I'm just getting into Infinity from 40K and I'm liking the look of the Ariadna army. I was wondering if you can make an effective army just using more elite troops such as Veteran Kazaks/SAS/Scouts/etc. or would you need a solid base of basic line infantry?

Also looking at the army list PDF I can't seem to find where it says the max squad size is. From what I understand the "AVA" is regarding how many squads you can take but is there a limit to how many members there can be in that squad?

Thanks

Hey.

#1. You can make an effective army with any composition you like whether elites, basics or a mix.
#2. AVA is the # of units of that particular type you can have in your force.
#3. When you go over 10 models you need to form multiple combat groups. Each combat group uses their own orders.

I hope this helps, I am still learning myself.

That helps but can you clarify #2. If the "AVA" is 2 does that mean I can have two squads of X amount of models or that I can only have 2 models in my army of that type?

In response to your first question that will really depend on what points you're playing. In a 150 point game having all elite units means you'll be pretty short on orders. But in a 300 point game you will be able to take more elite type units and still have a reasonable number of orders for them.

The maximum number of models in a combat group is 10, but you can have as many combat groups as you like, although you'll still be restricted by unit AVAs and point costs. So you can have more than 10 models but they would need to be split over more than one combat group.

Edit AVA is total number of models of that unit you can have in the army regardless of number of combat groups.

Welcome to Infinity!

As answered: Yes you can have an army of elite troops (and is in fact a valid tactic for multiple factions especially at higher points levels).

AVA is the availability of the type of unit. So if you have an AVA of 2 then you can have 2 of that type regardless of loadout. So Chasseurs in MRRF have an AVA of 4, which means you can have 4 Chasseurs total and it doesnt matter whether they re all the same or if they are all armed differently...

You dont have units as such in Infinity, its not 40k. You have Combat Groups (max of 10 models unless specified otherwise like with G: Servant models), but each model in each Combat group operates independantly (unless in a Fire-team or a Link-Team. Note: these are for Sectorials or for units with the Fireteam: Tohaa or Haris skill only), and the only orders you get for a specific model are those provided by itself and those of the combat group.

It can be a bit confusing, but there are some great tutorial videos and threads around. Ill see if i can Link Psychotic Storm's (he is a MOD over on the Official Forum) List Building thread, which should explain it better...

Others can explain this better than I but there are some links in the Beginner's Sticky that will explain it too.

I'll have a bash myself but as I say I'm not the most knowledgeable.
Basically you can take as many or as few as you like. You have to organise them into groups of no more than ten. Ten is preferable as these soldiers provide and share an order pool. Most games are played at 150-300pts and most lists consist of as close to ten models as possible and they are placed in one group. This allows you to disperse orders however you feel best fits your situation.
Nothing stops you from taking 50 Glawegians though for instance. Or a couple of TAGs.
You should also take into account whether troops are regular or irregular. Irregular troops do not share their orders with anyone else. In that way if you only took irregular orders you would only have one order per miniature and one extra for your lieutenant.
In Infinity we say, "It's not your list, it's you." But that doesn't mean a bad list will hurt you, it just means that there aren't any overpowered lists. Not really anyway. If you think the list seems overpowered in some way then you'll find there is a weakness to be exploited somewhere else.
For these reasons most lists are well balanced with a few different types of soldier and a wide range of expenses. It's also important to remember that a more expensive model won't always be your most important. A cheap hidden lieutenant can help you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. A doctor or an engineer can turn the tide of battle in one turn. And a few cheap hackers working together can take down the biggest, badest piece of armour you've ever seen.

Hope that helps.

Infinity is NOT a game about 'squads'.

AVA means how many units you can have of that entry - it is NOT a squad of them. Generally, it is A single model PER choice.

So if you have an AVA2 unit, you can have 2 models from that unit in your force. You can have fewer than this, but never more than the AVA.

Combat groups have a maximum size of 10 models. Once you exceed 10, you MUST start another group (the same at 20).
Orders are not shared between groups (so if you have 20 models, you do not have "20 orders", you have 2 groups of 10 orders as one group cannot benefit from the orders of the other group).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
