I'm currently looking for statistics regarding the total crime rate in the US. After looking through multiple US government websites, the closest I've gotten is the Census Bureau's "Crime and Crime Rates by Type of Offense" (http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0306.pdf) which only includes 7 types of crime. Is there a table of "all the crimes in the US" that actually includes ALL the crimes or is this mess the closest I'm gonna find?

As a side-note, I'm starting to see why you Americans don't like your government; this stuff's a mess!

Better-ish, but surely that's not all the crime in the US (for example, where's the economic crime?)? It's more or less the same figures that's in the Census report, except it's presented more awkwardly.

Are those even actually crimes? I don't think we actually send people to jail for that. Pretty sure the SEC just levies a fine that is a tiny percentage of the ill-gotten gains, a statement is issued that is a non-apology apology while admitting no wrongdoing, and then handshakes and cigars all around.

...I dunno honestly, UCR's pretty much the go to on any of that stuff. Email the FBI's help desk maybe?

I do find it interesting that according to the FBI's prelim findings for 2012 that the violent crime rate went up, but murder and forcible rape went down, with robbery and aggravated assault jumping slightly.

I don't know diddly but that sounds like our economy's definitely still in deep in the gakcan.

Unless they can nail you for fraud or whatever.

Honestly if we wanted to try people for economic crime of any kind half the US Federal government should be in the slammer.

I suspect you will find the problem is that the US has so many agencys with so many diffrent jurisdictions that finding the stats is going to be almost impossible. They have hundreds of the sodding things:

FBI
State police
County police
ATF
Fisheries and wildlife
Coast Guard
CBP
EPA
National Parks Authority

These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, and all of them have criminal investigation and crime prevention powers equivelent to what we would see as police powers in Europe, where as in Europe we have govenment departments who require the help of the police for allot of the enforcment when a criminal act has occoured.

The first thing to look up is the Uniform Crime Reporting categories. All recorded crime in the USA is classified according to these. The FBI publishes collated information for the whole country. They have a huge site and you may need to do a lot of searching to find the reports.

There may be categories of crime that aren't recorded. For instance, I have not been able to find information about violent crime except "aggravated assaults" which are violent crimes involving the use of weapons. I don't now if this is because my searches aren't good enough or because the FBI does not record those data.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Oh well, thanks for the help everyone, my quest goes on.

Still, it's a silly system. *grumble, grumble*

If you are looking for crime in a metropolitan area, I would look at the local law enforcement websites.

If you're looking for information on economic crimes why not try the regulator's site?
