Well I have been playing planetside 2 recently. It is a free massive multilplayer online game it is amazing. This is the sort of game that makes console players sell them and buy pc. But what makes it so good? Why couldn't relic do a similar thing with Space marine (on the pc only, the Xbox/ps3 wouldn't cope with it)? Just imagine the epicness...

Space Marine is a singleplayer game with an added multiplayer component. Planetside was designed from the ground up to be all about multiplayer. It is a matter of resources and investment.
Also, a 40k game like Planetside would have likely focused on the Imperial Guard rather than Space Marines, which would be a break from the singleplayer campaign.
Not saying that a game like that would not be cool, mind you. It only needs to have this focus from the start.

Yeah I agree but I think they could factor in many races, they could create a potentially MASSIVE game which would be a joy to play and be very cost effective.

planetside has some current issues, primarily being a bit too much spawn camping and vehicle kill whoring, but yeah, it has moments where you wish you could reskin it as 40k and have a black crusade sweeping a planet.
but yeah, its pretty great, when/if they fix the cert farmers who have no desire to actually take ground/bases and just want to sit in magriders outside spawn points for hours on end, it will return to beta levels of great

Part of the appeal is the fact that there's only three empires. With much more than that, you'd just end up with each map being a fragmented mess, not to mention how much of it would be dominated by unconquerable warp gates. That, and I dread the thought of a four (or more) way battle.

Well making 40k to massive game like Planetside would make the game chaotic and messy whit all the factions and sides involved in it.
Besides Space marines is supposed to portray the fact that the Marines are well always outnumbered and fights in smaller groups rather than the huge ones you see in Planetside.
Even though it might be a good thought, i'm not sure the end result would be that good.

I wouldn't know; Planetside 2 is still unplayable. So... no. I'm glad Space Marine wasn't like Planetside 2.

I'm very glad space marine wasn't made like planet side 2 because, well, the game sucks. Vehicle controls are god awful, boring combat, the before mentioned spawn killing, Not nearly enough emphasis on objectives, etc etc.
If space marine was anything like planetside I would have been enraged over wasting my money on it.

Really it's my favourite game of the year. I really hated space marine it was so boring and linear. The only fun thing was exsterminatus.

In comparison, I rather liked it. Space Marine actually had some unique features going for it, and had a flow of combat that generally worked for it. Exterminatus was just the delicious icing on the cake. What could have made Space Marine better was better netcode at the start.

Because that isn't normal. You wouldn't find 100 Eldar in a massive brawl often. Or Space Marines. Or Dark Eldar. Or Daemons...

Yes, indeed. Which is actually why the game's current small matches make sense. You EXPECT Space Marine vs Space Marine battles to be tiny. But I'd love to see an Imperial Guard vs Orks sequel.

Planetside would work as 40k if it was Imperial Guard vs Blood Pact/Chaos Cultists vs say Nids. The equivalent of getting a Max would be spawning a single Marine or Tyranid Warrior.

You might not get a lot of Eldar, dark eldar or marines but you could at them in somehow. I think it would be cool to have a full scale tyranids or orks vs imperial guard or tau battle.

That would require a stratergy engine. No FPS will be able to handle that.
Also, no, in games such as Planetside, there is most definitely a bias towards hordes. You couldn't work in Eldar with any balance, to be honest.

Space Marine was one of my favorite games in a while.
It did an amazing job showing off the setting. It really felt like 40k to me. I also liked all the characters quite a bit.
I also enjoyed the combat because its the only game I own that is like it.
I also prefer a too linear game of a massive sandbox. I hate sandboxes.

I agree that the campaign was a work of art. Just exquisite, it captured exactly what 40k should be like. Multiplayer? Meh not so good. I mean I enjoyed it don't get me wrong got to level 41 unlocked every perk except for that dam vengence launcher one. But it was missing something, it was boring and similar. I would still be playing it now though if more people played dreadnought assault... I mean that was just insane I got 100 kills in one match!

I don't see anything "unique" about the game mechanics of Space Marine, but the campaign (playing it right now, as I just got it on Steam a few days ago) is certainly nice. I'm impressed by the visuals - the designers captured the "look and feel" of the setting very well.
I agree about multiplayer being "meh", but I suppose it's fun enough thanks to being 40k. It's interesting how the visual style of a franchise can make something better.
As for a Planetside-kinda-game with 40k as a setting ... it'd certainly be doable. Just limit the game to showcase a fraction of the setting instead of committing to show any and all armies, just like every other 40k game did so far.
You'd have Imperium, Orks, and Chaos. Eldar would be too weird as they don't lend themselves well to mass combat like this.
Class has to be picked upon spawn; you'd have a set of different, unique character types you can customise (within limits) and upgrade with unlockable gear. Space Marines could be balanced by adding a few sensible limitations that make them less of an all-rounder on the battlefield, such as not being able to operate stationary guns. Going with a "power level" from the tabletop or the Inquisitor RPG, their susceptibility to sustained focus fire and the bulk of their armour would go a long way to counteract their higher resilience against individual attacks.
I would also throw in bonuses based on vicinity to other players, so that people are rewarded for staying close to other soldiers that share a similar class, thus hopefully encouraging players to form squads of the same class rather than having stuff like a single Marine hanging around with a bunch of Guardsmen or vice versa.
We can dream.

Do you have the settings to high? Its been speculated often that ps2 causes the better pc's to lag because it has been made to have better graphics and such than they can run. Try turning them down a bit then it should run smoothly

Yes, I'm sure it does (and I don't give a gak). This is, however, irrelevant to the fact that Planetside 2 has a higher processor requirement than almost any other game out there at this point. Planetside 2's requirements are ridiculous for such a mediocre-looking game. Yes, even on its highest settings the game is merely mediocre.
