I have a custom warboss on a bike that isnt based right now. At first i didnt really care because his bike is about twice that of the normal bike, but i know theres a lot of nitpicky people out there that would still deny me using it even though it would be technically impossible to get into base contact with it since its bigger on all sides than the base, so you'd go model contact instead.
I really dont feel like taking a normal biker base and just putting enough rocks or whatever to extend it enough so it doesnt look weird sitting on it (the base is JUST big enough to touch the front and back wheels). So i thought of just taking plasticard and making a slightly bigger base and working with that.
I know rule-wise you can customize all you want as long as it doesnt reduce the models normal size, or gives you an advantage by making it shorter or taller (such as prone guardsmen being illegal outside FW), but how do people look upon the base itself being customized?
The only base that this guy would fit on is a flier base, and feth that lol

Look at the FW warboss on bike then look at his base.. then look at yours, yours is now allowed.

In friendly games as long as you aren't using the larger base to gain an advantage it should be fine, but for that you should talk to your gaming group or players and your FLGS.
In tournaments some people will probably complain because they can, you may get lucky though and have nobody complain. For a tournament contact the TO and ask if the model would be ok or not.

Other way to get your model on a smaller base is to pinn it.

I had a similar issue with an Attack Bike, as that doesn't come with a base at all, but for the same reasons you've stated I wanted it to have one. I ended up going with what I think was once a small chariot base - it's twice the size of a bike base, square, but without rounded edges. If I'd had a Dreadnought base I'd have used that. The main point though was to use one that is already a recognised base size for something else, rather than scratch-built.
Of course, as already mentioned, you'll need to clear it with whoever you're playing with first. It'd be wise to have a "normal" backup model just in case for tournaments and the like.

Meh i always pin them to the base anyway if i can because then i can remove the base for storing easier (larger models this comes in handy big time). I just didnt want to use the normal base because it'd look weird lol.
Building a second biker boss, this one more obviously Wazdakka rather than a warboss. Not as wide, but this one is almost twice the length rofl. I just dont wanna waste a base on it since it'd look weird, ridiculously small, and the model is WAY bigger anyway so btb is impossible.
I'll just do what you suggested, have a backup just in case. Probably wouldnt even bother proper basing that one, since i know people are usually more leniant towards cooler-looking stuff lol

Just put it on a normal base and make it pop a wheelie to fit.

rofl....thought of that except it kinda looks odd if i didnt model the bike to look like its doing that (i.e. the rider's reaction)

You could put him on a larger base and then decorate it in such a way that the basing elements contain a footprint the same size as the 'standard' base. That way, you still have a good looking model, plus you have a template for 'accurate' measurement if you happen to run into someone who wants to get nitpicky.
