hey, im in the beginning movements of a 40k fan film based out of Canada (we wont get hit with the copyright issue that prevented Damnatus)

im just posting the FB page and trying to generate some Buzz, we will be creating a crowd-funding page in a few weeks,

Please support us on our FB page

http://www.facebook.com/Warhammer40000ShortFilmProject?notif_t=page_new_likes

we are a group of filmmakers and artists aiming at bringing a 40k short film to life this summer. through a intensive crowd funding campaign we intend to bring 40k to the major audience. Our copyright laws in the country of filming allow for GW to retain copyright so we dont run into the damnatus problems. We intend to use a variable funding campaign to fund one of 4 scripts each with a different budget needed, so whatever goal we do raise, WILL BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE.

Follow this page for constant updates and artwork.

As stated earlier, there are 4 scripts.

Each of the four scripts features a drastically different story, each being a bit more complex than the last.

$1500- if this goal is raised the short film will follow a imperial guard squad on a dense forest planet, as they hunt down the remnants of a Tau battle group. Featuring Guardsmen, Firewarriors, Gun drones, Sniper Drones and one heck of a fight. around 5 minutes in length.

$4000- If this goal is raised, we will be following a group of Guardsmen, including several soldiers and veterans, using lasguns, plasma guns, and power weapons, facing down a tau battle-group, chasing them right into the hands of a Khorne Cult. Containing cultists, fire warriors, Veterans, Drones, Guardsmen, and a full 10 minute short scene.

$10000- If this goal is reached then we will be creating a full 15 minute short film, with a rounded out story following a group of guardsmen who discover a khorne cult while hunting down tau. upon signalling the command, they receive reinforcements in the form of a renown group of local veterans, together they must figure out how to destroy the chaos threat with limited resources. When an Inquisitor shows up, their plans are turned on their heads.

$15000- If this goal is raised, a full 25-30 minute long short film will be made. Following a group of Guardsmen who discover a khorne cult while hunting the remnants of a tau confrontation. Given orders to defend a local supply post and radar antennae until the situation is analyzed the unit must defend the post against chaos until help can arrive. with aid from the remnants of a veteran squad and a Eccentric Inquisitor, they must fight to complete their mission. Featuring a inquisitor, a full retinue, veterans, guardsmen, death cult assassins, khorne cultists, mutants, tau, drones, and even a Dark Apostle.

Let me know what you think of it and let us know what youd like to see in future short films.

We are testing the field of marines with a single marine character to test a suit that replicates size and proportions without CGI or as little as possible., this film is VERY much a practical effects based film.

i assumed it would have been obvious but this is a fan film, no profit to be made, just making a short for the fans.

How does the whole getting money from anothers IP work in Canada?

Essentially making money of the 40k/Gw brand?

no money to be made in fan films mate, its litterally just a fan film, the money being used is to make a movie. Damnatus got screwed by an obscure copyright law that meant if they released it. Gw would lose rights to their IP. Difference being if we make the fan film up here, we can release it without having to deal with that.

regardless there is no money to be or being made in this project. this is a fan film, made by and for fans. no money, i know GW far too well to even try that. who knows perhaps a successful short film will prompt GW to not be so opposed to a real film.

No worries, just wondered since you were looking at crowd funding , which could be viewed as I said above.

Hope the film is not going to be all SM or inquisition.

I can only assume that this means that you haven't seen what happened to the other fan made 40k films.

If GW has managed to crush them and bury them under the rug, you should take that as an indicator of future events.

I think this is doomed to getting a letter from GW's IP lawyers.

I agree, GW wont give a monkeys that you aren't aiming to make a profit only that you are using the IP without THEM making a profit.
Im afraid the Big Bad Laywers will be along to demand C+D to your your brave efforts soon enough.

I cant comment on whether GW can legally shut this down as I'm not nearly smart enough for that conversation...but what I can say is you get to be free and clear of GW up till the point where you arent. The "this is a fan film so not for profit" defense works up till the point you get a letter from GW telling you that you cant do this. Then at that point you get to decide if your not for profit film is worth spending money on legal action....GW doesnt seem to care if they can legally tell you to stop, doesnt cost them much to send you a C&D. That all being said, best of luck...hope you get to make your film and that it sees the light of day, but if the worst happens and you get a letter from GW i doubt it would come as a shock

not to beat the legal deadhorse...but lets say you get a crap ton of money to make your film...then GW shuts you down...what happens with the money? While I understand the spirit of the whole crowdfunding is to help get a project off the ground, I for one would hesitate a bit to chip in on a project that could get shut down, though I guess a lot would depend on the pledge levels, much easier to throw a smaller amount at it without worrying

in the event of GW shutting it down before production, the funds donated will be refunded. As per indigogo policy. We know GW has given Permission to "Inquisitor" and has not shut down the Dark angels short film, all i know about that one is they are using a large MMA fighter as a marine.
