Bathing in elitist French expats fumes

So I've discovered the minis 2 weeks ago, I assembled a good Kirai Crew but was worried that it might be too big of a jump for me, so I built a second, Lady Justice Crew. I had no more batteries in my camera, so it'll be a written batrep. Feel free to correct any mistakes, I'm here to learn.

We rolled for strategies, he rolled Reconnoiter and I rolled Slaughter.
Since I have a majority of outside element, and new Burn In Designs buildings, we decided to play in a Ghost Town. We completely forgot about the Random Heat Wave though...
He hired his Ortega family with Perdita, Papa Loco, Nino, Francisco, Santiago and the enslave Nephilim, as well as one of my Guild Riflemen. He chose Assassinate, which he announced, and another one about having more Totems, which he kept secret.

I hired Lady Justice, The Judge, 2 Death Marshalls, 2 Guild Riflemen and an Exorcist. I chose Assassinate, which I kept secret, and Frame for Murder, on a Rifleman, which I announced.

First things first, we quickly realize that a lot of our spells and abilities would not be affecting the other crew directly. In a sense, it streamlined play. I had a cache of 6 soulstones, he had only 2.

We flipped a corner deployment, so we were rather far away. Our first turn was spent mostly moving, he split his crew in two halves 1)Francisco, the Nephilim and the Rifleman going behind a big building to camp in one corner and 2)Perdita, Nino, Papa and Santiago moving into another one, Perdita keeping closer to the center of the board.

I saw that, and decided to deal with his crew piecemeal, splitting off the Judge and the slooooooooooow Exorcist to hold back team 2, whicle the rest of my Crew moved to confront team 1.

Turn 2, I realize Papa is going to occupy the middle of the board and lob dynamite everywhere, so I move my Exorcist quicker (inflicting a wound) to shoot with my crossbow. No luck. The Judge moves in and casts Bullets and Blades, taking off three wounds from Papa. He retaliates with 2 sticks of dynamite on the Judge, but scores weak hits, taking him down to 2 Wounds. Ouch. More shuffling on the Team 2 front, a few shots are exchanged but nothing major happens except a good scare.

I seized initiative on Turn 3, anxious not to get bombarded too much, so I advance my Exorcist again by suffering a Wound, and shoot Papa twice. He goes down. First blood is mine! Nino didn't take it very kindly, and opened up with his repeater, which fires at an ungodly 16 inches! The Exorcist doesn't survive the first volley, by a longshot. The Judge is luckier, as the bullets veer off course. I had decided to move a Death Marshall in that area, and Santiago and Perdita finish both the Judge and the Death Marshall, expending many control cards and a soulstone to do so. Thanks to their Slow to Die ability, both models are able to take a few wounds off Santiago, which apparently are just enough to turn him into a real beast, but there is literally nothing left for him to reach.

On Team 2's side, a deadly volley from the Rifleman takes one of mine away, and wounds Lady Justice with its Two Birds trigger. I fire back with Justice, my remaining Rifleman and Marshall, but only wound Francisco a bit and his Rifleman as well.

By Turn 4, however, the tides turn in a major way. And I understood what soulstones can really do. I take a shot at Perdita which is swinging around to pinch my remaining models between her two teams. My Rifleman forces her to use her last soulstone to prevent some of the damage he inflicts. As well as burna few control cards. My second shot finishes off his Rifleman. Lady Justice just so happens to be in Charge Range of Perdita, so she casts her Sword Style to had to her Cb stat, charges in and... gets totally surprised by Perdita's quickdraw! I spent a Soulstone, and I was lucky because she was now down to 2 wounds, but brought Perdita down to her last wound (and my friend only had the Black Joker left in his hand). Now here is where we weren't sure, but he let me do it: Since she has Melee Expert, I took another action to Strike at her. Perdita went down, her Totem evaporated.

Turn 5 saw Francisco fail to shoot my Marshall and Rifleman, and the latter quickly dispatched him.

He could only claim a maximum of 2 table quarters, I hid Lady Justice behind a building so he could not Assassinate her, and I had more soulstones' worth left on the table. He had not killed my Rifleman, so I could not claim those VP, but still 3 VP for me, 0 VP for him, and it was a total blast. I love this game.

Im still new to this game as well, but Im pretty sure she was able to make a strike, since shes +1 melee expert. It basically allows you to make a free or extra strike.

But yea, that sounded like an awesome match. I too am falling in love with Malifaux, its crazy how quickly and sometimes violently the game can change.

Amen to that. After I lost three of my minis in short order, I was almost ready to concede.

But I remembered my gaming mentor's mantra: "Think about activation sequence, don't take it out on the one model who just burnt you." And it worked out great.

But it was a close game, and I think this is what I enjoy the most. With 40K, Deathwing throws relatively few dice, so if luck just isn't on your side that night, there is nothing you can do. With this game, you can have a wild ride regardless, and I found that cheating evens things out. Soulstones are crazy though...

You're completely and entirely correct on the melee expert strike after a charge.

So Lady Justice has 2 general Ap, on (0) Ap, and +1 Melee Expert AP. Sword style spends the (0) Action AP, charge costs 2 general Ap (so you can't use Melee Expert as a way to offset costs), and then after the attack from the Charge, you can spend the +1 Melee Expert on a Melee Strike.

I did that in the last game with the wife with Baby Kade. Cast Terrifying, charged, and then did a strike to finish off a performer. It was glorious slaughter!

Alright, good, I'm happy I didn't mess up. Because that was pretty much the turning point of the game.

So, the Riflemen, can they use their 0 action Stand and Fire to interrupt a charge, or must it be declared during its activation and kept as a sort of overwatch?

I dont know the riflemen card. BUT! If its a (0) action, and unless it says otherwise, youd use it on your activation as your (0) action for that activation.

>_<

Sorry, I saw this one and meant to respond. Since it's a (0) action, it must be done during your activation, and if something triggers the attack, then you get to use it, if not then it's "wasted". Though I think just using it would be a good deterrent from getting attacked. "Hrm... if I charge, I get shot... Ya know, I don't think I'm going to charge..."

Thanks guys. I'll have to take a look at Perdita's card (my friend left with it when he picked up his painted miniatures) to see if that's also the case.

Perdita's quick draw specifically says that the effect lats until it is used or the end close phase, whichever comes first. So Perdita's player must use it as a 0 action during her activation.

Ah! So he couldn't have used it as an interrupt if he hadn't set it up first.

I survived, but still, it felt weird that it was essentially a free interrupt, with no drawbacks.

Thanks guys. You're such a great community/extensive database.
