My signature takes up far too much space for the single item that is in it, is there a way I can force it to be reasonable?

You would have to edit the image file to fit the max height of 150px.

Okay... Um... it might be a setting that you have... I'll take a screen shot and show you what I mean...

The width is set by the website as the post width, so your signature should be that wide... On my screen, as I see it, your signature is taking up just enough space height wise for the icon.

Interesting. On my own screen my signature takes up a block around 2 inches in height.

Yup, it might be the theme you're using, or a setting with your browser. Lego could answer this better, but your sig looks fine to me.

Some of that is going to depend on the length of your posts. If you make a one-line post, the actual height of the post block will still be the size of your avatar and all the other information on the left, which makes your signature block look bigger.
