If the victorious assaulter is capable of preforming sweeping advance, must it? The grammar of the language seems to indicate that it is compulsory, but it seems absurd.

Yes. It was mandatory and automatic in 5th as well.

i have a follow up question about this. brb page 429 writes on this subject as "If all the loosing units in a combat fail their Morale checks, the
victors can attempt to make a Sweeping Advance (see page26).".

In my gaming group this was read as the winner chooses to do so. Did we had it wrong?

Yes. This is because summary section isn't 'actual' rules and thus doesn't have the same exact language as the 'real' rules use. Page 26 states that When a unit falls back from combat, the victors make a Sweeping Advance,... So no, it is not a choice you may make.

What's so absurd about grimdark bloodthirsty warriors wanting to kill every single opponent? We players know it could be better if they ran so we can charge them again or whatever we'd like to do, the models don't.

It's a matter of tactical absurdity. Take this example: if the Space Marines break, I don't catch them, but they run off, and I can shoot them some more; if they are catch in the sweeping advance, I'm forced to fight them some more, because now they are fearless.

The absurdity there is more in ATSKNF than in the sweeping advance rules.

Ah, you're right, I remember.

In 3rd Sweeping was optional. In 4th and onward (since 2004), it's been mandatory. But the change from 4th to 5th was that in 4th you weren't allowed to Sweep if you didn't have anyone in base contact with any of the surviving enemy models when they failed Morale.

Good ol' Space Marines ignoring all the rules in the book. Kinda wish theyd give them something else to be viable rather than ignoring half of the important rules.

Just fight them with something that cant sweeping advance like slow n purposeful or walkers lol (wait walkers cant do it right? i just second guessed myself)

Walkers can unless they are stunned or Immobilized.
