I recently got my hands on nearly 6,000 points of Grey Knights for quite cheap, all built, not so much on the painted part. My only problem is that I don't really like the background for the Grey Knights, like... At all. Though the models themselves are some of my favorites.

*Well-thought-out-in-game-backstory* wise I've always been more partial to Chaos, and as I was reading about some more of the Grey Knights story, I realized there may be a way to achieve the Chaos theme, while still using the Grey Knights models/rules.

That opportunity comes in the form of Mr.Crowe. He wields a blade rumored to give extreme power, however it is all but promised that using that power will corrupt the person who opens themselves up to it. Crowe has vowed to use this sword, but never tap it's power, despite being "incorruptible" it's not worth the risk, and even without tapping into the power, his struggle against the sword is not easy. The entry ends saying that he will remain devout and pure "until the day of his death."

So then I propose that Tzeentch planned all along to have the blade land in the hands of the symbol of imperial purity, and in a battle between Chaos and the Grey Knights Crowe was struck down, in his moment of weakness, the blade still in his hand seized this opportunity to push into his mind and at the moment of death, he was resurrected as a servant of Chaos. The power granted by the sword is an army designed by the psyche of the holder of the blade, and fueled by the demonic powers of the four gods. While the army appears to be Grey Knights in armor design, some things have changed, such as banners devoted to the dark gods.

I am also planning to paint them in four different color schemes, I haven't yet decided whether or not to separate it by squad or by equipment type. I am currently leaning towards equipment type, with Tzeentch for special weapons and basic swords (+1 invulnerable save), Slaanesh for Halberds as they give bonus initiative, Khorne for Falchions, with their +1 attack, and Nurgle for Apothecaries and Hammers, for feel no pain, and loss of initiative. For the colors themselves I aim to use the Nurgle and Tzeentch colors from the recent How To Paint Chaos Warriors Forsaken. For Slaanesh I want to use Creme colored polished looking armor with deep purple details to contrast, and lastly for Khorne I will use the magma scheme I used for the armor in the picture below.

Any ideas to expand this would be welcome, as well as criticism, I haven't started yet so now is the time to talk about it!

Works for me. You're doing this the way I prefer: using the right models, but painting/adorning them to go with your fluff. Much better than using the wrong models with a different set of rules.

I'd go with Crowe was slain, and the sword had collected all of the information he had about the Grey Knights. A coven of Chaos sorcerers used the blade to recreate a Chaos reincarnation of the Grey Knights (kinda like the Blood Pact to Stormtroopers). Its still a clever Tzeentchian twist.

You're gonna get some serious neck-beard rage if you try to pointedly violate a major tenet of the GK backstory (they don't turn/fall, even in death), and some people won't be able to see past that to an excellent army behind it.

I like that idea too, where the sword was used specifically to collect information. I figure there's not much more grimdark than corrupting the incorruptible, and the line specifically says until the day of his death. That could be a lot more foreboding than it looks. But I'm gonna take your idea into serious consideration as well as it seems really cool too! Thanks for the ideas!

Of course, you could use one explanation around your mates and another around lore lawyer neckbeards.

I like it. I don't like the idea of mixing color schemes in squads; I think that'd be very hard to pull off. Having different squads different colors can work fine, though.

It's likely that I'll use the different explanations whenever I feel like and when someone asks I'll say that one is true. That way it's not actually concrete as to how they came to be.

As for each in the squad, I agree it might be a little strange, I think it will really add some character to the army, and make it easier to spot from a distance what weapons I have in combat. I'm still not set on the mixed color squads, but I do think it would be interesting anyhow, and actually facilitate some things.

No, no, no, no, no!

Making those fluff fags (new name) cry about your own personal creation is one of the greatest parts of visiting a GW store. The more you tell them that's anti-canon, the more they rage. I have no interest in making fluff for my guard, but I tell those fluff nazis all kinds of rubbish when I'm perusing the shelves. Makes me chuckle.

In short, don't let people put your off your own creativity!

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Hey, if that's how they want to enjoy their game, that's fine. Honestly the current book is kinda lacking in interesting story anyways so I don't feel so bad turning it on itself a little, but the point of this thread was to see what people thought in the first place, that includes people who don't think it fits with the background.

That's the thing I'll miss most about "retiring"; Breaking out my squat tank, female Emperor's children and Pony nobs and watching the veins twitch in those special people's heads,

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.
