The meat of some beef lasagne products recalled by Findus earlier this week was 100% horsemeat, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said.
On Monday Findus withdrew from retailers its beef lasagne in 320g, 360g and 500g sizes as a precaution.
Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said the findings were "completely unacceptable", but Findus said it did not believe it was a food safety issue.
The FSA said companies would now be required to test their beef products.
"In order to get to the bottom of this, we're going to be requiring every company to test every product line," Catherine Brown, the FSA's chief executive, told the BBC.
"If we find any other cases, we will pursue our investigations vigorously until we find out what's happened and put a stop to it."
Ms Brown said it was "highly likely" that criminal activity was to blame for horsemeat being found in some meals.

The issue isn't that it was horse, but that it was mis-sold
Do you think someone, somewhere is very confused as their last shipment of horses appears to be lactating permanently and going moo?

The other problem is that banned horse-drugs are being tested for.
Vets can use certain drugs on not-for-food horses, which are harmful to humans. There is a chance this product conatins those.

Apparently it has been found to contain Class Hay drugs including Testhorseterone.

Yeah, but if eat something that tastes good, I don't care where it came from. If you tell me before hand that the burger I'm about to bite into (or the lasagne) has horse meat, I might stop and go... "wait a tick." before I accept the food. If I don't know it's horse before I eat, it won't matter* in the end. I mean I love chicken hearts and gizzards (judge me Idc ), but I didn't know what they were before I was handed a bowl of "soup"... though my buddy overcooked the chicken livers and that gak got grainy.
* - While it might not matter in a "pure" horse meat substitution, the other comments about drugs affecting humans does make it matter a little.
Still, I would try horse

I would too! But if it was masquerading as beef . . . I have eaten "Chicken" soup served to me by my mother. It turned out to be frog. I couldn't tell the difference though, so it doesn't matter in the end - it was still a good "Chicken" soup!

More drugged horse meat for me . But seriously, the grossness factor from eating other animals comes from the fact that we don't regularly eat it. I've had Ostrich egg, Alligator, Deer, Bison, SPAM, earthworm (this was a bet), and mealworms (this was not a bet ), and the above mentioned chicken body parts as the "strange foods" category. The only one that I had any consternations about was the two worms... The chicken stuff didn't bother me because it tasted good, and I found out about it afterwards. If you send down something and said, here you go, 1 steak... And then after the meal you told me I just ate Mr. Ed (horse), I would be okay... no big deal.

We don't eat horse in the UK
(although they do in Europe, and I've eaten it there.. very nice)
but food processing companies substituting meat, no thank you,
it's bad enough if it's from healthy legally slaughtered animals, but it can just as easily be from sick or even dead animals (of whatever species). If they're prepared to cut one corner they're likely to cut others.

That old limerick comes to mind:
"they once found to their great relief
a horseshoe in australian beef.
And everybody cried 'yahoo,
thank god it is no cangaroo!' "
don't feel offended, dear upside-downers, nowadays food industry seems to consist of bandits everywhere. In Germany we have big scandals ever other year concerning meat stored too long and having freezer burn or being outright rotten, then washed witch chemicals or just chopped and minced and given into sale anew. It is obviously standard to infuse meat to be sold in supermarkets with water in order to heighten the weight. I remember years ago they found british sausage retailers to compose their products entirely of chicken feathers. It is legal to sell beef or turkey sausage containing bacon but labeled "genuine beef rsp. turkey meat", because fat is no meat. The most of those greens labeled "eco" or "Bio" are mass-produced somewhere in china. Last year or so I read the glorious E.U. allowed bread industry to actually HEIGHTEN the percentage of marble dust in bread rolls so that they are heavier. Until then I didn't even know it is legal to incorporate that into bread. What did we invent the iron millstone for to protect our teeth? Concerning teeth, chemical industry disposes production leftover fluorid in table salt and tells us "it'S healthy".
The issue is not wether or not you are willing to treat horses as every other animal concerning norishment. The issue is that food industry is out of control nowadays. Law has to say something about approvingly accepting bodily harm - in theory...

Um thats why I said I won't push for anyone to go straight veg. Only to cut back on meat. I started going meatless at least 1 day a week about a year ago, and its slowly built up from there to where now I only eat meat 2-3 meals a week. And to be honest I've never really felt better, physically that is. And when I do eat meat (usually bacon or some other pig product) I try to locally source it. Trust me I know meat tastes damn good, because it does. It's primal. But stories like this (and the epidemic levels of obesity) really show that the West eats far to much meat. Its not healthy for anyone or the environment. There's no way to fight the facts really.

Alf just go watch any of the hundred or so documentaries on factory farms and if you've cut out red meat you'll feel better about yourself for at least a few days lol.
It's not an overnight process at all. I feel better like I said, but I still feel like making a bacon bomb, stuffing it into a deep-fried turkey, wrapping that in bacon, and topping it with grilled steaks too. It's a process. Though I have learned how to enjoy tofu finally. The key is learning how to cook it yourself.

I get the not so clever attempt at humor but no, no you don't. There is nothing special about your physiology that demands meat at every meal. If you are indeed someone that eats meat at every meal in large quantities it is greed and indifference to the way mass meat is produced that causes it, not your body.
