Hi All,

Over at www.thefieldsofblood.com a bunch of us are doing Pre Heresy armies in response to the release of the Horus Heresy Betrayal book. Like all tale of X gamers however, I'm sure a large number are doomed to fail and the safest way forward to ensure success is to only half hitch my wagon to that train

I initially kicked off with a test figure using a mini lying around from the old 5th edition starter set.

The intention was always to chuck this figure in the bin, so I figured why not use something I'm definitely never going to use again. Initial feedback was that it needed to get a lot darker, or a lot lighter. I wasn't keen to go darker, so I quickly threw up some lighter tones on a mini.

Initial feedback was pretty positive, so I figured I would forge ahead and finish painting it up as a bit of an idea of how it would look when it all comes together.

Overall comments were pretty positive. I was happy with the shade, so decided to use this mix! Then came a few weeks of waiting for forgeworld to arrive from god knows where :< Alas it took 4+ weeks, though late last week it finally showed up!

I quickly chucked together 10 of the tactical marines, and painted up 5 of them to see if it worked as an overall look. All up, I'm happy with it and am looking forward to forging ahead with an army from here!

I'm still undecided on the bases... I love how they've come through looking like caked earth, but feel like I should throw in something else. The few tufts of static grass i threw in all seemed.. wrong? I also think I may need to bring some of that dust up the bottom of their boots.

Perhaps the odd skull or fallen helmet will give the extra detail I'm after? Hmm, not sure.

First off, armour looks great! Really like the vedigris blue/green colour.

I think you should add some contrast into the bases. I would add some light grey on the rock edges, the same colour you have in your test mini base, to bring out a difference between the rock dust and the rusted metal.

I agree you can dust their boots up some but doesn't need to be too much as your rust effects make them look grimy already.

Anyway looking forward to see this project evolve =)

Better get off my ass then, time for the second half of the squad... here we go again!

As for what I paint next, I'm thinking definitely a squad of terminators, and either:

one of these:

one of these:

or one of these massive beasts:

Any preference? I think I'll wind up adding all 3, but in terms of preference, I cant pick which to do first! I'll probably chuck the next forgeworld order through this weekend.

It's basically each of the 2 new green based turquoise paints, and then mixed up through bone. I'll grab a pic of my pallet-book tomorrow (basically a notebook I keep for armies of any colour mix I use so I can come back to the army later and add new units) so you can see the mix

Also, I have an update! I managed to finish a squad in time for our 31/01/13 deadline, but cut it very fine! I finally got around to snapping some photos and chucking them up on my FTP.

After some advice from various places, I've added a small amount of dust up the boots, and some static grass tufts to break up the basing somewhat. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it's come out.

Also, the Storm Eagle was by far and away the clear winner, so next up on the painting table are some cataphractii termies and a big fat Storm Eagle

I love heresy armies and you, my dear sir, are off to one hell of a start!

Is it true that a heresy army would be cheaper than a regular army for you?

The boy, I say, the boy is as sharp as a sack of wet mice...

If we were to buy from a local GW rather than either sourcing from the US or friends in Europe to circumvent the ROW for us, it would be fairly close unfortunately :(

Gah, I could have sworn I'd commented on this thread already but apparently I haven't.

I love what you're doing with these Sons. The ForgeWorld pre-Heresy armour looks great, I'm really interested in seeing what you do with the cataphractii too.
