Scary if in the hands of some crazy person. However it sounds pretty cool. It sounds like it takes out all the hard parts of sniping. Dunno what military snipers would think of this.

What? I'm just saying an average every-man is able to use this device and hit a target and it makes it much simpler.

*snicker* having this many thousand dollar scope makes you a sniper the way owning a john deer hat makes you a farmer. All it does is remove the mental math that any basic marksman needs to do to fire a rifle at range properly.
With out decent fundamentals you're screwed everywhere but a range with fixed non-moving targets.
So no, this wouldn't be scary in the hands of a crazy person. Because unless they're menacing steel plates on a range, they don't have the skill level to make use of it in an active environment.
It's also worth noting that the sniper himself is the weapons system, the weapon he's holding is almost inconsequential.

It's just weird that's the first place your mind went, when faced with a $17,000 rifle. I mean, nothing stopping that crazy person from going to Walmart NOW, picking up a shotgun for $200, and just going wild with it.
It's like, when viewing a Ferrari, do you first think, man, I hope no one drives drunk in it?

Meh well any tool can be used for good or ill i suppose. I might find it hard to make a dull spoon used for ill but some people have sick minds (i don't mean spoons on noses).
Hard not to think my mind would go there given recent 'events'. Probably bad to make it possible for that argument to start but you know it would've anyway. Also at the end of the article they mention 'the gun debate' or similar.
I only said it takes the guess work out of this and the title i put on this was the title that was on the site i took it from. I just figure it's many times easier and usually less complicated to take the title from the article and put it as the title of the thread.

Hypothetical rich crazy guy can shoot poor people and cover it up to blow off steam and we'd never hear about it.

I'm not sure where the "reply is a misunderstanding of what I said" and "the internet has lots of sarcasm scales" are I was saying that the guy could practice with the fancy gun and get good with it in response to the one poster assuming he would just purchase it and never attempt to learn anything about guns first.

It does seem to only work on non-moving targets. However it still sounds very helpful and honestly if any gun company wants people to buy said gun then they'll try making the equipment as efficient at shooting the targets as possible moving or not. I don't really care either way right now on the gun debate. I saw this and thought it was cool so i posted it. The article was written by that dude on NBC not me. I claim to know nothing of it's capabilities or anything. It only really seems to take all the guess work and calculations out of the sniping.

In any event, I suspect this would be handy for training sharpshooters - the scope also outputs to a ipad, which would be pretty hand for a spotter I imagine.

Actually, that's a fair point. How many of the spree killers have had access to $17,000 to spend on fun stuff like this rifle?
I think that guy who flew the plane into the tax building probably had access to that kind of money, but that's the only one I can think of.

Well, in that case, I think it's simply people not being aware that
1.) Automatic weapons are super hard to legally buy and that they cost as much as a low-end mortgage, or
2.) Thinking you can convert to full-auto in your garage

Even with a Class III license it's insanely illegal to convert a weapon to full auto.
People have gotten 10+ years in federal prison for /talking/ about it. Conspiracy to violate federal firearms laws. Automatically Appended Next Post: If you have a Class III manufacture's permit you can do it, but at that point you make machineguns already, so why would you bother converting?

Sure, that and the stupidity of the 'shoots more bullets = more killy' line of thinking you get from most of the anti-gun types. Those weapons are used in the military because suppression is a really important thing when the other side has guns as well. But when you just want to slaughter a bunch of unarmed innocents, then an accurate semi-auto with a decent rate of fire will do the job much better.
And then there's the whole 'if it's black metal finish it's military and therefore bad, if it's got a wood finish then it's for hunting and must be okay'.
Honestly, every time I read the stuff the anti-gun lobby puts out I become pro-gun. Of course then I read the NRA stuff...
