Let me guess. You listen to metal because you're different and won't be tied down by trends.

I listen to metal purely because I enjoy it (big fething surprise!). Some people listen to it because it's different or something. But if someone likes the music, then they can pay whatever the hell they want. No kind of music is better than an other, it's only different. Death Metal ain't better than Folk music, Folk music ain't better than Death Metal. Rap isn't better than hair metal, hair metal isn't better than rap. What is better/worse is the artists that produce the music. In the right hands, dance-club-pop music can be very fun, but at the moment the radio stuff isn't. It can definitely be argued that Death is miles better than Nicki Minaj.

When you go to a pop show, your not expecting to see fantastic live music. You're not expecting to see Planxty or Rory Gallagher or Primordial. You're expecting to see a lot of dancing and your favourite tunes on the radio. It's totally appropriate to lip sync as a pop star. What bothers me, however, is when I heard that Dave Mustaine lip synced. That's not what you expect from a Megadeth show.

Nothing is wrong with it I enjoy it. But its the definition of trendy. People who decide they want to get into metal or anything hardcore really are buying into an image same as any other genre. Metalheads just normally don't like to admit it. They like to gather with friends that think, dress, and act the same as them and consider themselves abnormal. Ever notice how everyone at a show looks more or less the same? Of course its a trend, not that thats a bad thing.

Not many people pick up a Death Metal album for the first time and say "wow this is really deep and well thought out music."

I mean I like metal, but its just as pretentious as hip hop.

Well no, but I listen to a lot of metal. I've just listened to the new Wintersun album. I own several Eluveitie, Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Death, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Candlemass and other assorted metal records. I'm a skinny teenager who has short hair who wears boardshorts and Adidas tops. I'm hardly buying into the "Metal" image at all.

edit: It depends on the Death Metal in question. Cannibal Corspe? HAHAHAHHAA no. Death? Probably not. Wintersun or Dark Tranquility? You may be surprised.

You're really going to tell me there's no image associated with metal? Please explain how companies like Hot Topic have stayed in business then. Anecdotal evidence of yourself does not make it true for everyone.

None of the metalheads that I know are stereotypical metalheads. It could be the culture of the country, it may not be.

There's definitely an image associated with the genre. It's hard no to notice it, every band (except probably Burzum) seems to demonstrate it. But I don't think that it's definitive and many metalheads look like that, especially when you look at all the wiggas or wigga-wannabees.

But Hot Topic doesn't exactly seem that metal to me. I don't know, I've never been. But what i've heard of it is that it's a goth/scene haven.

Goth/scene/metal/punk/hardcore, to a teenager shopping at these stores its one in the same. I mean the crowds are very interchangeable in appearance and tend to travel between genres anyway.

I'd love to hear your explanation on the "metalhead" and "wigga" difference. It's almost as if you think all white rap fans dress like they want to be black.

I wouldn't call this similar:

(the ex-lead singer of Gorgoroth)
to this:

(the band Attack Attack!)

But I suppose it depends on the exact style of music. Though even then, Chuckie S didn't look scene. Nor does Corspegrinder.

Ok, so with metal, I find it's generally either Europeans or nerdy kids who listen to the stuff I like. If you're a European, you're going to to be very into your corpsepaint and tats and stuff but as a nerdy kid you're not.

A hip hop kid (who solely listens to hip hop) is not going to be anything similar at all. It's listened to by all walks of young life. Generally, these kids dress with the caps and the like.

If I walk into my school on a non-uniform day I can count the number of metalheads on no hands, even though I know people who like metal and only listen to metal. I can't count the number of wiggas/iggas/whatever-s - there are so many of them!

Ooooh he's so scary, maybe he worships Satan! So edgy and different!

Image. Image. Image.

Just because you respect "corpsepaint" more than "wiggas", in the end they both woke up and put a lot of time into cultivating an image.
