Teras Cassidy of Geek Nation Tours joins us in the third chair!

We've all been playing Space Cadets, the unique starship command co-op game from Stronghold games, so we decided to give it a detailed review. Do a bunch of wacky mini-games come together and make a cohesive experience?

But first, it's a new year and it's time for all geeks to resolve to be even more geeky! What kinds of things are we going to try and get done in 2013?

All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:

- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- News
- Wish Upon a Game
- & More

Please let us know what you thought of the show!!

Hey guys, enjoying the episode.

One question: Craig, what was the audiobook you were listening to? I'm having a difficult time finding it.

Audiobook: Last Argument of Kings, Book III in The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

It's not your usual fantasy epic . . . about on a par with GRRM and the whole Game of Thrones phenomenon as far as very flawed characters, a high mortality rate among characters, etc.

But I found the ending to be right in keeping, in theme and spirit, with the rest of the series, and found it quite satisfying.

For more on our thoughts on that though, after you've read and/or listened to the books, check out our latest TLC

Far-stretching, endless Time
Brings forth all hidden things,
And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

Sorry, not that one. There was another one you mentioned. Some sci-fi thing. You said you found it easier to listen to than read due to timeline jumping.

I already got through all the First Law stuff. Looking forward to the TLC!

Edit: Never mind! Found it! S. Andrew Swann's Prophet.

Craig said more or less all there was to say about the Infinity nerd rage situation. People need to understand that kicking a gift horse in the mouth is not a good idea no matter how aggravated it makes you that it isn't the pony you wanted.

The tragic thing is that some one somewhere will be nerd raging about being told not to to nerd rage. "How dare he, he doesn't understand!"

I love Teras as a guest, on whatever podcast he shows up on (and I've heard him on a few). Firstly he's got an excellent accent, and secondly he's able to compartmentalise his work and hobby, so he'll talk about the tours for 5-10 minutes, which I don't begrudge, and then shut up about them and just talk gaming for the rest of the show. Other third chairs could learn something from him.

Why couldn't Matt Wilson get a drink from the vending machine?
Because he had No Quarters.

Sorry, I've fallen a bit behind, and just got through the TLC about conventions.

Russ mentioned Historicon as being in SE Pennsylvania. Well, as of last year they've actually moved to Fredricksburg, VA. They had outgrown the Lancaster Host, the resort that hosted Historicon. However, there are two smaller historical miniatures conventions that are still held in Lancaster (and I think they're run by the Historicon folks). "Cold Wars" is in the March timeframe (I think) and "Fall-In" is in the October timeframe (again, I think...).

I know August was spotlighted as the crazy season for cons...but I want to throw out one more. The World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) is held in Lancaster, PA every August. This is a little bit of a different con, in that it's a tournament style, so if you're looking to really compete in some games and find out how good you are, this is the con for you. However, they have a strong open gaming presence as well, and a game library with over a 1000 titles. Attendance is in the 1600 range, I believe. This is a long convention, officially a week in length, from Monday through Sunday, although they have a "pre-con" that starts previous Friday - so nearly 10 days of convention if you have the stamina (and vacation time)!

Lastly, for anyone that may read this in the mid-Atlantic area, "Prezcon" is held at the end of February every year in Charlottesville, VA. It's kind of a mini-WBC, run as tournaments, although again there's plenty of open gaming. Attendance is roughly 600 for the convention (held Wednesday - Sunday, although the "pre-con" starts on Monday).

Hi Guys, I'm only about 1 hour into episode 118, but it's great so far. Teras is a great Third Chair and it's always nice to have some variety as the guest host. I'm looking forward to the review of Space Cadets because I've been interested in that game for a while now. I was listening to the Achievements in Gaming section and I can't wait to hear more about Craig's Cowboys and Zombies game once the NDA's are lifted.

One thing that made my ears perk up was when Russ was talking about his New Year's Eve gaming. The brief story about Small World was really cool, and it's always great to hear about playing games with your children, but I think a game rule was played incorrectly.

In Smallworld, when you go into Decline with your active race, you don't pick your new race until the start of your NEXT turn. So, playing properly, Russ's daughter, who used a very sneaky technique to win the game, shouldn't have been allowed to do what she did. When you go into Decline, you flip your race over, collect any victory points you're entitled to, and that's it. It's not until the FOLLOWING turn that you pick your new active race. If you go into Decline on the last turn of the game, you never get to pick a new race as your Active race. As a result, Russ's daughter shouldn't have been able to get the victory points for choosing her new race, and the outcome of the game would have been different.

My friends and I had some confusion over that same exact rule and we had to go back to the rulebook again to make sure we were playing correctly.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the episode. Keep up the great work!

Great episode as usual. I had some medical issues this week, so it was really nice to have the show to listen to while not able to move much this past week.

Listening to episode 118 and came to the comment about gamers never die if they have unpainted figures. Here is the Dork Towers take on this:
