With some armies, you definitively focused on the former, but with others on the latter - it seems a bit ... random.
SoB I'd just explain as either "Codex Nuns with Guns", or, expanding on the description you already used "Codex T3 FeMarines with Miracles", respectively.
ya, he's gotten a read through of the basic rules book and split a dark vengenance set with someone else but doesn't really know what he wants to expand into yet as he's still figuring out what he likes. Indeed it is a bit random as some of this is highly colored by what my own play style is and the stuff I've seen though I don't play all the codexes so I'm hoping you guys would fill me in the parts I got wrong.
I'm mostly trying to stick to style but for some codexes, the style is mostly their rules so it kind of meshes together somewhere. For example,
BA can definately be played as a
FNP all Jump troop army but could equally be effective as a fast mech army with

GK razor spam or
DA razor spam (there are great amounts of differences in actual rules but I'm trying to be general so I'm kind of trying to find a happy place where at least it shows up somehow different to something that may on paper or on the board to appear grossly similar.)
