The problems were more with the training tanks being stationary while the tanks in combat were mobile (and so the dogs would rather sensibly wait for the 35 ton machine to stop moving before they ran under it), and the noise of battle scaring the dogs into running back into their own lines, causing some number of casualties. But despite that the dogs were an effective, if uncommon weapon of war. They were only phased out when the Russian army improved enough that conventional AT weapons were much more common, rendering the dogs unecessary. Read the thread please.

Oh for feth's sake. I've corrected this three fething times. fething read the thread, and fething learn something.
This idea that the dogs ran back and blew up their own tanks is a total myth. It's a thing that isn't true. Dogs did in some instances flee back to their own lines, with bombs being triggered when they jumped into Russian infantry positions. After that the Russians shock any dogs retreating back to their lines.

I never got why people think that's a crazy idea...
The material they suggested they use was harder than concrete...

If I recall correctly the trouble wasn't so much feasibility as the sheer amount of resources, which could be used to build several standard carriers in a shorter time frame, and possibly because the Atlantic theatre was beginning to look more favourable for the Allies.
It would have been amazing if they'd pulled it off though. I think the illustrations are from a fictional novel based on the project, but if those images are anything to go by then that thing would pose a severe risk to an entire fleet!

I bet we could build one now for pretty cheap. If there is ever a war for the antarctic/arctic and someone doesn't build this then I am going to be very upset.

A big floating ice island is just kind of inherently outlandish. It just sounds bonkers, even if there was really good science, and a genuine strategic role for the thing.
And RossDas has the right of it, by the time they had the idea properly tested the war in the Atlantic was largely won, through boring, mundane stuff like more escort carriers and longer range planes.

Ice carriers would seem to be a thing of limited returns as well, how long does it take for an iceburg to melt in regular atlantic conditions? Also, I'm not sure if they could actually add to the superstructure, leaving it with relatively short service life in comparison to conventional carriers.
Personally, the coolest weapon I've ever read about is the Weaponized Orion Space craft. Too bad Kennedy killed it, that is one project I would love to see take off again. (Though I don't mind if it's weaponized or not.)

Also, I'm not sure if they could actually add to the superstructure, leaving it with relatively short service life in comparison to conventional carriers. The idea wasn't to build a direct replacement for conventional carriers, but was a big, lumbering stop gap measure that would deliver a strategic goal for long enough. That was one of the more interesting elements of WWII design, there were these massive, ambitious plans that were all at once built with enough redundancy so they would not fail, but at the same built without any durability because they would only be needed for a short while. Mulberry Harbour is a great example - the artificial harbour built to support the troops in Normandy until a real port could be taken. The thing was a massive undertaking, half a million tons of concrete, and only expected to last 3 months before the roadways were worn down by the sea. A heavy storm took one out in days, and the other surprisingly lasted 8 months. Another example is Russian tank building. The Soviets were criticised by the Nazis and their allies for the rough and ready nature of their tank design (drivers in KV tanks frequently used a hammer to change gears), but the Soviet response was that the tanks rarely lasted a year before being destroyed in combat, so why spent the time refining the parts so that they last longer than that? And the material suggested wasn't ice, but a mixture of ice and wood pulp that takes much longer to melt (the prototype lasted through 3 summers before fully melting).

There was also this thing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1500_Monster Honestly, part of me wishes that ww2 could have continued so we could have seen if the Nazi's mad scientist program could have been brought to fruition.

The material they were going to use wasn't just ice. It apparently lasts for a long time in even summer conditions.
