While I'm not quitting 40k, I've finally gotten a fully painted Space Wolves army up to 2000+ points and enough Space Marine DIY Chapter stuff to paint for a while. So I figure that now is the perfect time to jump into a new game!
Now, here's what I am/am not looking for:
- I don't want models that feel toy-ish, or are pre-built. This puts Dust right out unfortunately.
- Nothing board game or rpg-ish.
- Nothing more expensive than GW games (I'm certain it's possible somewhere...)
- I want a full game - nothing that is only a ruleset without models or vice-versa.
- I don't want a game that has little or no focus on the hobby aspect.
- Nothing too far above 28mm as far as size goes. Inquisitor-scale models are too big, for example.
Other than that, I'm pretty much open to anything! Historicals, science fiction, fantasy, etc, any model size, skirmish or large-scale, anything works! Recommend me your favorites with a little bit of detail and I'll check it out! I could just use google-fu for this of course, but I prefer asking a community I've been with for a while where I can ask questions about specifics.
Thanks everyone!

Warmachine/Hordes. large skirmish scale game. best "sell" is the tactical nature of the gameplay, great models and background, and extremely tight, well written words, and excellent balance. probably your most likely alternative with a sizeable playerbase. it scales well, so you dont need to invest a huge amount to get stomping.
Malifaux. skirmish/warband scale game.
Infinity. skimrish game. Excellent models, brilliant rules. "Its not your list. Its you" sums it up. Its full of angry scots, power armour, aliens, mecha, laying mines, hacking, supressing fire, impersonation, and giant werewolves! awesome game.
Flames of War. World War 2 company level game. it uses smaller models than 40k, but that doesnt stop it having great rules and immersive battles.
Dystopian Wars. Steampunk wargame involving air, ground and sea units. bizarre, but strangely appealing. Here, its exploding in poularity. i guess i'll have to get some Prussians!
Firestorm Armada. Spaceship combat. Dystopian Wars... in Spaaaace. Quite well received.
Dropzone Commander. new on the scene, but generating a lot of buzz.
Anima Tactics, Bushido Wars, etc are all options too.
there are plenty wargames out therre.

Id definitely recommend Infinity. Malifaux is also a good choice as is warmachines and flames of war.
Also I wouldn't cut off dust as a possibility. The ruleset is very good and solid so the gameplay is amazing. Have you seen the models in person? I thought the same thing, that they would not be detailed and would be flimsy but I was very impressed once I saw them in person. Once you get a good paintjob on them they look great.

Here's the Infinity section of Dakka which may be useful to you if you want to ask some questions about the game.

I can keep going here......
We haven't even touched free rules sets, yet.
Basicly, what you need to do is to go on the web and google some games. FRP Games is a good place, then you can search games companies.
A few examples from people who post here on dakka, just for a plugity plug plug.
Crooked Dice
On The Lamb
Freebooters Fate
Black Scorpion
Mantic
and then even branch out to terraign makers, as well.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

No problem. Do drop by in our Infinity section of the forum if you need any clarifications or help with choosing your first faction. In Infinity, in general, you can safely go and choose whichever faction appeals to you visually the most
