down...
In fact, it seems that playing with several 3D buildings, such as a cityfight amongst skyscrappers, isn't much in GW's "paradigm" of play... Too bad it happens to be that "vertical" is my favourite way of playing by far, as it forces a perspective far different from fantasy warfare... something that I used to use a lot in AT-43 with flyers. :-/

Being high in the air is represented by flyers only getting hit on 6s and unable to be assaulted.

This.
It is an abstraction... They are all over the place and the model represents their presence on the field but is not an exact representation of height.
If jet planes really went as slow as fast vehicles, they would literally fall out of the sky.

Yet grenades can still be thrown at them and abilities with short ranges can still hit them. If they truly were high in the air then GW should have put a limitation that weapons have to have XX amount of range to even choose to target a flyer. *Shrug*

Except both the flier and the shooting unit are dynamic rather than static models. The shooting unit may be mcguivering some clever rockets from grenades for all we know.

Thats the price of an abstract rules set. So unless GW clarifies that Grenades can't be thrown against Zooming Flyers we'll just have to live with it.

Well at least some flyer rules, and simple ones by that, are preferable to none. I won't argue with that.

While you cannot end your move with your base in thin air, you are given a blanket allowance to go over intervening terrain during your move. So, you can totally move a flyer over a building, no problem.
