Why did the Silent King destroy the codes that allowed him to control the Necron?

He felt that he had betrayed and lost his entire race. He didn't beleive he was worthy of that power any longer.

Or he was drunk.

As above - sometimes people destroy things because they feel they don't deserve having them. Also because they think no one else is worthy of the things either.

So does the Silent King have some level of empathy regarding his species? (Clearly not for other species)

The code is 1 2 3 4 5.
In a universe of paranoia ,deranged, diabolical and completely ridiculous plots counter plots and secret languages, no one has thought to try a code so simple.

Also I guarantee each Necron Lord has a cryptek devoted full time to trying to rediscover those codes.

Alone in the warp.

He probably destroyed them so they could not fall into the hands of enemies.

But he never went to sleep and would have continued to guard them with his most elite troops. So that doesn't make a ton of sense.

Maybe, but in the 40k universe there is no shortage of foes with the power to take those codes if they wished.

The 5th Edition Necron fluff is terrible, that's why.

Uggghhh, ok apparently the Silent King felt remorse for destroying his people and after getting revenge on the C'tan he destroyed the Command Codes as a way of trying to repent for his actions and give the Necrons a tiny amount of their Free will back.

Of course the Necrontyr are dead and only a faint imprint of their personalty is left, so free will is impossible. The Necrons will never be free, the Silent King only doomed them to infighting and to repeat the War of Succession.

Basically read the 3th Edition fluff and enjoy 40k's most Grim Dark faction.

I figured it would be his birthday....

on topic:
He felt remorse for having led his people to their destruction and figured they shouldn't be his servants so he "freed" them the only way he could by destroying the command codes.

Of course, this token action did not in fact free them. Rather it simply ensured that the Necrontyr would never be a unified faction as each Overlord would vie for either supremacy over the other factions or simply want to be left alone.

Simple. He felt like he betrayed his kingdom, his race. Finally he didnt want to be the ruler of a slave race. He wanted the robo-zombies to retain at least some freedom, so he destroyed the one thing which could force full slavery on them.
