Ok folks, I havent played 40k since 3rd edition, so Im a bit rusty on how things stack up. Im going to be playing mostly against a Gk player new to 40k). Now I know that in 5th GK are very hard to counter, so Im looking for some advise. We are both going to be running terminator heavy lists. I know GK is going to be a hard fight, but Id like to give him a good run, maybe even win now and then.
Heres the unit I have at the moment:
Belial (SB & Sword)
Term squad SB & CF Sgt with PS
Term squad with LC
Tac squad (5 man) bolters & plasma gun
Tac squad (5 man) bolters & plasma gun
Any tips you all can give is appreciated.
Future plans include another Term squad, razorbacks for the tac squads, a Predator or two, and a Vindicator or two.

I was actually thinking of tacking a plasma cannon to the Term squads.
EDIT: Well, I cant do that in the 5th edition DA codex, flamer or Assault cannon only.

Don't play 5th. Thats my advice. Not only will it be confusing to a newbie that you are teaching him an old rule set, but it will be a great disservice.
It will be very tough to counter a GK army using 5th edition rules and the old DA codex, especially if running Deathwing. He'll roll all over you in combat, kill your terminators before they swing. Even more so if they don't have Stormshields, which your list doesn't have.

He doesnt know the 6th rules either, so 5th wont be confusing to him. Sadly, it does seem that moving to 6th is the answer for "balance"...though neither of us like what we have read of 6th so far...and dropping well over $100 on the rulebook and codex is really hard to swallow.

You can pick up the mini rulebook that comes in DV for around $20 online.
Codices are $50 but believe me thats not too expensive. The army is the most expensive investment. Then you just need a new codex every 2-3 years. If you can't afford a $50 investment every 2-3 years this may not be the hobby for you.
You will be glad you changed over.
Its no worse than any other edition switch, believe me that the 4th-5th switch was much harder. 6th edition is really a cakewalk.
Bite the bullet and just do it, it will save you heartache down to road if you ever find other people to play with that are playing the current edition. You don't want to be that guy thats stuck in the past.

Suppose thats what Ill end up doing. Not much point in playing if its a guarantee slaughter every time. However, knowing me, if I do 6th, Ill get the big rulebook. Ill hate paying for it, but oh well...I hear its a very nice book.

I agree. GK have better balance in 6th. They're a fun army to play against now.
Also, if you or your friend decided to go to a LGS or GW, you'll struggle to find a game with anyone if you only know 5th. Deal with it and learn it (psst, it's not that complicated).
As GT said, $20 mini rule book on ebay is awesome. Much better than the huge fat tome too. Heck, if you want to play DA, the Dark Vengeance box isn't a bad buy either, you can always swap or sell the chaos models.

SO Ill ask for another bit of advise. The GK guy is going to be running Mordrak & ghosts, sometimes Draigo, and is selling me that these guys are pretty much invincible...whats the word on that?

Complete BS.
Mordrak and Draigo are both subpar for the codex.
Mordrak is a HQ grandmaster that can purchase a retinue of Ghost Knights. Which are just regular GKTs without as many of the options. If Mordrak ever takes a wound, a new Ghost Knight appears in the unit. If Mordrak dies, all the Ghost Knights disappear.
The unit also Deep Strikes without scattering on turn 1. But they arn't scary because they can't take Psycannons.
