I know Mars is the bastion/research world of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and the Moon is the major naval base, but what about Mercury, Venus, and,of course we're always interested in Uranus
Has anything ever been written, in any edition, about our neighboring worlds? Please note that I am not very familiar with much past 2nd ed.

Jupiter's moons are home the largest shipyards in the Sol system and boasts the Jovian fleet. It was liberated from Xenos rule during the Great Crusade. From here the majority of the Emperor's early fleets were launched.
Neptune was terraformed and inhabited by humans during their early exploration of the galaxy. By the great crusade however its inhabitants had mutated into hideous beasts and the armies of the Emperor were forced to cull the populace.
Saturn is a major spaceport and has its own fleet. It was allied with the Imperium of Man during the Great Crusade before becoming part of it near its end. Later on it would rebel and form its own empire before being put down, however it was powerful enough to survive for a period of time (think this was during the time of Vandire).
I would imagine that the others also have orbital docks or had mining operations on them (though by the age of the Imperium its noted that all of the natural resources of the sol system are gone, what raw materials that are used in the forges are merely the refuse of civilizations past).
By the 41st Millenium these worlds would be inhabited and have the largest populations in the entire galaxy probably. Other than Jupiter, Mars and Saturn though I doubt that there would be much in the way of exports though (only Mars handles exports outside of the Sol System, with the Jovian and Saturian fleets being part of the Sol system's defense fleet after the Great Crusade). The planets of the Sol System contributed the greatest number of soldiers to the Great Crusade in its early years though, but mostly have been garrisoned in the system since then (due to how hallowed it is and the need for it to have the largest defense force of any system).

Thanks for the input guys
Thanks especially for this, Grey Templar, but I notice the lexicanum article says nothing about Uranus. I'm extremely interested in Uranus!
I know, I know. That joke was old before it started... Automatically Appended Next Post: It's kind of a shame that they didn't do more with Sol System, I think. A few of the planets are never even mentioned.

I knew the Necrons had some kind of influence on the Martian AdMech (machine god and all), but I didn't know it was that serious.
Kinda weird fluff if you think about it. How would the Emperor become this all-powerful god-thing with something that major hanging out a few million miles away?

Come to think of it, that is weird too. Neptune is a small gas giant. How could they possibly terraform it?

It doesn't really make sense to me that Jupiter is home to a huge fleet. Jupiter is probably the worst place in the entire Sol System to launch a fleet from due to the massive gravitational pull, the force needed would be insane.
And as for the C'Tan on Mars, it's the Dragon. The only confirmed alias of the Emperor when he was hiding out on Earth is St. George. As in George and the Dragon, I love that bit of fluff, it makes me so proud to be an Englishman.

When something refers to Jupiter or the Saturnian fleet, all the population lives in orbital stations. and thats where the fleet is based.

Heh, nice to know someone knows basic physics here enough to point out you can't terraform a gas.

The point however still stands, by the very nature of orbiting a planet you are under its gravitational effect. Most likely the reason they were put there in the first place was due to some chemical found inbthe planets atmospheres that is useful in building/fielding ships.

Yes, let's bring logic into a game rife with scientific inaccuracies... I doubt any of GW's writers have any science degrees or say an advisor on such matters. They tend to just brush it under the rug with statements like, "the 41st millenium is an illogical place. Years of buerocracy and superstition have worn away such concepts" or "chaos did it". ...If you want sense go get Dan Abnett to rewrite the whole setting (with 100% more lens flare).

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

well it would be impossible to live on Venus or mercury what with the acid rain, un habitable temperatures, and gravity that would crush any one flat as a pancake

Mercury has no atmosphere due to its proximity to the sun. Venus, on the other hand, is hellish. However, the sulfuric acid rain is high in the atmosphere. The gravity on the surface is roughly equal to that on Earth; it is the dense carbon dioxide atmosphere that is responsible for the crushing surface pressure and overwhelming heat. Those problems could be solved by extensive terraforming though.

It would take a helluva lot of terraforming to make a liveable atmosphere out of temperatures that can melt lead.
But that still makes more sense than "terraforming" Neptune. Even disregarding that it's a small gas giant, what did they do to terraform a planet that far out - make the sun hotter? 1 AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, for non-nerds. And Neptune orbits an average of 30 AU from the sun!!!

Granted, but there should be a little bit of verisimilitude. Neptune is enormous, mostly hydrogen cloud, with hydrogen ice beneath, down to a core that is roughly 5,000 Fahrenheit, with a gravity many times that of Earth.
Terraforming Mrs is probably doable. Terraforming Venus is at least conceivable. Terraforming Neptune would be almost as difficult as Terraforming the Sun.
Yes, you probably could make floating cities if you had artificial gravity (which the Imperium does) but terraforming it? I knew better than that before I hit high school.
