Both fictional and in Warhammer word, does anyone else think that Dwarfs would be more likely to drink something more akin to STOUT-eg Murphys, Beemish etc?

Dwarves have a lively and varied brewing culture to produce many different styles of beer.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I doubt dwarfs would ever stoop to making a weissbier (let's face it, that beer is so girly it makes Elves look butch), but ales, stouts, porters, wouldn't be beyond them.

Now now now, I've had some really good weizenbocks so there is no reason to dump on all weissbier.

And dwarven children have to drink something.

I thought that too, I've been to Bugmans five or six times now and I always thought it should have been something a bit different/stronger.

While drunk customers make for good sales however, they may not be the best for the atmosphere. Especially when children may be present.

Guys - haven't you heard?

GW rewrote the Dwarf fluff, they now drink white wine spritzers.

Seriously though, I always imagined Dwarfs drinking beer that was really dark, possibly fairly thick.

I always thought Dwarven beer would be pretty strong, and can also clean rust.

Well, this is one of those situations where earth isn't necessarily translating to WHFB. It may be the 1% alcohol is enough to make giants drunk in the fantasy world. Likewise, advanced brewing techniques we've only come up with in the last 100 or so years may not have shown up in a world without computer controlled brewing and super perfect climate control and such. Not to mention all the advanced agricultural stuff we do with brewing.

Sure, they can make good cannons. But that doesn't mean they can bio-engineer yeast and freeze dry hoppes so it's available year round.

Beer was essentially a way to store bread in the winter and it tasted like ass. The side effect that it got you buzzed was deemed A Good Thing™.

Also, I haven't seen much in Fantasy other than beer/wine. And harder liquors are kind of a prerequisite for making harder beers. A strong beer is still a weak whiskey.

That said, it's also a fantasy world. So they can make whatever you want them to make. They use rune magic to cure the hoppes and keep the perfect temperature and keep out contaminants. And it's 100% alcohol, not even absorbing water from the atmosphere because the moisture is scared of the beer.

Since using hopps as a bittering agent is such a recent thing I'd expect Dwarf beer (and beer in fantasy settings generally) to use a wide variety of other stuff like brewing in general before hopps did

So you'd have a much wider range of taste (a lot of it fairly odd to our tastes)

CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT!

I read about some Dwarven brews that were used by miners caught in cave-ins, as a mug had enough nutrients to last a day.

That's how heavy it was.

But I assume they had a great variety of beer to be had.

I doubt any self respecting Dwarf, fictional or at Warhammer World, would be seen dead drinking Murphy's or Beamish.

Abbott, Pedigree, Double Drop or Pale Rider would be more appropriate.

What i was getting at wasnt particularly the brand names but how they are mythologised eg the old "Guinness for strength" ads,- stout is seen by many in the real world as having a much greater nutritional value than other drinks (sadly not true) and many drinkers of lesser brews will say things like "i dont know how you drink that, its like having a meal", also the Irish navies (spelling?)-renowned for physical endurance and a diet of beer and meat have one of the strongest realworld parrellels with the fantasy dwarf - tireless physical workers, the best at construction etc

So called real ales would i think be too thin for the Dwarf - perhaps something like stout meets mead but almost the consistancy of single cream with some sweet spices?

I would suggest you try drinking 8 pints of Abbott and you might revise your opinion of it being thin.

As for brand names, I was using them to illustrate the type of full bodied, crafted beers that a Dwarf master brewer would make. I don't doubt they would drink stout, or indeed lagers - dwarfs holds would be ideal for the ice rooms needed to make quality lager - porters, pale ales, etc.

Though I have to say the idea of mixing mead with stout and 'sweet spices' (whatever they are?) sounds perfectly disgusting - perhaps you should suggest it to WKD, it sounds the sort of think that might catch on with the kids.

youve never heard of spiced ales?
Spicing beer and wine is a very old tradition.
I didnt say mix mead and stout, i was talking about the properties of both eg thick dense head on stout but higher viscosity (thicker) like mead.

8 pints of Abbot ale is nothing.

As a veteran drunk, the fact is, there are hundreds of very different beers, I drink real ale all the time and part of the pleasure is the fact that they are all so very very different, unlike lager.

Which I will happily drink as well by the way!

I would presume simply that the Dwarves too, being an ancient and crafty race, brew and drink many hundreds of different types of beers.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Did I say I hadn't heard of spiced ales?

As for 8 pints of Abbot being nothing, I very much doubt you have ever tried; a fact proven by your comment about the head on stout.

Maybe, Ogre mead certaintly can. Its described as being thick as the honey its made with, often still containing bees and honey comb.

You seemed not to know what spices were in your previos post so it seems reasonable to assume you werent aware of spiced ales.
8 pints of any beer is not a lot to anyone who drinks on a regular basis-i dont drink that often now but 10-12 pints would be a minimum for a evening pub drink (ie not out in clubs till x-oclock in the morning) a "session" would be a lot more.
I dont understand what you saying about stout head-the nitrogen head on a pint of murphys is thicker than on any non stout beer (smaller bubbles for one thing).

Abbott, Pedigree, Double Drop or Pale Rider would be more appropriate.
