If you take Tau you're limited to really just an HQ, an Elite, a bad troop, an a good Heavy support.

HQ with 2 body guards equipped with plasma and missilepod or fusion blasters. 254

Elite- three suits with twinlinked missile pods, flamers, and team leader with BSF. 149

Troop- 12 man firewarrior squad 120

Heavy support- 3 broadsides with 2 drone controllers and 1 BSF. 240

total of about 763. But you could cut down the FW squad to a 6 man squad for just over 700 points. Not bad considering how much versatile firepower you get out.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Fire warriors aren't a bad troop anymore, and with a Dfish they can be the most survivable scoring unit in the game.

You will be forced to take a suit as your hq, but at the same time, a suit with a TL flamer deep-striking can be just the one trick pony you need to take care of some cover hugging or ADL heavy opponents.

Stealth suits aren't terrible either, if you use them to improve the mobility / safety of a Tau Commander, and also not have to rely on shield drones. Gives outflanking and stealth/shrouded.

But why do you care about protecting the commander? It's just a BS 4 crisis suit, and the point increase to get BS 4 is roughly equal to the increase in firepower. So really it's just another generic crisis suit that is no more or less worthy of protection than one in the elites slot. Wasting points on protecting it with expensive "shield drone" stealth suits is much less efficient than just buying more elite crisis suits to replace it when it dies.

Losing your BS 5 Airburst, and not giving up the Slay the Warlord point.

it wont be warlord if you have it in an allies slot.

Who cares about the AFP? It's a decent gun, sure, but not worth spending hundreds of points on stealth suits just to protect it.

I've only been back in the game for a few months, so take what I say with a bit of a grain of salt. From my observations, either one could make a decent ally (though neither is currently very impressive as a main army), so it comes down to what you want/need to compliment what you have.

Assuming that the list in your sig is your current list, it looks like what you have is a lot of mobile mid to short range units, all designed to rush forward and take the fight across the board. What you don't have (although I don't know your wargear, you could have a ton of meltas), is possibly ways to counter tanks, long ranged fire support, any sort of psychic powers/defense.

So, tau could easily give you the fire support and tank busting, mostly in the form of broadside, which would be a must-take if you go with tau, can't beat twin-linked 72" S10 AP1. Then you can take a small fire warrior squad to camp backfield objects, and a crisis suit HQ. They don't do anything for you in the psychic department, though.

On the other hand, Eldar can give you some of the best psychic defense and psychic powers in the game with a farseer and maybe some warlocks (or even Eldrad, if you have the points). You can also take the wraithlord, one of the most solid heavy choices in the game. I haven't seen if for myself, but I hear warpspiders are tearing it up in 6th, so that could be a fast attack choice, though its all-out melee. For elites, you can get major tank popping power from Fire Dragons (if you don't have tons of meltas), or harliquins for more CC. For troops you can take rangers, which are great at camping backfield objectives (if you keep them in cover, they get a 3+ or 2+ cover save) and sniping characters.

All that being said, both are supposed to get codex updates at some point later in the year, so the best choice may be to wait on the new codexes and be sure that you are getting the best units, rather than have them be irrelevant in a few months.

Mostly to reliably get your commander up close to use his fusion blaster and plasma rifle. A simple missile launcher will gank the commander so anything to slow that process down is a good thing.

I didn't claim it was an amazing earth shattering tactic, just another tool in the toolbox.

If you go eldar, you can get the official netlist eldar allies (tm)

Farseer with doom/guide and ROW.
Min squad of jetbikes for objectives or squad of pathfinders/rangers for camping.
3 x War walkers with scatter lasers.

It's the best units in the codex for less than 400pts (IIRC)

Firewarriors aren't really that good when you compare them to standard troops. Terrible statline, lack of special weapons, expensive, low squad size, and transport with no firepoints on a shooty unit. It's not offset in any way by the S5 gun. And don't say that FW got a boost thanks to rapidfire. Rapid fire weapons got a boost. SO that includes bolters and now plasma guns, while also reducing what our suits had special since anyone can fire a plasma shot 30". Also the 30" range on the pulse rifle leaves them in perfect range to be hit by bolters the following turn. FW aren't terrible, but they are far from good at holding an objective or taking objectives.

And Devilfish are terrible. Expensive, no firepoints, no significant weapon options, and it actually discourages moving forward with troops due to the D.Pod. Most people just use them as mobile terrain, which is silly for that point cost since a rhino could do the same job at less than half the cost.

And the T/L flamer suit is insane if you're planning on Deepstriking and hitting a unit. You're just asking for an entire suit unit to deepstrike just out of range to use the flamers and then get mulched on your opponents turn.

The whole point of the suicide suit is to be mulched on your opponents turn; and if you're nervous about landing it where you want it, you can always deep strike into some safer area and position afterwards; at worst, its still sponged out some attention from your opponents turn.

The nice thing about devilfish that you dont get with the rhino is the ability to move over impassable terrain. Tau are forced to take 1x FW squad and 1x commander, the dfish means you can safely assume that a 6 person fire warrior squad will stay alive at least until you decide you want em to start dying.
