Since most of the Tyranids HQ choices do not have the "Independent Character" special rule, can they be challenged, specially if they are taken as the warlord? For example, if a DA command squad assaults a Tervigon, can one of the characters from that issue a challenge to the Tervigon?

Good question, I would err on the side that yes they are considered characters. The basis for my thinking is that SM sgts are considered characters for purposes of challenges and "look out sir!" rolls. Sgts are not IC either and considered just part of a unit.

I believe most of the synapse creatures are Characters, just not independent Characters. the only exception I can think of are Zoanthropes. The back of the BRB, the BRB FAQ should list what units are characters.

Also all unique named units are Characters.

Edit: Also looks like Warriors and Shrikes are not Characters, just the Warrior Prime.

Reference section of the BRB states tervigons and tyrants are characters (not independant) so they can issue challenges and must accept if challenged (in the absence of tyrant guards).

Trygon Primes are also Characters, and I'm sure the Tyranid Prime is a character too.

Hive Tyrants, Tervigons, Primes (both Tyranid and Trygon), and named models are the only characters.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The Tyranid Prime is not only a character, but is also the only IC in the Tyranid Codex. Tyrants, Tervigons, Trygon Primes, Broodlords are all regular characters.

Forgot about the Broodlord being a Character. The Parasite of Mortrex is also an IC.

Any monstrous creature according to the monstrous creatures rules are characters for the purpose of declaring and accepting challenges. Your carnifex is a character.

A monstrous creature however may not join a squad normally though.

Where are you getting MCs are Characters?

Yeah... That's not correct at all.

To bad in a away though, it would be so much fun to have 36 twinlinked Precise shots in a single brood.

All of the Tyranids HQs except guard are characters, either through being IC or having (Ch) in their profile via BRB or Errata/FAQ.

BRB FAQ - "Q: Do models classified as unique count as characters? (p63)
A: Yes, but not in the case of vehicles (with the exception of
Bjorn the Fell-handed)."

This makes Doom, Deathleaper and OOE also characters.
