Helldrakes are good, but build up a solid basis of Troops before you start spamming flyers.

You can win battles without Troops (thankfully to Secondary Objectives). But winning a battle without a Baledrake is much harder.

Haha, I was just going to ask about how to deal with terminators. I could deal with the ravenwings pretty well but man those termies with 2+ save are so strong.

Plasma, enough said. 2+ is nothing when you're rapid firing str:7 ap:2 at them. Power weapons aren't the best way to kill terminators, in fact they're one of the worst.

Other than that, massed shooting should take them down. Noise marines are decent at that IIRC.

Obliterators are also pretty good at taking out terminators with their twin-linked plasma guns and plasma cannons. Vindicators are also pretty good with the demolisher cannon. The only thing is if you get one Vindicator, you kind of need two because they are really high priority targets and with two you will likely get shots off.

Oh god. I just had a playtest with my DA friend where we proxied in units. I decided to try out a slaanesh termie sorc with a group of 5 terminators, 3 obliterators and a chaos lord with 2 groups of 5 noise marines, one with blastmaster, another with doom siren.

He ran a full terminator army with Belial and 1st turn Deathwing Assaulted into my terminator group, essentially locking down my sorcerer instantly with a challenge and tore through my terminators with his stormshields (2+ armor saves and 3+ invulnerable saves whaaat). Next turn he dropped in more to overwhelm them while the non termie lord and noise marines got charged from even more drops. My obliterators thus ran out of shooting targets so I just kind of ran them into CC as well (probably a horrible idea but it was a learning experience).
After that loss we just threw dice for 1v1 challenge battles to test out our HQs' potential. Typhus really is a crazy beast o_O.

All in all, I didn't really get to see the sorcerer in action, the lord seemed overwhelmed by other armies' named HQs and Typhus is rapesauce. I'm not too sure if things would've been much different had he not Deathwing Assaulted everything and I had a chance to use the sorcerer. I guess it seemed like I was trying to test out too many different units at once leading to a force with smaller unit sizes and not as much coherency as his army and pretty much got wrecked as a result. What would you guys suggest I try out next time for the next proxy playtest?

I'm growing on Typhus just because he has that Daemon Weapon of doom with up to 9 attacks at AP 2 and he'll give me some use for my cultists. Another thing I found kind of irking was that Slaanesh Sorcerers don't open up Noise Marines as troops! I had to run a Slaanesh Chaos Lord just to open up that troop choice so that kind of messed up my plan of going Termie Sorc with terminators to push forward in front of my noise marines (I could have had a few more NMs) with obliterators to support.

If you think Typhus is beastly, look at Abbadon. Abbadon is a one man wrecking crew.

I haven't read the CSM codex super close, but aren't regular old chaos marines still pretty good? Can't they be customized quite a bit?

Standard Chaos Marines can be geared up to accomodate any role you want them to serve. They may not be as cheap as Grey Hunters if they're geared up to function just like them, but you should also consider that they become flat out better. Why? Because Grey Hunters are forced to make a choice: Either take 2 special weapons and not have LD9, or have LD9 but have only one "real" special weapon with a matching combi weapon on the Wolf Guard.

Hmm good points. Well regardless of what I decide on I'll probably be buying a few 10man CSM boxes next and decide whether to convert them or not...

On another note, Daemon Prince: Citadel Finecast or Multi-Part Plastic box?

I dunno about anyone else but, my lists start out Heldrake x2 and Obliterators x3. After that I'll shoehorn in whatever HQ and troops I can scrap together.

I think being able to put init 5 on your regular guys is awesome. I know this because I used to be able to strike at init 5 with BA.

After playtesting a bit more I'm really liking the plague marines.

So far I think I'm sold on groups of Plague Marines, Obliterators, and Heldrakes later on (most likely won't grab them until I can reach 1500 or 2000 pts)

Which do you guys think would be a more competitive HQ and escort to go along with these units?
Typhus with blobs of zombies
-or-
Nurgle Biker Lord with Nurgle Biker escorts

I also really like the Terminator Sorcerer with Terminators but I think I'll leave that for a fluffy list in a separate army as I don't think I could run one in 1000 point games unless I run Thousand Sons (haven't tried those guys yet maybe I'll do that tonight...) but those look costly as well...

Actually your friend mis interpreted the rules. Death wing assault does not let him assault after deep striking, it only allows him to deep strike up to half his army on turn one iirc. Right now the only unit capable of assaulting from deep strike are vanguard veterans, so you should always have a phase to shoot / move around his termies.

Of course he devestaded you when he charged you first turn with thss termies... that would be horribly broken!

Ah yeah that did seem a little overpowered and I was thinking to myself... "What army COULDN'T he destroy with that tactic?" It pretty much seemed like an insta-gimp on any unit. But still, turn one followed by turn two precision striking seems pretty devastating.
