Wondering Why the Emperor Left
|
We've seen so many threads concerning cheese armies, and how the player behind them is to quote some "a big girl" if the match is over in five minutes. But, let's look at the upside, and negate that topic with one anew.
When, where, and why did you have your best match? How long was it? Was it an equal, tactical fight that lasted hours due to digging in? Columns, flanking, surprise drop-pod attacks?
I'll rephrase. What was your best match, why was it, was it challenging, how sporting was your opponent, and how were the tactics?
I would start but, I have no stories as of yet to share, except for a small conflict with the green tide and my Marines digging in for some period of time before being overtaken while defending an object in the 5th edition of 40k, however the game was most redeeming due to my opponent being a good sport.
Anyways, share away.

I fought a tau ethereal with a carnifex for four turns. He couldn't hurt me and I kept missing. Longest individual fight I've had in a game.

Had a game against Necrons earlier this month. at the end of the game, he had 1 Cryptek, Imohtek, and a unit of deathmarks left. i had 3 nonscoring nob bikers, (out of a unit of 7) a lone Nob (formerly of a trukk boyz mob) a KFF mek, and 1 trukk. the game ended on turn 6, with my nob holding the relic and in the truck. My bikers were locked in combat with Imohtek. for most of the game, we had units locked in combat, getting 2-3 actual Kills (after reanimation) each player turn. his deathmarks failed to arrive twice, not because of bad reserve rolls, but because of scatter. turn 2, the try to drop in behind a squad of bikers, and scatter on top of them. turn 3, they try to drop in by my other squad of bikes (this one with my warlord) and scatter off the table. turn 4 he drops them in my deployment zone and marks my Ard boyz.

In a 3 way game in 3rd edition, I watched a Carnifex and a Librarian duke it out for 4 turns. Both kept missing or not wounding, and the Librarian also kept failing those instant death psychic checks. The game ended with neither even losing a wound.
In a recent game against my friends Dark Eldar Wych coven, my Flyrant was caught for 3 turns in combat with Lelith and a Succubus with an Electro Corrosive Whip. He occasionally chipped a wound off the Flyrant, while my Flyrant amazing failed to hit or wound most of the time, and the attacks that did get through which would have caused Instant Death on either of them were safely dodged.
My Flyrant lost that one.

I would say my most memorable moment was during an Apoc game between myself and five other friends, at one point i was fighting on three separate fronts of the battle.
On the first front I had a squad of terminators (acting as an honor guard) with my chapter master who took out Abadon, some Havoks, a few Rhinos, and a squad of regular chaos marines before they got squashed by three defilers.
On the second front it was my four Dreadnaughts (1 venerable, 1 regular and 2 Ironclads) holding off a bunch of necrons, my two Ironclads managed to break threw an opening and take out a monolith, they then proceeded to cause the necron players army to phase out after dessimating a few squads the next turn.
And on the third (final) front the rest of my army was holding off a swarm of IG and a gak ton of tanks (4 Lemon Russ' of various flavours, a Baneblade, and a couple Chimeras) needless to say my main force was destroyed! But not before i took out most of the tanks and a few blobs of Guard.
After all that I had completely forgotten about the Orc player who in total had a Warboss, a squad of lootas and 1 squad of boys for his entire collection whipped out my Dreadnaughts taking me out of the battle!

Played a game as BA vs GK against my buddy back in 5th. He was playing Coteaz + warbands with almost all psykers so he could keep dropping Str 10 AP 1 Large blasts everywhere.
I had a decked out Epistolary in TDA hoping he'd grant some psychic defense. He got sniped before he even moved by an Inquisitor with a Psyocculum (BS 10 vs psykers). Had a 5-man Death Company he countered by rolling a tank up to them and forcing them to charge it due to Black Rage, and they couldn't hurt it so they would become worthless the whole game. My buddy and I had a good laugh when we realized they couldn't hurt it, so he told me to add melta bombs to my sgt as a sign of good sportsmanship. Unfortunately, the dice gods were less kind, and it still took a few turns to kill it, so when it finally went down they didn't have enough time to reach anything else to fight. I had a 5-man Assault Terminator squad deep-strike his flank to try to take out his Inquisitor and his retinue that had no support. I tried to place them behind a hill so he couldn't shoot me as I made my approach, but they scattered the full 12" the opposite way in full LOS of the enemy and in difficult terrain. Lost 1 of them immediately from a dangerous terrain test, lost the rest trying to footslog their way back into position.
Fortunately, Gabriel Seth is a freaking monster, and paired with Corbulo and a handful of marines they almost tabled my opponent by themselves. The game ended in a draw, as Gabriel Seth, alone with 1 W remaining, tried to catch up to his last remaining Inquisitor who was running away on the other side of difficult terrain, and the dice wasn't letting Seth run very fast =/
Was still a pretty awesome game that started off terribly but really went down to the wire. We had both never played a game with such a ridiculous casualty rate on both sides.

My first and so far only match vs 'nids. My long fangs are wreaking havoc with their ML's and PC's when Doom comes from below (I think that's doom? the one that appears below you with a large blast) Killing all of the long fangs bar 2: the sgt and a PC fang. He gets into melee immediately and I'm thinking, well, I'm boned. I swing first doing 1 wound. He swings next, killing the sgt and missing the rest. That combat lasted for 4 turns with the long fang killing the monster, then firing at a group of gribblys with it and gibbing enough of them to make them flee. Game ended there. I lost, but damn that long fang did well

I remember when 6th first came around before CSM got their new dex, there was this one battle where Draigo and Abaddon ended up in a challenge that started at the end of turn three and kept going till the game ended on turn 6, each only caused a single wound to each other, and after the game ended we rolled for two more round of the challenge to try to determine a winner... They battle there still.
The best I have ever had one of my units do though has got to my my main Psyker
When I first started playing with Psykers and I was unsure of how to paint them due to the lack ofvariation of models I ended up playing a game that went till turn 7, all my troops were dead except for 1 Psyker who not only survived when his squad was shot to death on turn 6 and passed his leadership test to hold the objective for the win, but also got off two more str 3 Warp Blasts to kill a couple space marines who were trying get in range to finish him off.
I painted the rest of the squad to essentially be his shadows and whenever I field his squad it is not a squad of psykers, it is him and all his shadow clones he has conjured. I remove them first instead of him now and swap models as needed to keep him in play so long as the squad exists.

I have had a unit of Grey Knigths Purifyers kill some fifty Teramgaunts, four warriors and a Hive guard before they lost the first three men of the squad. My best fight was Lucius going up against Corbulo. Corbulo tanking billions of wounds with his 2+ FNP, Lucius hacking away at him and Corbulo absolutely refusing to go down. In the end I think the armour of shrieking souls won.
And as for games taking ages, we played 2nd ed . Those were games you'd start on a saturday, play all day, go to work at 9pm, work till 2.30am, then back to it and carry on. Sometimes we still didn't finish. Trying to explain why we were being noisy, to his mum at 6am on a sunday morning...
Games would sometimes take above a week to finish. (luckily, my friend had a table we could leave set up)
Although sometimes, we'd leave it set up. And come back to the game and there'd be his cat, sat on the table flicking mini's about...
My personal favourite game was a 1000pts chaos vs blood angels. In the end, it came down to the first dice roll (I managed slay the warlord and first blood with my first shot- with an insane amount of luck) I can't really claim it as a win as it was blind luck.
The rest of the game was just a big ruck and was great fun, finishing with the duel above.

Longest game would have to be a 12 hour 6-man battle I had a couple of years go. 1500pts per man. Needless to say it kinda dragged on but the most memorable bit was my brother deciding that the best idea, with a twin- LC Belail as his last unit on the field, was to assault a DCCW-less dreadnought... we gave up trying to get the dread to wound Belail because it was a stalemate for ages so we said he died from exhaustion I think I also recall the Eldar player's fancy Fire Prism (the newer model) blowing up a lot of stuff before getting OB'd off the map.

My most memorable game of 40k ever was at the 2003 Toronto GT.
I'd built a Salamanders army, (when they were still just the Codex: Armageddon rules), because everyone said they sucked due to "being dwarfs in power armour."
Now, I'm well known for having th emost horrid luck ever. I almost never win, and if I pass even 50% of my power armour saves, it's cause for massive celebration! I'd never once had a winning record at a GT, typically I'd be lucky to win 1 game out the 6/7 games played that weekend!
With my shiny new "handicaped marines", I tabled my first opponent who was playing an IG list w/ GK allies, and then played to a hard fought draw against a Tau list.
Thanks to the GW event organisers, they made sure to put me up against some "more serious competition" for the final game of the day...
I went to my asigned table, and waited... and waited... Next thing I know, riegning 40k UK staff champ Phil Kelly is across the table from me with his Ulthwe list.
The game was a blast. The first couple of turns were spent carefully manouvering our units about, waiting for reserves to show up and trying to grab the 'easy' potential objective markers that were well away from enemy units.
By turn 3 all hell broke loose as there were only 3 markers left to uncover and each of them was heavily contested. Some of the highlights from that battle;
- Phil's Wraithlord makes a daring charge towards the center of my line of Tactical squads. My Force Commander w/Thunder hammer + Salamander mantle charges out and crushes it in a single round of combat! He then makes a rather heroic sweeping advance towards the nearby 'mystery marker'... And proceeds to blow himself into tiny little bits as I then roll a spectactular string of 1's! (1 to unearth the 'booby-trap' result, followed by a 1 for the scatter to ensure it would hit my commander, and then another 1 on my armour save to lose my final wound...)
- Phil zoomed a Wave Serpent full of Banshees right up my flank, after murdering all but the Vet Serg + Multi-melta marine from the nearby Tact squad. (he actually coulding see it was a multi-melta due to where he was standing, and the rock my marine was 'tactically positioning himself' behind )
My turn, the first shot with the multi-melta misses, and Phil breaths a sigh of relief. I then announce that I would use my Vet Serg's signum to re-roll. End result is one very slaged Wave Serpent, 8 now very confused Banshees, and a trigger-happy Predator tank gunner readying his Autocannon + Heavy bolter sponsons!
A Banshee lived long enough to run craying back to her Craftworld!
- Phil made a rush for the central 'mysterious marker' we'd been fighting over with his Seer Council, but fell an inch short of getting close enough to examine it. I then rushed a Rhino w/10 Tactical marines inlcuding 2 Flamers + PF Serg right down his throat. They managed to kill a couple Augment Warlocks with their shooting.
Phil was forced to deal with them instead of going for the marker, (otherwise his Council would then spend the rest of the game tarpited in combat), and thus had to forgo searching the nearby marker & spent his turn killing my entire Tact squad. (a noble and heroic sacrifice to be sure - the Chapter will remember with pride!)
This gave me time to get onto the final 'mysterious marker' with my Predator and make the final turn + extra turn into a giant game of chicken! (If either of us rolled for the marker we controled and failed to roll a 6 for the 'real objective', the other person would automatically claim it since the last marker left is *always* the objective)
- Phil played his gamble and went for it after I used my 'Extra Turn' bonus due to being a Salamander, and rolled a 5!
So my Predator tank, (now minus it's turret autocannon), automatically held the objective. Phil sent everything he had left at it; a Singing Spear just in range, 3 D-cannons and 3 Bright lance shots at that damn tank, but only managed to immobilise it and stunn it too many times to count!
An absolute blast of a game! Close all the way through, and each mistake we made was heavily punished in return. Not to mention plenty of jokes about 'soft English' and 'b****** Scotts'!
Best of all, despite playing a full 7 turns, we still managed to make it near the front of the dinner line afterwards, so there was still plenty of pasta & chicken left to be had!

In the end, he won, but all he had left was Draigo on two Wounds.

Two best moments in my reasonably short warhammer career -
Death BA dread dropped on a SW longfang spam. He took about 30 missiles to the face, and only took a hullpoint. He wiped out 3 squads of longfangs, and then finally died to a bolt pistol to the rear armor.
Had necrons wipe out 5 nurgle bikers, plus lord. Single champ gets into combat, with 20 warriors and a kitted out lord. 3 turns of combat later, he lived, did a couple of wounds, forced a morale and overran all of them. It was glorious.

The best fight I ever had was a while ago with my tau against tyranids.
Basically everything went according to plan, I kept manouvering around the advancing swarm until the trygon deep struck right next to my commander and his retinue.
A torrent of trygon shots later my, now lonely, commander passed his morale test and jet-packed away reasonably enough. Snake eyes on the assault move meant he'd be stuck in assault range for the trygon though, which was now down to one wound.
The trygon assaulted immediately therafter and got promptly overwatched down by the shas'els cyclic ion blaster Did we have a laugh!

Every single game with my buddy is a knock-out drag-down fight... We go max turns, and it always turns out to be a meat grinder for both sides. Doesn't matter the game, we know each other so well, that our battle plans counter each other perfectly whether we want it to or not. On the other hand, when we team up, we never lose.

Thanks guys!
I managed to do just the opposite at the Toronto Astronomi-con '04 tournament...
I'd built a new all Drop-Infantry IG army - nothing but grunts & sentinels that deep struck everywhere! Of course, this ment that I didn't get to play a single Deep Strike senario in any of my 6 games that weekend... (go figure!)
I didn't get to play against Phil again, (sadly, as he's a real blast to play!), but he was standing just over my shoulder during a nailbitting game I had vs a Sisters army on the 'Survivor' table. (imagine a giant hill with no cover anywhere! whoever had the most scoring units left on the hill by the end of the game would win.)
Basically what happened was I was rolling up the Sisters' flank in combat by simply drowning them in grunts & power fist equiped officers, and my opponent tried to slam his Penitent Engine in to the ongoing melee but fell a little over an inch short.
So in my turn, I hustle my 2nd Platoon Command over to the party since I had a power fist officer & Priest w/Eviscerator who could pull apart the engine. The officer whiffed, but the Priest nailed the thing square... And cause a 6" blast 'o doom that hit everyone in the main combat.
In the end, my opponent passed every one of his armour saves, while I managed to wipe out;
- My Heroic Senior Officer who was on his last wound + his entire command squad inlcuding the Regimental Standard bearer.
- 4 of the remaining 7 grunts from an Infantry squad which brought them below Scoring Unit strength.
- 3 of the remaining 6 grunts from the other Infantry squad which of course, brought them below Scoring.
- The Junior Officer + Medic + 2 dudes from the Platoon Command, which left just the crazy loony-toons Priest who'd caused all this destruction in the first place!
That was also the 3rd time that day my stupid Priest had done that... His kill count of my own models was rather spectacular by the tourny's end though!
After most everyone stopped laughing as my demise, Phil gave me some rather sound advice which I still haven't quite yet learned, "Now Stephie, I'm telling you this not only as your friend, but also as a games designer, that the objective of Warhammer 40k is to kill the other guy's army and not your own."
Sadly, whenever I face vehicles, I still tend to enjoy the big booms and the fireworks that then invariably tear entire squads of my dudes to pieces...

Apocalypse game, Epic fight between my Lone Wolf in terminator armor with TH/SS vs St. Celestine who kept getting back up!
Fight lasted a full 3 turns.
We both purposefully kept other units out of THAT fight just to see how the duel would end.
The downer...it didn't. The game ended before one could kill the other...definately.
